I am not sure I like the direction that I believe this is taking. My perception is that we are looking for a quality DC but Flus wants to still call the plays. A top DC is not only capable of calling plays but wants to IMO. If we bring in a guy that's happy to have the DC title but isn't going to be calling the plays, how good is he really? Flus has done well on the defensive plays, but he need to focus on being a HC and let go of the D and bring in a top guy and let him run it. I don't understand what we are doing here.

Will Flus let anyone he brings in even call plays? Or is he looking for junior type flunky kind of guy?

Yeah, I totally get that, BIH and it is something I think about too. Maybe it is similar to when an offense head coach brings in an OC. I think that is what we are seeing here. No matter what kind of head coach you have (O or D guy) you still need to get the best coordinators you can. Hopefully the Bears can find a guy who can work seamlessly with the HC and call plays - but with the realization that the HC will want his D run the way he wants it run. You see this with some good HCs... they still will be hands on with the side of the ball they know best. But that doesn't mean they have to micro-manage and call every play on gameday. But I get it, that they will want input during a game situation. It is not ideal. But it probably will be the best we can hope for. It will always be Eberflus' D, just like it is Andy Reid's O, or Pete Carroll's D or for that matter Bill Belichick's D over the years. Is Nagy the "brains" behind the Kansas City Chief's offense? Obviously no. But I thought I heard he was calling plays this year, albeit Andy R. probably had a LOT of input during the games.

First of all I do expect the new DC to call the D plays for Eberflus. But undoubtedly Eberflus will probably have input in specific game situations. I would do the same thing because ultimately the HC's job is on the line as well as the DC's. There is a lot that the DC will do anyway. Running the entire defensive unit of coaches and players has to be extremely demanding. Game prep with scouting, film room hours overseeing all of the D coaches and being "in the room" as much as possible for game prep - preparing the actual final game plan with the HC (all 3 coordinators will be working with the HC on this component), dealing with the constant personnel problems has to be a time drain as well. If I recall, we used to be told that the ideal "direct span of control" for an upper-level manager was 5 people. LOL, that was many many years ago when I attended police supervision school at Northwestern University. My point is that the HC needs a lot from that coordinator every day. You are right, the HC needs to be focusing on HC stuff, executive level coaching stuff. I really don't think Eberflus would be doing gameday play calling if we hire a solid DC. But maybe I am wrong. I am just spit-balling this... I don't know how it will actually pan out.

yeah. I hope not. I read something that said Flus was going to still call plays. But getting excited about something you read.... I know better than that. Need to just wait and see what happens. I have time to get excited about it afterwards, lol

What I think is that we should hire me as a DC. I will NOT call any plays + will be a new leak for Gabriel. W - W

This is a great idea. It solves two problems at the same time. I am also going to call Halas Hall and see if I can get in on this. I can not call plays too. I am going to see what they are willing to pay for me not to call anything. I am pretty sure I can hold that job. I can do it well. I have confidence in myself.
