listening to chgo, i think i'm going w/Hogie on this one. At this cost the Bears might as well have kept Monty, which was my first thought b/c didn't realize Monty was cheaper. One thing I do like about Poles, all Gm's are going to make mistakes, he quickly realizes his mistake and changes course.
Swift is Monty lite, but at least he's better than what they have, didn't cost Barkley like money, and gets them 1-2 years down the road when they can look to draft another mid rd RB.
How do we know Monty wanted to stay? Maybe he wanted to go to a 'contender'? Just spitballin
maybe, but Bears never tried, they were moving on. It didn't work and they are now course correcting like they did w/Claypool.

W/ Josh Jacobs going to the Packers Poles was forced to upgrade the RB position and he managed to do it w/o overpaying. Swift is still very young and is quite strong for his size. It's a good deal.

I think swift is a lot faster than Monty. If swift gets pass 2nd tier much harder to catch him than Monty I think.

Monty replaced Swift and one season later Swift is brought in to fill Monty's place. Irony

I wont miss Aaron Jones one bit! He must've been showing some wear n tear because he was MUCH better than AJ Dillon. It wouldnt have been fun going against a Josh Jacobs Aaron Jones backfield.

Det let one go for the other, and the Bears weren't trying to bring in Swift last year. I hope you are right though.
So Poles backloaded both Swift and JJ, which is fine for this year, but next year both of their contracts go way up. If you take away draft picks we are still left with 45mil. With FA rolling out, who are we gonna spend it on!? We def need a star DE signing now, and fast!

I dunno. I still don't get this. Monty was good and he was familiar with the offense. I think he left on a 6M contract to the Lions? And we bring in Swift who has to learn the system (not really an issue) for 8M and we lose a 5th. I'm calling this a step back. Maybe even. Not sure why we did this.

I figure the Bears were in a completely different place then vs now. Poles was tearing things down to the studs, trying to undo all the damage done by the previous regime, fixing the cap space issues, gaining draft capitol, building a base of talent. Herbert was a cheaper option that they thought could take on the starting duties and while he certainly isn't Montgomery, he was solid enough to take the reins for now. But, now the tear down is complete and we're a year plus into the rebuild so Poles is working on restocking. And this isn't going to be the same offense that we had when Montgomery left so he also would have had to learn the new offense.
