It's a good question they raise here. I think, at the very least they need a solid starting C, and a G/C who can play the IOL from LG/C/RG. Jenkins is made of glass and we need a solid backup there. Nate Davis flat looks bad. I was really disappointed because he should have been "decent" at RG. He isn't. So the Bears will probably start the season with Jenkins/newguy/Davis as the interior OL guys. But common sense tells you that the "newguy" center isn't the only upgrade needed on that IOL.

We need a center, a starter quality guard ( who can play both LG and RG) and a solid backup. I’ve always felt Borom would be that guy, but he never stepped up.

And we need a competent backup C for when (not "if" but when) the starting C goes down to injury, as we have seen here in recent years. I am so tired of seeing opposing defenses collapsing the pocket - so that there IS no pocket to work out of. Caleb Williams deserves to have that (at least) here in Chicago. That's why I'm thinking we should double dip at C.
Don't you get tired of watching our quarterbacks here in Chicago running for their lives on gamedays? Man, I am 100% sick of it.
If ever want our QB to pass from the pocket - then he needs a pocket to work out of. The C is the bedrock foundation of the interior OL. If your C sucks, your OL sucks. Period.

Not being funny or anything, but honestly I'm not sure I would recognize anything else. It's the only QB play I have seen for decades. To see QB sit in a calm pocket and pick apart the other team with passes (especially long ones.... I'd honestly think I was watching a different team.

I know. No QB is going to get a lot of time in the pocket to work. Not consistently anyway. And a QB has to be elusive within the pocket - or rolling out to extend a play. But the best QBs have enough time to work, at least a lot of the time. It's not a non-existent thing like the Bears QBs often have to endure. Fields helped the OL a ton by being a crazy good athlete. If he was not so elusive the OL stats would have been bottom of the league bad. But there is a cost to not having the time to run your passing offense... and we've seen that. But you're right, that doesn't mean a QB in the NFL now can calmly take his time in a perfect pocket. That doesn't exist. What I want to see this year for our new QB, is to not have the defensive players in his face almost instantly. That is SO disruptive to any QB when there is consistent pressure like that all game long.
Double dipping compresses the availability. Your first "dip" will have to be in an early round, maybe even reaching. Other teams feeling the need to have a center will likely follow suit, making your second "dip" really shallow. Personally, I think the Bears would be better off at considering a position change among tackles and guards (*gasp* 'that's unheard of, mats!') and hope for another (better) Whitehair or strike impossible gold in the very late rounds (a'la Kelce).

I am ready to just say screw it and draft Powers-Johnson #9 and take the best WR money can buy in free agency. Get the other lineman with the pick we get for Fields next week.

And one possibility would be to do a bit of a tradedown with that #9 to where you could definitely get him, and also pick up another great pick to go with the Fields pick (still pick up a great WR). Check out this link that has the WR's ranked in this draft. This draft is about as loaded at WR as I have seen in a long time.
And I do like Lloyd Cushenberry from Denver as a great FA center. He is only 26 years old. He is literally just now hitting his prime years. So, that's another possibility. That would be money well spent. And Caleb would have a veteran (a solid player) at center. I'd still draft a C/G though... and a stud. He'd be a great backup this first year and would probably get plenty of playing time, the way our interior OL guys get injured. Then next season he could be a starter IOL guy.

There’s a drop-off after the top—3 WRs, so I’m OK with a vet FA there, and use the Fields pick for a lineman, if you don’t get Cushenberry.
