That’s funny, because one of the questions (basically) was if he couldn’t get blown away by Stroud, why should we think he can figure this out any better this year? The question was phrased more politely, but that was the gist of it. There are quite a few mocks that have him taking Harrison, but if he gets “blown away” by the wrong QB, we are REALLY screwed.
Drafting a QB has always been a total crap shoot. It always will be. Regarding Stroud, it is interesting to note that he has a "defensive" head coach. Not some offense guru HC. He has worked wonders with Houston. It just goes to show that there are no absolutes in football. Every team, coach and player are unique. Fans often fail to understand that. I just hope Poles gets it right with all of these decisions he is about to make. It will be fascinating to watch this all unfold.
And that’s one of the reasons I want to stay with “good enough” Fields and try to build a dynamite team around him like Purdy has in SF.

He buys himself a few years probably by drafting a new QB but he's gonna sink or swim based on THIS offseason.

If he doesn’t think Williams is wired right between the ears, we could end up with Maye — who has potential to become Trubisky 2.0. How ironic would that be? I don’t trust Poles — makes me nervous with some of the stuff he says.

It was perfectly understandable why Poles passed on a QB last April. Fields hadn't been given a proper evaluation the prior two years. We all know why. He was deserving of a good look with a better receiver group and a 2nd year in the same system.
But you're right he did choose to pass. Said he "needed to be blown away" and apparently wasn't. He should have been. His evaluation of Stroud was off the mark if he wasn't. No question that if he had the ability to rewind the clock, he would have drafted Stroud and traded Fields. He won OROY, threw for 4100 yards, 23 TDs, and only 5 INTs, and took his team to the playoffs. And his team was just as bad in 2022 as the Bears were and didn't acquire DJ Moore in the following offseason so don't tell me he had a cast of All-Pros around him.
With the above in very recent memory, he now has the #1 pick AGAIN, practically unprecedented in NFL history, and you can bet your bottom dollar there's at least one QB in this upcoming draft that will end up being a stud.

But that’s not what he said today. He said he’d still rather have the trade than CJStroud. If the Bears had Stroud this year we’d be like the Texans waiting for our playoff games instead of trying to figure out the QB situation. That statement just reinforced why I wanted him fired.

But let's not forget that the Bears are in different Conferences and Divisions. It is not so easy to say that for certainty. I mean besides the fact that if we didn't do the trade and did get CJ then he would be throwing to Velus, Mooney and Scott, oh and E St.Brown. That is not a whole lot for him to throw too.
CJ has some great WR who have the ability to actually catch a ball lol.
On a side note I want nothing to do with C. Williams and his sideshow hustle his Dad has going. Nothing but distractions the Family will not want anything to do with.

Caleb is the consensus #1 pick and #1 QB and that's where they are going unless as I said something really bad is uncovered (and his crazy dad thinking he's getting a piece of ownership isn't it--no NFL team is doing that ever).
And we have to get past this idea that no good QB "could do that here". Houston was a garbage dumpster fire team and franchise for many years leading up to last April's draft. The 2022 Bears actually beat them, that's how bad they were. Only a fluke play, several actually, in week 18 kept them from having the #1 pick instead of us.
They had a nice draft, no question, but their receiving group is almost all rookies (like in GB) and they don't have an established veteran top-10 WR & TE like we do. CJ Stroud is NOT surrounded by a cast of All-Pros. Bears can easily match or exceed that talent by hitting on a rookie WR at #9, adding him to Moore + Kmet + whomever they sign in FA.
Poles MUST get the QB right this draft. His whole career hangs on being right there and believing in Flus (more than I do for sure). Justin Fields, for all that we fans love the guy, is the 4th best passer in the division right now and that's objectively indisputable. If Poles can't turn that around quickly, we are looking at many more years ahead of finishing 3rd or 4th in the NFCN every season.
You aren't going to be making many playoff runs going 1-5 or 2-4 in division and that's what will happen if you have a starting QB who's 4th of 4.

In all fairness the Texans do have Robert Wood who was having a pretty good career in LA before injury 2018-2020 somewhere around there. He did crack 1k yards twice and almost a third time. 31 years old makes him the seasoned Vet in the room.
But ya what has happened in Houston is quite amazing and that seems to happen once every couple of years. I don't think it will work for them next year but what do I know? I am a Bears fan lol.
