Last year they had the #1 pick, passed on drafting a QB, and kept Fields over CJ Stroud (in effect). This was after passing on Mahomes the last time they were in this position.
This year they have the #1 pick again, can they afford to NOT draft a QB?
Hate to tell you but I'm putting my money on Poles drafting a QB #1. He's not tied to Fields and Justin simply hasn't done enough to warrant passing on a rookie in this class. 2300 yards/year just won't be successful in the modern NFL.
This is also what I wrestle with. But I still think Fields can truly shine.
He will ultimately be a very good QB, but he will probably have to go to a team who has a clue about coaching, play calling, NFL-caliber WRs (more than 1), and guys who, you know, can actually block someone. The Bears have no clue as to what to do with a good young QB coming out of college. Never have. It is heartbreaking.
This game today was an example of the problems that go on for decades here. When it comes to offense the Bears just have no clue.

Maybe drafting a QB will be successful. But we know that Stroud would not have been as good here as he is in Houston. Just like Mahomes would not have been as good here as he is in Kansas City. The problems on this offense are glaring to everyone except the Bears. And they have been for years now. I won't have a fit if the Bears draft a QB. I'll just be hoping that it all works out. Somehow.
No, you don't know that. You are extrapolating and forecasting that. It isn't knowable.
I'm aware this is a popular argument among Bears fans but I hate it. People use it as an excuse for not taking action. If your culture sucks, fix it. If your coaching sucks, fire them. If you need better weapons, get them.
But you don't avoid drafting a promising QB prospect because: "oh well, he probably won't work out here anyway".

just Please God, don't let him go to Minny. We have enough trouble with GB and the Loins right now
Unless Cousins leaves Minnesota, we have the worst QB and worst coaching staff in the division right now.

They will trade him outside the division. As clueless as the Bears are, even they know they'd better not have Justin Fields facing them twice a year on team that understands how to build an offense.

Fix the team so a young kid has a chance to succeed here. I agree they need to fix this. I don't know that they understand how to though. We see the same cycle of fail here. I really want to see a QB succeed here - Fields or a draftee. I promise you, I won't have some hissy fit if they draft a QB in this draft. But the Bears don't seem to know what to do on offense. The problems are (and have been) obvious on offense for years now. Do they fix anything? No.
That's not being negative or defeatist, but just saying that's reality here. I'll bet you there is a 50/50 chance that Luke Getsy is back calling plays next season. If they DO fire him, then of course I'm wanting to see the team hire a competent offensive coordinator. Boy, I don't know how confident I am that they can (finally) do that. It is admittedly, pretty sad how we roll here. But this is how it is. LOL, I don't "like it" but I can't change it.
