Williams is the better athlete. But Maye is a very good athlete too. Maye actually rushed for more yards per game than Williams. He is not the old school immobile statue pocket-passer. Williams played 30 college games and ran for 907 yards for a 30.2 yards per game average. Maye played 22 college games and ran for 879 yards for a 39.9 yards per game average. I'm not saying he's better than Williams running. He's not. But he is pretty decent if he has to run. They did have designed run plays for Maye... he's that good anyway.
I have read that Maye is compared to Josh Allen.
+1 Maye definitely has similarities to Josh Allen. Some have him compared to Justin Herbert and I can see some similarities there also. Allen was passed over during his draft by teams that instead took Baker Mayfield (another "can't miss" Heisman winner guy who missed), Sam Darnold (SHM, wow) and Herbert was passed over by 5 teams and two QBs were taken ahead of him (albeit they were good QBs, Tua and Burrow).
You would have to search high and low to find a mock draft where Poles drafts Maye. On the other hand, about 99% have Williams. Virtually all the “experts” also predict Williams. That makes Williams the safer pick in that Poles would be going with the flow rather than against the consensus opinion of nearly the whole football world.
The only interesting question at this point is what he does at #9. He will probably draft an edge rusher, but some people will want a WR to complement Moore.
I would question that because the mocks are often wrong. If there is a deal-breaker issue the Bears uncover with Williams we probably won't know what it is - we just need for Poles and the Bears to do their due-diligence to uncover any of these issues. So often fans, podcasters and the talking-sports-heads, see the college production as a "done deal" that the kid will transition to super-stardom at the NFL level. They often don't. And I would add that some of the greatest QBs in NFL history were passed over by teams who drafted other kids instead. Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes are just a few on a long list of that kind of thing.
So just because "the football world" so to speak goes one way - it may be the WRONG way.
It can always be wrong, but it does exert psychological pressure on Poles. If it’s wrong, he has the consolation that the rest of the football world and Warren/Flus were wrong along with him. If goes for someone else who is wrong and Williams lives up to the hype, Poles is going to get fired for missing back-to-back on Stroud and Williams.
Are you saying that Poles will draft Williams, for sure? No nuances, just is that what you believe?
The only nuance I take somewhat seriously is that Williams blows up in his interview with Poles. Poles says he looks at the tape and the “person” and needs to be blown away by the guy. Fields has a ton of locker room support, so that could be a problem for Williams if he starts out 1-4.
I was wondering if you were arguing that Poles was going to take Williams because he was the "safe pick".
From my admittedly limited experience watching Poles, I'd be surprised if he listens to 99% of any of the "experts" on anything to do with the draft.

Last I checked, Poles is a human. He is subject to peer pressure like all of us. When there is this much consensus around Williams, it takes a lot of self-confidence, arrogance, or whatever word you like, to go against nearly everybody.

I think his self-confidence is as big and anyone's. Whether or not he will succeed will be played out of the next 6 - 18 months.

One thing people are starting to talk about is what kind of QB does Shane Waldron want to run his offense? Even with Metcalf and Lockett at WR, he did a lot of 2 TE plays. At times, that pissed me off, because I wanted JSN in there on third downs. Bears may not even have a reliable slot receiver, especially if Mooney is gone. Pete Carroll liked to run the ball. So does Eberflus. For that, maybe a “game manager” QB (Maye?) makes more sense than Williams who’s going to run around as much as Fields and do his best Mahomes impression.

He won't get fired if he gets it right this time. Going with the crowd is not always the right way. My hope is that he is more focused on doing this right for the Chicago Bears, than just trying to go with the crowd. Caleb Williams may very well be the way he goes with this draft. But I hope he uses all of his resources to get this right. If the choice was based upon a popularity contest we wouldn't even need a GM. Just have an oline poll and run the draft ATTM (according to the meatballs).
If Maye ends up being a mix of Josh Allen and Justin Herbert, I'm 100% on board w/ trading down to no. 2 and selecting him.
Problem is, no one knows what the future holds. Both Williams and Maye could end up being busts or the next Mahomes.
Exactly. I totally agree. Drafting a QB is always always always risky to the max. So often it's just a matter of a hyped guy that has everyone hopping on his hype train - and the guy never lives up to the hype. But sometimes the hyped guy ends up being a legit star. And sometimes a guy drafted AFTER the hyped guy becomes the star.
Poles is gonna have to earn his salary with this one :-)

He might survive being wrong on Williams, if Warren and Flus are onboard. But if he talks them into a QB that’s wrong and Williams becomes a super star, as expected, his ass will be fired (and rightly so). He has to be aware of this. So, in his mind, if it’s anywhere close between Williams and Maye, he’s going with Williams.
