After reading up on what I could find on this today, it sounds like Joseph, Waldron and Canales, - all three of them together - are credited with helping Geno Smith to a Comeback Player of the Year award in 2022. We have 2 of those 3 guys, and the third, Canales, got a head coach job. Now all we need to do is sign old Geno and it will be "Super Bowl here we come" right?
It takes a village. Canales was the QB coach...he wasn't calling the plays, Waldron was. You need good coaches, not just good coordinators.
yeah, That was my point. Canales was the QB coach and Waldron was calling the plays. Joseph didn't show up until Canales had already worked most of his magic. I would have felt better with a Waldron/Canales team. You have any insight on Joseph? I get the impression he is the weak sister between the three

Well, Joseph WAS the father of the son of God, so that makes him... mighty good

Well Canales was an OC this year in Tampa and just got an HC job, albeit with the Panthers(so he might be free come mid-season)...so that wasn't gonna happen.
Joseph was the asst. receivers coach in 21 and the asst. QB coach in 22. He's played QB and was pretty good in the CFL, and he also played safety in the NFL...so he can bring a lot of perspective to a QB having played the position professionally, but also having played in the secondary professionally. I also like that he has a background as a performance coach, he was a Director of Programming at Parisi's Speed School in Louisiana. He doesn't have the name Canales has because he hasn't had the opportunities Canales has had yet. Canales has been coaching in college or the NFL since 2006. He's been around the block to get to where he is now. We'll see what Joseph can do with this opportunity.

I found that part of his resume fascinating. He played on defense, at the NFL level, for 4 years for the Seahawks - and also - he played quarterback in the CFL, at a level that was their MVP for the entire league - and also - was the winning quarterback in the Grey Cup, their equivalent of the Super Bowl. I just find that amazing for an undrafted kid out of a tiny college program. But yeah, he should have a wide range of perspective having played QB at a high level and on defensive secondary at the pro level too. And reading about the guy himself, it sure sounds like he is a very solid person as well as coach. Sounds like a guy who can really connect with the players well.

What are the rules agreed to between the Canadian league and the NFL? Wondering if an NFL team could option a QB to the CFL or if not, why hasn't that been worked out? Would be a great way for 4-7th round drafted QB to gain experience. Soccer leagues do this all the time.

That would make a lot of sense to have an agreement like that. But if I understand it correctly, the way it works now is that the NFL team only retains rights to a player for 1 season if he goes elsewhere. After one season that guy can sign anywhere he wants (go to different NFL team as a FA). You'd think the NFL would take advantage of the newly formed UFL (that combined the XFL & USFL) and hammer out some agreement that would make a situation like you describe. It would make it worth the NFL's effort to back this new league for that sole purpose.

I know this is off topic but I think this is interesting:
Reason the owners don't do it is that it makes them no money. Doesn't add anything to the bottom line today. Its short sighted, because in the long run betters QBs across more teams makes more games watchable which mean more money when they sell streaming rights to Peacock/Prime/Hulu/Netflix/Facebook/Twitter/Youtube........

+1 LOL, though... when are we "on" topic here on the messageboard :-) These conversations wander everywhere. Kind of like shooting the bull at the local pub. I do like it though. I've thought countless times how much I appreciate AlexM getting the idea of having a chill Bears forum and creating this board.

We got who we got. That's not to say I am disappointed in Joseph. It just would have been a real coupe to have gotten the dud that was able to turn around Geno. That's whether or not we keep Fields. A guy like that is worth a lot.

Corporate America has always thought short term. Boost the stock price for this quarter. Worry about next quarter in the next quarter. That's not the way you build anything. Whether it is a company or a team. You build for long term strength and stability.
