Here is an update. The assessment did go down, but not as much as they wanted. I did not know, but the article says that the buildings were demolished in December and so they were still assessed. That is why the assessment was so high I guess. That, to me means that next years assessment would be a lot less. As it sits now, it looks like an extra $4M one time hit, which is mouse nuts (meaningless.... well, except to the mouse). That is not bad. Not sure why they waited a year on that basis. They lost more than $4m on a delay. There is more to this than we know. Which makes sense.
Here is thee article on that (LINK). And you are right. The bottom line is that they will actually pay $4 mil more than they originally planned for. That is chump change for a mega multi billion dollar project like this. The article points out the obvious at the end:
"The Bears are also looking into the possibility of a stadium site in Chicago, possibly in the south parking lot of Soldier Field. However, they don't own that property and they own the racetrack. There is a chance they could get some funding for a Chicago stadium from the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority but still wouldn't have the benefit of owning the property."
There is zero chance the Bears abandon the plan of developing land they own into a multi-billion dollar campus that is planned around the state-of-the-art stadium centerpiece -- and go with Soldier Field-II that they won't even own. Not over $4-million dollars for a tax bill. LOL. Even the Bears are not that dumb. This is now a done-deal. Bears will move to Arlington Heights.

Thanks JABF. I thought I included the link. Good detective work chasing it down, lol.
Yeah, I have to agree that at this point, it would be crazy not to move forward, but holding out for a year for a one year higher tax payment makes no sense. They pay an extra year by waiting for a year. They save $4m, but pay $8m for the next year? (of course the next year they don't have the buildings, but something does not add up. Not that I am the brightest guy in the world, but it doesn't make sense.

+1 And I don't claim to know anything about this kind of stuff. But it just seems to me that the Bears were trying to whittle down the taxes and didn't get a seismic change. And they did lose a year here as this fight seemed to stall the project. But now that this is pretty much settled (unless they want to drag the process on for another year of appeals) it's time to begin the project.
This talk about renting something in the South lot of the old Soldier Field property, for a new lakefront stadium just seems to be a repeat of what they already have... tenants of the City again. There would be no multi-billion dollar campus of hotels, restaurants, entertainment, gambling, etc, being built on land they would own. All centered around their new "crown jewel" of their own stadium. They would own a 300+ acre campus around that state-of-the-art sports venue. I just think there is no "decision" to be made now. They would be nuts to not move forward now with the land they own. And yes, they will have to pay taxes. If that is a shock to "The Family" then LOL, I don't know what they were thinking when they bought the land. Ted Philips surely understood how this works when they committed to buying this property.

For me, unless I understand why they put it off for a year to begin with, I can't predict if they would move on or keep waiting. Is the Chicago thing for real? AH seems to make more sense, but that would explain it. Who knows.... Another one of those things that "we will know when it happens"
Bears aren't building a stadium on the lakefront, folks. That's a pipe dream that only Mark Carmen on CHGO still believes in. No way that happens.
This is all the stupid political posturing, negotiating leverage, and NIMBY stuff that plagues lots of major development projects. It's particularly bad in Cook County which is notorious for graft and insider dealing.
You wonder why Vegas can build a beautiful, expensive new stadium and host a SB in just 2 years while Illinois can't? That's why.
The Bears will end up in Arlington Heights (maybe 5% chance of a different suburb) but it will take years of bs wrangling and millions of wasted dollars to finally drag it over the finish line.

Warren actually has me semi convinced he wants to stay on the lakefront. The way he talks about loving the city and him living there and wanting the stadium to stay there.... He talks a good game. But financially, I still think using the land they own makes the most sense.

All political posturing for leverage with the AH crowd.
Bears want to OWN their stadium and land and have a year-round facility complete with hotels and restaurants which can host concerts, SBs, Final 4s, conventions, etc.
There's no room or land for sale or transportation access to accommodate a lakefront site. SF and the surrounding area is beautiful scenically in Sept/Oct but otherwise completely sucks. And I say that as a STH who's gone to games there for many years. The access is terrible and the site is cramped with no creature comforts less than a 1.5 mile walk away.
And can U imagine the cost overruns and delays that would come with a city site? The graft and red tape are way worse in the city than the suburbs and the Cook County suburbs are no picnic there.

If Warren has a big yard, maybe we got ourselves a new location.

If he has a pool, it could still be considered lakefront
