I was also at the night game we beat the Rams. Mitch sucked that day too.
He wasn't good at all past about week 10 that year and that D was good enough to win games with only a decent QB.
The O wasn't. Again, what did Longs brother tell him. The team was to soft. Stop fooling yourself into thinking it was the QB, the team wasn't good enough. The OL wasn't good enough the WR's weren't good enough and correct the QB wasn't either. Watson wasn't doing shit w/the garbage he would have had to throw to here.
But again, keep deluding yourself, it's not on me i don't care; but it's that kind of backward thinking got us Fields and nothing but Moore.
We had the best offensive weapons since Marshall, Jeffery, Bennett, and Forte days. Were they as good as them? No but any QB not named Mitch would of did much better. That defense was special that year.
In 2018, the Bears' defense ranked first in points against (283), forced turnovers (36), interceptions (27), yards gained/pass (5.3), total rushing yards (1,280) and touchdowns allowed (5), and turnover percentage (19.5). They ranked third in total yards against (4,795).
PFF has them ranked 2nd best defense of the 2010 decade behind the 2015 Bronco defense. Beating out the 2013 Seahawks defense and 2017 Jag defense that carried a garbage QB to the AFC Championship game which they should of won but of of course a fumble TD was called back because the ref thought the linebacker was down when he wasn't.

It was the pass O and the QB in particular. Definitely needed another receiver after Burton got hurt but the pass O is what killed us.
The more I read about Waldron the more I like about the hire.
LINK What Bears hiring Shane Waldron means for Justin Fields, QB decision The Bears hired Shane Waldron not to work with one specific quarterback, but because he can work with whomever Ryan Poles eventually lands on
Waldron has worked under Bill Belichick, Sean McVay, and Pete Carroll. Those around the league view Waldron as a "smart," "innovative," and "versatile" coach who can adapt his offense to fit the strengths of his personnel.
Waldron wasn't hired with a quarterback in mind, but he'll undoubtedly play an important role in evaluating the options and the monumental decision that follows.
In choosing the Bears over the New Orleans Saints and other potential landing spots, Waldron decided to become the central figure in this regime's attempt to transform the Bears from an NFL Greek tragedy into a perennial contender with an answer at under center.
The Bears didn't hire Waldron because he'd be a good fit with Fields or the best teacher for Williams. They hired him because his reputation says he'll succeed at going down whatever road they choose.
The more I read about Waldron the more I like about the hire.
Ahem, we said the same thing about Flus/Getsy. and Nagy. And Trestman. After 50+ years of watching Da Bears, I've had enough wool pulled over my eyes to clothe the entire Chinese Army. I'm on the wait and see train this time.
But as of right now, I like the hire too! Is it official yet?

He seems to have a real track record in being able to coach up a QB into the scheme and simultaneously adapt the scheme to fit his QB's strong points. You can't do that unless you have a fundamentally sound knowledge of what you are doing. As well as having top notch people skills.
I really hope he has a central role in the decision on what to do with Fields and if we go after the best QB in the draft (and determining who that best QB is).
Sorry, but I uncorked the vintage Bear Kool-Aid as I started reading about this earlier this morning.

Not to rain on the parade, but you saw the post that had him with the same stats as our boy Getsy?

Wonder if he is versed in all of the Bears trick plays like the "throw them off the game 3rd down field goal attempt". I believe the Bears are the NFL pioneers there. No other team has had the coaching chops to attempt that vaunted play.

This seems so fundamental that I just assumed coaches would scheme to their QB1's strengths because he is the most valuable asset on an NFL team. But the Bears have had two consecutive guys try to force the square peg into the round hole. Worse, Getsy couldn't develop solid game plans or play-call during games. The team often did not look ready to play on game day. Anyway, I know nothing about this guy other than what I have read. He may or may not be a dud. But at least he has real experience calling plays. He has worked with different type QB1's so he understands adapting to what you have at QB1. He did a miracle with Geno. I am not drinking the kool aid but I am cautiously optimistic. He also has experience with some good coaches during his career.

The Internet is using stats to spin this from anywhere from a trash coach to a great coach who is a polar opposite from Getsy. All I know is that he has 3 years of play calling experience vs Getsy's zero when he came here. And he took a bad QB in Geno Smith and made him decent. Somewhere I read that he helped Goff too (if memory serves me right and it might now, LOL). I'm in a "wait and see" mode for now.

That D was top-notch
Def doesn't win SB's, stop. The WR's and TE's and OL were not going to win a SB regardless of QB, wishful dreaming. The Mac trade 1000% doomed that team from getting deep into the playoffs. Backwards 1960's thought processes will not correct the course of how to win in the 2020's.
