I am ready to just say screw it and draft Powers-Johnson #9 and take the best WR money can buy in free agency. Get the other lineman with the pick we get for Fields next week.
And one possibility would be to do a bit of a tradedown with that #9 to where you could definitely get him, and also pick up another great pick to go with the Fields pick (still pick up a great WR). Check out this link that has the WR's ranked in this draft. This draft is about as loaded at WR as I have seen in a long time.
And I do like Lloyd Cushenberry from Denver as a great FA center. He is only 26 years old. He is literally just now hitting his prime years. So, that's another possibility. That would be money well spent. And Caleb would have a veteran (a solid player) at center. I'd still draft a C/G though... and a stud. He'd be a great backup this first year and would probably get plenty of playing time, the way our interior OL guys get injured. Then next season he could be a starter IOL guy.
The new CBS mock has the Steelers trading up to #9 for JJ McCarthy and the Bears getting Powers-Johnson with the Steelers #20 pick. That’s way better than TE or #4 WR at #9.

david - I do think it's better than #4 WR, but I think top TE can be an absolute monster of a game breaker

Yesterday I was looking over the free agents who could be available for the Bears this year. You know, I was a bit deflated looking over that list of WR's. While the FA list overall has a lot of solid players this year, it isn't so solid regarding receivers. There are one or two guys on that list who could become available to us at WR. But the rest of that list doesn't look so good to me. I really believe that WR needs to be addressed in this draft - because this particular draft year is loaded at WR. I just think we would miss a fantastic opportunity if we don't get one relatively high in this draft. Certainly no later than the 2nd round. And while I would love to land Bowers at TE, it just seems like we need a stud WR more than a stud TE. I keep coming back to thinking the Bears really need to come out of this draft with a stud WR and a stud interior OL. Between the draft and free agency we need two stud OL (one being a center & one a guard) and a quality backup IOL. Of course the team has other needs that need to be addressed on offense and defense. But the top priorities on offense are WR/OL to support whomever ends up as our quarterback. I would have no problem with the Bears signing Cushenberry and also drafting Powers-Johnson and letting PJ start this first year at RG (Nate Davis is playing at a backup level now). If Cushenberry goes down with an injury you could then slide PJ to center and that IOL would still be pretty darned strong. LOL, my mind is obviously running amok about all of this :-)

I don't know JABF. I think a Gronk or a Kelce is more impactful than a stud TE. Question is whether Bowers can be like that. However, a receiving threat is easier to project than a QB. But still not a sure thing

I was thinking that too, but then (LOL) I listened to some beat guys on YouTube recently talking about this. I can't remember who it was, but the guy made an interesting point. I'll probably butcher the point here, but this is how I heard it. The guy said that as impactful as a great TE can be (he wan't denying that fact), a great WR is involved in more plays than a great TE. Now this is comparing two top-tier level guys, apples to apples talent. He was just saying the WR is going to contribute (a bit) more than that TE. LOL, I don't know if that's true but the dude had me convinced... but I'm a simple minded guy and can get misled pretty easy :-)

Interesting... I would have thought it the other way around since TE are normally bigger and a good one will block too. WRs can block, of course, but normally they are not built to block/
We need a center, a starter quality guard ( who can play both LG and RG) and a solid backup.
And we need a competent backup C for when (not "if" but when) the starting C goes down to injury, as we have seen here in recent years. I am so tired of seeing opposing defenses collapsing the pocket - so that there IS no pocket to work out of. Caleb Williams deserves to have that (at least) here in Chicago. That's why I'm thinking we should double dip at C.
Don't you get tired of watching our quarterbacks here in Chicago running for their lives on gamedays? Man, I am 100% sick of it.
If ever want our QB to pass from the pocket - then he needs a pocket to work out of. The C is the bedrock foundation of the interior OL. If your C sucks, your OL sucks. Period.
Agree. Our IOL is brutal all because of the C sucking ass and everyone else has to try and cover their own positions and also the shortcomings of the center.

I get that everyone is high on JPJ but I think maybe some perspective is in order here. The guy is an iOL. Maybe a C, maybe a G. But he's an interior OL and those positions are generally not ones you spend a 1st round pick on. In addition, he has only 1 year of starting experience in college.
Yeash I'd way rather use the #9 pick on a pass catcher or even a pass rusher than a damn C.

Yeah, I think 9 is way too high on a C. DT or DE. Assuming we get MJH or another top WR with the first pick
