He won't get fired if he gets it right this time. Going with the crowd is not always the right way. My hope is that he is more focused on doing this right for the Chicago Bears, than just trying to go with the crowd. Caleb Williams may very well be the way he goes with this draft. But I hope he uses all of his resources to get this right. If the choice was based upon a popularity contest we wouldn't even need a GM. Just have an oline poll and run the draft ATTM (according to the meatballs).
He might survive being wrong on Williams, if Warren and Flus are onboard. But if he talks them into a QB that’s wrong and Williams becomes a super star, as expected, his ass will be fired (and rightly so). He has to be aware of this. So, in his mind, if it’s anywhere close between Williams and Maye, he’s going with Williams.
Hopefully the Bears are working together on identifying the best QB. This includes all of their best (and considerable) resources here. Scouts, key coaches (including Waldron and Joseph), certainly Poles and Warren. Bring all of your best resources to help with this. It could end with the Bears drafting Caleb, or another guy or keeping Fields (doubt that happens though). The meatballs can just listen to the podcast and sportscast talking heads tho and just go with that :-)
Meatballers just go with the herd... no pun intended :-)

Well, Dane Brugler and a hoard of knowledgeable, non-meatball people are in agreement in their rankings of these QBs. Of course, they could all be wrong. I think Poles will take Willams, unless there is consensus in Halas Hall for some other direction. That’s hard to imagine.

I could see Maye being a better fit and ultimately being the best QB in this draft. This isn't as black-and-white of a decision as some want to make it. Williams and Maye are different QBs. That does NOT mean either is a bad player... both represent the best of the two styles of offense I think. And think of the blowback if Poles takes Williams and Maye turns out to be a great QB for the next decade or so leading a team to Super Bowls, and Williams yet another Heisman bust. If I am Poles I shut out the noise and focus on identifying the best QB for the Bears. Keep your eye on the prize here and don't get off track with distractions. If Poles gets this right (Williams or Maye or something else) then he's here for a career. If he follows the hoard and Brugler off the cliff then he's a goner in Chicago - even if he picks the "popular" guy but fails.

We’ll see. I think he might survive if wrong with Williams, but certainly fired if he is wrong with something else absent total support from Warren Flus, and Waldron.

Yeah, I think he needs to focus on getting it right. If he gets this right then no worries. The vocal so-called "experts" get these things wrong all the time. We have both seen that over the years - and I'm not just talking about sports here.

True, but the “experts” sometimes can provide a measure of cover for a wrong decision. “I was wrong about Williams, but so was nearly everyone else.” He can’t say that about any other wrong decision on this.

I definitely see/understand your point and it is legit. But I would hope we have a guy in Poles who is willing to do what is best, rather than simply make decisions to cover his butt. If Poles has talent as a GM, then don't choose mediocrity and "going with the flow" putting the team second and your mediocrity save your own butt agenda first. Go for the prize, the Super Bowl. That mediocrity thing ends in getting fired anyway. Might was well use the player evaluation team you've assembled to discern best - rather than save your butt mediocrity. And the best may VERY well be Caleb Williams. My only point is that it could be Maye... or something else.

It could be Maye, but Poles would need to have a HIGH degree of confidence that Maye is better than Williams. If it’s close between them, he’s going with Williams. At least that’s what I’d do in that situation to give me my best chance to come out of this with my job intact.
