Only 1 game? For the most important Poles decision, career one?
Beating the Packers on their field to knock them out of the playoffs with Fields heroic 4Q drive would be a very big F’ing deal (to borrow a phrase from our president). Given that plus all the support Fields has from fans and teammates, Poles would have to have brass balls to trade him and bring in a rookie QB.
On the flip side, if Fields craps the bed and loses the game in the 4Q, that would probably seal his fate.
I think this is pretty spot on. Fields hasn't been good or bad enough to make this decision easy. A strong performance on the road vs a key divisional rival (esp. in the 4th Q if it comes down to that which it often does) would make it hard to not keep him. Conversely, a crappy outing particularly with one of his all-too-common 4th Q meltdowns would make moving on very tempting.
All us humans are subject to recency bias. If Poles is remotely on the fence right now with either Flus or Fields, Sunday's game could easily push him over one side or the other.

One way to look at it. I have another. If Poles drafts his "QB", that gives him at least 3 new years of breathing room. If he stays with Fields, in worst scenario (not far from current reality) he gets one more year.
Warren would be wise IMO to let Poles know he's safe for the foreseeable future.
First off, he's done a pretty damn good job for a rookie GM taking over an absolute dumpster fire left to him by the previous regime. Not perfect--no GM is--but pretty darn good job of getting the ship turned around. Secondly, he didn't draft Fields so I wouldn't be looking to fire him next year even if he keeps JF and JF flops badly. Poles should be able to set himself up with extra 2025 draft capital to move on if needed. Thirdly, most GMs get a 2nd HC hire and at least one shot at drafting a new QB if the team needs one.
Point is, I want him to make the difficult personnel choices he has to make the next few months based on the coaches and players involved, NOT on concerns for his own job security. Cuz yeah for his own selfish purposes, drafting Caleb is by far the safer choice. He would reset the contract clock and buy himself several more seasons while a rookie QB gets up to speed.
Make the decision on the MERITS, not on saving your own ass.

But if he drafts a bust it doesn't matter if the busted guy (Caleb) was a cheaper option. The new guy needs to at least have a floor at Fields' level, right? At least that's how I am thinking (LOL, I may not be right, but that's my thought). Poles won't look at only this last game but it could be important if it confirms the trend of upward play for Fields. Trends do matter. And of course if Fields has a bad game then that too will be factored in.
Sure, but its not likely Caleb will show as a bust in a year. That is really NOT likely. Less likely than Justin pulling a Wentz imo.

+1
The more I think about this, the more I agree with you. I think it will come down to the outcome of that game. I am seeing lots of activity on social media that George McCaskey really, really wants to see us win that game. If Flus, Fields and the rest of the team can pull it off, it will be basically impossible to do anything else than keep Flus and Fields (and maybe even Getsy, as disgusting as that though is).

Im sorry, im talking about 4th quarter. Most important one. Where games are won and lost. Is there any positive Fields trend there im not aware of? He is like dead last QB there. In the whole league. He never reached mediocre. I have zero faith in him leading a turnaround, God forbid. I do have decent faith in him fumbling though. Im very sorry, but after 3 years of hoping and cheering - this is the result.

It will be interesting to watch how this all goes for the Bears at QB. Watching Caleb this year I thought he was not the guy for us even if we do draft a QB from this class. But it's on the Bears to figure this all out, and I admit I could be wrong about Caleb. If we do draft him I will be 100% cheering for him to do well here.

Absolutely my thinking. Last couple of days as I was playing with these thoughts... if I was Warren I would schedule a meeting with Poles right after Packers and offer him a brand new 3y contract. Give him support and space to pick (or keep) coaching staff and Fields/draft decision. So he has no saving his ass weight.

Exactly
This should be obvious -- Management 101 stuff here -- but the Bears have been inept at these things before so it's hard to trust them.
At the very least, give Poles full assurances that his job is not at stake. Remove all extraneous factors from the decision.
The "real" reason they need to keep Justin Fields is that I just bought my wife her very first Bears jersey a few months ago, a Justin Fields jersey.... and I'm a tightwad with my money and not wanting to have to buy another one :-)

Either that, or Poles signs DaMarcus Fields as Jaylons substitution.
