Bears vs Browns Notes
I’d also like to remind you all that the Browns have the BEST pass defense in the league…BY A LOT!!! They have:
- The lowest yards total for passing…BY A LOT…like by 150 yards to the next best pass defense.
- Given up the 2nd lowest yards per attempt
- The lowest amount of 1st downs given up via pass…BY A LOT!! The next best pass defense in the league has given up 24 more first downs via pass than they have – 103 to 127!!!!
They are an ELITE pass defense, and I want you all to remember that when you judge Fields as well as this offensive friggen game plan.
***I started tracking specific down and distances, as well as formations at some point, not sure why I didn’t start doing that from the beginning.
1st Drive:
Play 1:
- Play action shot play to DJ.
- As soon as Fields sets his feet there is pressure from 2 defensive lineman in his face.
- Patrick is knocked on his ass, Wright is off balance & gets beat inside.
- Fields hit as he throws & can’t step into pass – maybe 2 seconds of time
Play 2: 2nd & 10:
- Toss to Foreman – Patrick & Jones try to get to 2nd level, Lewis is on Garrett.
- Garrett seals, forces Foreman inside, small lane there but Blasingame & Lewis can’t hold blocks, backside DT gets across Davis’ face & lane closes QUICK!
- Tackled for a loss
Play 3: 3rd & 12
- Slow ass snap
- Looks like TE screen – 3 WR’s clear out & Kmet delays then leaks out.
- Gets about 6 yards, he’s hit right away.
- Jones and Tevin get pushed back into pocket QUICKLY – Garrett is A LOT!!!
- Rojo does a PISS POOR job of trying to chip Garrett & misses!
Play 4: PUNT
2nd Drive:
Play 1: 1st & 10
- Off Set I, Gun
- Toss
- Herbert makes a good cut, but Blasingame did a poor job & he’s tackled from behind. Herbert falls forward for a 2 or 3 yard gain.
- They had 5 in the box to play side – tough front to block up with 4 guys.
- Patrick TOTALLY WHIFFS on combo block w/ Davis on DT in a 2i alignment.
- Garrett sheds Wright quickly causing Blasingame to block him instead of lead to 2nd level & then defeats Blasingame QUICKLY to make the tackle from behind.
- If Garrett is held up even a little longer this goes for 6+ yards.
Play 2: 2nd & 7
- Motion TE to Twins side(wide side of field)
- Blitz from strong side backer
- Line blocks down to strong side, Kmet pulls to weak side leaving DJ MOORE TO DEAL WITH MYLES GARRETT!!!!
- Moore whiffs on Garrett…understandably, Kmet then attempts to block both Garrett & the backside safety, who reads the play & fills awesomely.
- Herbert tackled from behind LOS but falls forwards for a 1 yard gain.
- Moore was never really able to get to Garrett, asked a lot of him.
- ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE PLAY DESIGN!!! ASKING MOORE TO CUT OFF/BLOCK MYLES GARRETT???!!!!
Play 3: 3rd & 6
- Twins w/ Kmet split out right to short side
- Browns have weakside DT lined up in a 4 or 5 over the RT & Garrett out wide outside Kmet w/ Dime Back up on Kmet & outside corner to that side in press too
o 4 defenders on LOS outside the RT
- Scott motions strong – corner goes w/ him
- Safety playing weak LB & Strongside LB blitz
- Kmet is blocking Garrett so Dime Back shows blitz, but then drops
- Fields takes deep shot to Mooney
o He’s got pressure in his face immediately!
o About 1.5 seconds from snap to pressure.
- Tevin gets beat inside right away but is also eyeing blitzing ILB.
- Patrick doesn’t get in front of DT as Tevin is now helping on DE who beats Braxton inside & Fields is now pressured by blitzing ILB & Safety
- Scott gets tripped up by Braxton
- Fields can’t step up & has DT’s hand in his face as he’s throwing
- Incomplete – Punt
3rd Drive:
Play 1: 1st & 10
- 2 TE set to short side, 1 back to short side
- Mooney motions to wide side, defense shows zone.
- Both TE’s release, Mooney occupies ILB & Nickel with his route.
- DJ’s corner bails & is at least 5yds off
- DJ breaks to out route & Fields is throwing the out while DJ is 1 – 2 yards from still breaking out – GREAT EXAMPLE OF ANTICIPATION THROW!!! HE TRUSTS DJ!!!
- Nice throw over the nickel back for 7 yard gain
- Braxton, Tevin & Patrick hold up just enough for Fields to make a good throw he can step into…a rarity this game.
Play 2: 2nd & 3
- 2 TE set to wide side, Twins weak, 1 back weak, Gun
- 2 corners & Nickel to weak side, 1 corner off
- Mooney motions to wide side, corner goes with him – Browns in man
- Tonyan releases leaving Kmet on Garrett.
- Fields fake toss to Foreman to weak side & then boots to strong side. He has to get deep on this boot due to Garretts inside pressure, but Kmet does a decent job sealing him & allowing Fields to get outside.
- Fields getting outside brings up the weak side safety & pulls up the corner to Mooney.
- Tonyan is matched up with an ILB, Fields see Tonyan & throws and absolute DIME to the Browns 32 that he should catch & score…at the very least run for 10 more yards.
- IF TONYAN CATCHES THAT BALL 7 SCORES IT’S A 74 YARD GAIN…& AT THE LEAST A 50 YARD GAIN!!! HOW MUCH DIFFERENTLY ARE SOME OF YOU VIEWING FIELDS IF HIS TEAMMATE DOESN’T LET HIM DOWN??!!!
Play 3: 3rd & 3
- Trips right w/ TE split out, back weak, Gun
- Motion to bunch
- Kmet again stays in to block Garrett w/ Wright
- DJ running a GO route back side & is the 1st read
- Fields makes a great back shoulder throw from 26 yard line to Browns 46.5 yard line for a 27.5 yard gain & 1st down.
- DJ gets up quick and motions to run no huddle getting the Browns to burn a challenge – SMART!!
Play 4: 1st & 10
- Twins left, Tight Right, 1 Back weak, Gun
- Velus motions to strong side & Fields play fakes to him & then Foreman, which is useless cause Foreman is eyeing the blitzing Nickel after Velus motioned out.
- Browns run a twist on Braxton & Tevin
- Foreman is TIMID in stepping up to the blitzing Nickel & does a SHIT JOB!!! in his attempt to block…just o’lays the Nickel…not a DE or LB…A NICKEL!!!
- Fields is on the 3rd step of his drop & the Nickel is in his face pressuring him.
- Fields has to retreat & throw it away, there was nobody open!!
- It was max protect w/ DJ & Mooney running Go routes into cover 3…just terrible route options, nothing to check down to…only 2 real options – both deep!!
Play 5: 2nd & 10
- Twins Stack, Tight left, 1 Back, under center
- Velus motions weak, Browns have 8 in the box
- Before the snap I knew this was a run due to formation & so did the Browns.
- Browns DT is lined up in a 3 tech & does a great job timing the snap & splitting Tevin & Braxton, but Brax does a good job getting position while Tevin slides off to the safety who’s coming up and filling.
- Foreman cuts but Scott can’t hold his block long enough & Foreman is tackled for a 1 yard gain…FOREMAN LOOKS SLOW!
Play 6: 3rd & 9
- Twins right, TE split left off, 1 back weak, gun
- Mooney motions into Stack inside
- Justin looks like he’s about to throw to DJ as he’s about to break the deep out, but the Nickel does a good job sitting underneath & the safety right over the top forces Fields off that read
- Mooney has corner & safety in area…he’s not open
- Fields gets to his 3rd read, but by then he’s sacked. 3rd read was Kmet, and he was never open at any point either.
- Fields fumbles on sack…holding ball too low, but Tevin recovers.
- Fields had decent time on the play and this is one where he should have thrown the ball away because at no point in time were any of his receivers open.
- Punt
4th Drive:
Play 1: 1st & 10
- 2 TE set, Kmet split wide, 1 Back, under center
- Mooney motions to wide/Kmet side into Bunch
- Mooney motions back, faking Jet Sweep
- I knew this was a run play based on formation again!!
- Crack Toss to the wide side – flag for false start
Play 2: 1st & 15
- 2 TE left, 1 Back, Gun – Kmet lined up like a wing back
- Fields looks to DJ running a hitch…he’s covered like a blanket
- Fields comes off DJ & looks left, he’s got Mooney streaking down the sideline, Jones is getting bull rushed into Fields at the same time, but I think Fields could have gotten that ball out sooner.
- Jones is now on top of Fields so he can’t step into the throw, he slides left & by then its too late – pass is almost picked off.
Play 3: 2nd & 15
- 2 TE right, 1 Back, Gun
- DJ motions to Twins Left
- Fields fakes to Herbert & keeps on a designed run to 2 TE side, which is also the short side of the field for a 5 yard gain.
- I HATE running him to the short side of the field!!!! Gives him no space & could have been a bigger run to the wide side IMO.
Play 4: 3rd & 10
- Twins left, TE left split out, 1 Back weak, Gun
- Scott motions to slot
- RB screen weak side
- Terrible job by Davis & Rojo is almost tackled immediately
- Rojo makes man miss and gains a few yards.
- Punt
5th Drive:
Play 1: 1st & Goal @ the 1
- 2 TE right, Twins left, 1 back strong, Gun…FROM THE FRIGGEN 1!!!!
- Kmet motions behind Lewis & Wright
- Inside zone hand off & line gets NO PUSH!!!
- Foreman tackled for a loss
- THIS IS THE PLAY YOU RUN FROM THE 1???!!!
Play 2: 2nd & Goal from the 4
- Penalty – 12 men on the field for defense
Play 3: 2nd & Goal from the 2
- 3 TE’s right, 1 back strong, gun…AGAIN!!!
- Back shoulder fade to DJ – Penalty – PI defense
- Still not sure why there’s no slant here?! Based on the defensive formation its easy because there was no defender inside of DJ…literally NOBODY!!!
- It does look like it was an option route for DJ though…so who knows.
Play 4: 1st & Goal from the 1
- Penalty – 12 men on the field – defense
Play 5: 1st & Goal from the 1
- DBL Tight with a TE wing right, I formation…holy shit!!! A goal line formation on the goal line!!!
- ISO, Foreman is stopped for no gain
- If Foreman hits outside Wright he’s got a shot to score…he doesn’t see it and he doesn’t score.
Play 6: 2nd & Goal from the 1
- Penalty on Kmet – False Start
- Bears lined up in the Tush Push formation…why is Scott one of the men in the backfield pushing??!! Get bigger guys in there!!! Mooney was also lined up as a wing!! Get an extra o-lineman in there…put Sweat and TJ Edwards behind Fields and let’s get a friggen TD!!!
Play 7: 2nd & 5
- Trips left, Tight right, 1 Back trips side, Gun
- Scott motions right, back shifts right
- Mooney & DJ Bunch Stack
- Mooney runs an out, he’s open but Fields misses him – throw was late too…need a better throw there…rain and thumb seem to bother him (glove on, glove off, glove back on, etc)
Play 8: 3rd & 5
- Twins, Kmet split left, 1 Back weak, Gun
- Mooney motions left
- Fields 1st read is Kmet in the middle, but he’s got 3 guys on him & Fields is ALREADY under pressure & has to escape the pocket.
- Fields shrugs off Myles Freakin Garrett, goes right…he’s got no where to go, comes back left, escapes another defender with eyes downfield & sees Kmet streaking open towards the back corner of the end zone
- Fields throws a STRIKE beating the DB trying to break it up…just an absolute FASTBALL!!
- THIS IS THE TYPE OF MAGICAL PLAY ONLY FIELDS CAN MAKE!!! JUST PURE AWESOME!!
- ON THE BROWNS NEXT POSSESSION RESULTING IN TD, BEARS DEFENDERS DROPPED AT LEAST 2 TD’S.
6TH Drive:
Play 1: 1st & 10 @ 25
- Trips right, Tight left, 1 Back to Trips side, Gun
- DJ motions across formation left
- DJ motions back & fakes Jet Sweep
- Davis & Wright pull left on a designed QB run
- Kmet doesn’t stay on his block & Fields is tackled for a loss
- Garrett squeezes down fast & Davis can’t kick him out, Fields had to go around them
- If Kmet holds his block there is a lane for a couple of yards.
- Fields slides, gets hit anyway, no flag
Play 2: 2nd & 13
- Twins left, Tight right, 1 Back weak, Gun
- Browns blitz the Nickel lined up on Mooney
- Mooney does the right thing & looks for ball right away cause he’s the hot receiver – HE’S WIDE FRIGGEN OPEN!!!
- Fields hits him for a 9 yard gain – could argue ball should have been away a little sooner
Play 3: 3rd & 4
- Twins, 1 Back, Kmet out past #’s left, Gun
- Kmet motions in, then out, becoming wing left
- Browns show man
- Kmet chips Garrett & then releases into route.
- DJ clears out, Fields is eyeing him while Mooney does a whip route. As soon as DJ clears Justin’s eyes go to Mooney & he throws behind him & it could have been picked. Right read, Terrible throw
- Punt.
7th Drive:
Play 1: 1st & 10 @ own 2
- Jumbo right, 1 Back, under center
- Dive w/ Rojo for a 3 yard gain
- Browns weren’t even in a heavy front, had DT’s in a 3 & 1 tech, backers shaded strong looking to take the outside away & Bears still got NO PUSH!!!
Play 2: 2nd & 7 @ Chi 5
- Jumbo right again
- This time Browns stack the LOS, 5 DL & LB & SS
- Same play…this is SCARED playcalling IMO
- Rojo makes a GREAT cut to the weak side for a big 22 yard gain
- Braxton does an AWESOME job sealing off the DE & not giving ground (1 of his few highlights of the day), Rojo see’s DT goes inside, Whitehair holds up his block allowing Rojo to cut back in between Whitehair and Jones
Play 3: 1st & 10 @ Chi 27
- Twins right, TE right off, 1 Back weak, Gun
- Kmet again stays to help with Garrett
- Kmet eventually leaks out, don’t know if this was designed TE screen, but I think Velus is open down the sideline.
- Rojo absolutely WHIFFS on a block, Kmet can’t shake anyone & is tackled for a 1 yard loss
Play 4: 2nd & 11 @ Chi 26
- Twins left, Tight right off, 1 Back strong, Gun
- All Go routes…Kmet blocking
- DJ is going to cut in deep as Mooney occupies the safety taking him deep
- Fields ANTICIPATES & the ball is out BEFORE Dj cuts in. Fields delivers a strike to DJ for 20 yards & a 1st down.
- Fields trusts DJ & will throw with anticipation to him!!
Play 5: 1st & 10 @ Chi 46
- Trips right, 1 Back weak, Gun
- Kmet motions across left, again to help with Garrett
- All deep routes again!! Nobody’s eyes are looking for the ball & pocket collapses QUICK!!!
- Kmet leaks out finally & Fields hits him as he’s being taken down
- Kmet is able to get 6 ayrds
Play 6: 2nd & 4 @ Cle 48
- Twins, Kmet split left, 1 Back strong, Gun
- Fields 1st read is left w/ DJ running a rub route for Kmet.
- Fields throws as Kmet breaks (ANTICIPATION) & completes for 5 yards & a 1st down.
- Brax is getting blown back into Fields on this play.
Play 7: 1st & 10 @ Cle 43
- Twins right, Tight left split, 1 Back strong, Gun
- All deep routes AGAIN!!!
- Nobody is open before the pocket collapses
- Rojo leaks out after a WEAK chip block attempt & Fields try’s to hit him as he’s being sacked.
- Rojo catches & gains a yard.
- Patrick is BLOWN UP on this play and the backs were awful in pass pro all game!
Play 8: 2nd & 9 @ Cle 42
- Empty, Trips right
- WR screen right w/ DJ, Out route with Mooney left
- Fields hits Mooney on the out for 5 yards
Play 9: 3rd & 4 @ Cle 37
- Twins left, Tight right off, 1 Back strong, Gun
- DJ runs rub route for Mooney
- If Fields throws earlier this could be a 1st down
- Fields throws late giving the safety time to break it up.
- It’s clear he’s lost trust in Mooney…he’s willing to let it rip to Kmet and DJ…but won’t do it with Mooney.
Play 10: 4th & 4 @ Cle 37
- Hail Mary time
- Fields is pressured immediately
- The Browns lineman literally takes 4 steps & the hits Fields high!!!
- Flus needs to start losing his shit, both in the game on the side line & during press conferences!!! Take the fucking fine!!! Plead for your QB to be protected like all the rest!!! Enough of this “we send the tape into the league” bullshit!!
2nd Half
Drive 1:
Play 1: 1st & 10 @ Chi 25
- Double TE right, 1 Back, Pistol
- Tonyan motions left
- Terrible friggen snap!!! & then Patrick whiffs on his block & there’s pressure up the middle right away!!!
- Zone read, Fields gives for some reason & Foreman is tackled for a loss
- This play is 99% on Patrick, he killed the play!!!
Play 2: 2nd & 14
- Double Tight, Twins right, Pistol
- Scott motions left
- DT jumps offsides & no penalty is called
- Fields is supposed to fake zone read, but he has to abandon it early due to pressure from the offsides DT.
- Scott is being asked to stay in & help block Garrett!!!!! WHY???!!!
- Fields scrambles right & has DJ open down field for a hot second, but he throws it away.
Play 3: 3rd & 14
- Twins, Kmet split wide right, 1 Back strong
- Inside receivers both clear out & outside receivers run 5yd In routes
- Fields has DJ open on the In route but the way DJ was running he couldn’t have been the 1st or 2nd read, cause he’s clearly not running full speed.
- Pocket collapses & Fields dumps off to Rojo
- Braxton is beat pretty quickly to the outside by Garrett
- I’m not sure who the frig this play is supposed to be designed for…just poor.
- Punt
Drive 2:
Play 1: 1st & 10 @ Chi 30
- Double Tight right, Pistol
- Tonyan motions to Fullback on left side
- Play fake to Herbert left, boot right
- Kmet is blocking Garrett, he releases Garrett and leaks out
- Is Tonyan supposed to now block Garrett?! I don’t know & neither does he cause he’s blocking nobody as he moves to the right side!!!
- Fields has to cut his boot short & step up, he sees green & runs for a 2 yard gain
- Essentially a 2 man route scheme & nobody is open!!
Play 2: 2nd & 8 @ Chi 32
- Trips Bunch right short side, 1 Back, under center
- Watch it be a run!
- Yep, crack toss to the short side of the field…WHY???!!
- Velus does a nice job and gains 15 yards
- Would have been more but Patrick got in the way of Velus!!
Play 3: 1st & 10 @ Chi 47
- Twins left, Double Tight right, 1 Back, under center
- Kmet motions right
- Run play?
- Nope!! Fake toss right to Herbert
- Kmet comes back across the formation to help on Garrett with Lewis
- Another 2 man route combo in what looks like cover 2
- Mooney in slot stumbles into his break & is covered as he works to deep Out.
- DJ has corner underneath and safety over the top – THERE’S NO WHERE TO GO WITH THE BALL!!!
- Herbert leaks out and Fields checks down to him for a 4 yard gain
- If Mooney doesn’t stumble he may have been able to get open, but it would have been a real tight window with the underneath corner on DJ
- Browns have 2 man routes covered easy.
- Herbert has no juice!
Play 4: 2nd & 6 @ Cle 49
- Twins right stack, Tight right, 1 Back, under center
- Run?
- Velus Jet motion left, Fields hands to him for Jet Sweep & then play fakes to RB right
- They do a great job getting playside DE to bite on play fake to the back
- Blocked up well all around
- Velus does a great job putting his head down and gets the 1st.
Play 5: 1st & 10 @ Cle 41
- Bunch right, Pistol
- Snap isn’t great
- DJ cracks on DE left and then releases
- Blasingame on Garrett as Fields play fakes left and boots right towards him
- Blasingame was on the outside of the bunch formation and had to go WAY across to attempt to block Garrett!! TOUGH!! I’m impressed he was even able to get a hand on him. If he doesn’t Fields is a dead man.
- Fields takes the boot deep to avoid Garrett and has Scott open in the flat
- He delivers to Scott and Scott runs for a 15 yard gain
- This was actually a nice route design concept:
o Kmet occupies the safety and deep corner
o SS gets sucked up by the play fake leaving Scott open. If the LB comes up on Scott, eventually DJ would be open, but the LB stays disciplined in his hook drop.
o Not sure what the playside corner is doing getting so deep, but it leaves Scott open. My guess is SS was supposed to be underneath.
Play 6: 1st & 10 @ Cle 26
- Twins left, I formation, under center
- Run?
- Kmet motions in tight on left side
- Yep! Crack toss – whole Browns defense knew it
- Mooney gets his ass handed to him by the SS he’s supposed to crack on. He’s on skates getting driven back!
- Browns string it out and Herbert is tackled for a 1 yard loss
- Why the hell is Mooney the one making that block??!! He’s 175 pounds soaking wet!!
- They’re apparently asking Patrick to get to the Mike backer who’s lined up over Braxton Jones. How is that possible??!!
o I think maybe Jones is supposed to take that LB while Patrick continues to 2nd/3rd level, but Jones doesn’t do that.
- Now Blasingame has to block the LB that neither Braxton or Patrick blocked, and that LB already has a nice head of steam at the LOS.
- Mooney can’t hold his block even with Jones help which leaves the playside corner free.
- Herbert has to cut in, but Blasingame doesn’t hold his block on the Mike so he’s there for the TFL
- Bad design and bad execution
Play 7: 2nd & 11 @ Cle 27
- Twins stack right, Tight right, Pistol
- Mooney motions to slot right – Twins right
- Mooney motions back right, Browns running a zone blitz – left side Nickel blitz’s, DT drops into coverage
- Nobody is blocking Garrett!!! He hits Mooney as he’s coming across
- Fields play fakes to RB who then picks up Garrett, who by now is already 3 yards in the backfield
- Scott runs a 3 yard hitch, DJ going deep backside, Kmet carrying LB up the seam and Mooney is in the flat near Scott
- Playside corner also blitzes and the RB gets his ass kicked by Garrett!
- Whitehair gets beat outside and Jones has another blitzer
- Fields is gonna get smashed by 3 guys as he’s about to throw – ZERO TIME!!!
- Despite that, he delivers a strike to Scott
- Rojo has to do better on Garrett…just poor effort by RB group all game.
Play 8: 3rd & 7 @ Cle 23
- Trips left, 1 Back weak, Gun
- DJ on weak side singled up – Cle in press on him
- SS blitzes
- Kmet on left chips on DE and then releases
- All deep routes except Kmet
- Fields throws deep to DJ, but its not a good throw and is incomplete
- Kmet is open in the flat and you could argue Fields should go there, but I doubt he gets the 1st and he’s probably the 3rd read.
- Play was designed to go to DJ, they wanted the 1 on 1
- Fields has to give DJ a chance, he doesn’t. It was the correct decision, bad throw.
- Hoge mentioned Kmets footwork and you can see it on this play with the inside foot up. He has trouble getting to the block.
- Patrick sucks!
- Mooney clearly getting held as he cuts across the field.
- While Fields has to deliver a better ball to DJ, he’s covered pretty good, he’s not 100%
Play 9: 4th & 7 @ Cle 23
- Field goal
Drive 3:
Play 1: 1st & 10 @ Chi 42
- TE Wing right, 1 Back, under center
- 8 in the box…you think Browns have picked up on this?
- Blasingame motions left, then comes back right as ball is snapped, Fields boots right
- Play fake right, Blasingame is responsible for blitzing SS to the boot side
- Blasingame is off balance and loses his footing
- It’s a 2 man route combo AGAIN!!!
- Ah, they’re clearing out and it’s a RB screen to the play fake side
- Fields still has 3 guys right in his face
- Fields hitches as he see’s pressure in his face, probably because the DE Jones is supposed to block is 2 yards in front of Rojo and Braxton is also directly in front of Rojo.
- Rojo doesn’t adjust to give Fields a throwing window
- Fields now has to attempt to throw over both the jumping DE AND Jones to try and hit Rojo…he has no shot without floating it, leaving it susceptible to being picked. Smart to throw it away.
- Could have been a big play because it was 3 blockers on 1 on the outside…Rojo could have walked into the end zone
Play 2: 2nd & 10 @ Chi 42
- Twins right, 1 Back strong, Gun
- Velus Jet motions left and fakes Jet Sweep
- Fields keeps and runs right
- I think DJ is supposed to crack the DE while Wright pulls, but DE slants in and DJ blocks nobody – he eventually picks up the DE as he cuts back out
- Both Wright and Rojo miss the outside corner who cuts inside them and now is a free runner on Fields
- They also both miss the ILB and Fields has no where to go – corner has him head on, Backer has him outside, and another defender pursuing has him back side.
- Fields gives himself up
- Browns had this sniffed out right away – nobody bit on the play fake, and theres already 6 defenders play side pre-snap…play had no shot.
Play 3: 3rd & 16 @ Chi 36
- Trips left, 1 Back strong, Gun
- Play fake to Rojo right, WR screen left
- I have no fucking clue what Braxton Jones was doing here! He opens up to the wide side DE and shows his hands, but NEVER TOUCHES HIM!!! He watches him run by and then gets out to block for the WR screen. Fields now has the DE right in his face and throwing lane as he’s trying to throw to DJ!!
- DE jumps and bats down the pass
- Somehow DJ catches it, but Whitehair literally watches the LB run past him, Jones AGAIN watches his man run past him and there are now 5 Browns surrounding DJ and he’s tackled for a loss…JESUS CHRIST!!!
- The tight view is even more infuriating!! Jones NEVER touches Myles Garrett…NEVER FUCKING TOUCHES HIM!!!!
- Scott tries, but he’s too small to block and Kmet gets caught in no man’s land cause Scott can’t hold his block and Jones again doesn’t lay a hand on anyone, so Kmet tries to block both their guys and ends up blocking nobody.
- Holy shit that was bad!!
- Punt
Drive 4:
Play 1: 1st & 10 @ Chi 35
- Empty – Trips left
- Foreman chips weak side and releases to the flat
- DJ cuts to shallow Post @ 3 yards
- Trips side Kmet runs a 5yd out, Mooney runs a 3yd Out and Taylor clears out deep
- Kmet is open and Fields throws to him, but he drops it.
- Ball is a little behind Kmet
- By time Fields hits his drop and is in his throwing motion to Kmet (who has not broke into his out route yet!! ANTICIPATION THROW!!!), Jones is being pushed back into Fields and he is hit by Jones man AND Whithairs man as he throws
- Looks like he got hit in the face…dude just gets no calls
- Awful job by the o-line
Play 2 2nd & 10 @ Chi 35
- Trips left, Tight right, 1 Back strong, Gun
- HOLY FUCKING SLOW SNAP!!! Took at least a half a second to get back there.
- Zone Read to Foreman with a WR screen to trips side
- Fields keeps and runs right, but Browns play it great
- Backside DE doesn’t crash down hard enough and SS comes up and fills lane, forcing Justin to deep to get around them.
- Like only Fields can, he does get around them and gains 8 yards
Play 3: 3rd & 2 @ Chi 43
- Empty – Trips left
- Rojo motions to Stack Right
- Kmet cracks down on left DE and Jones pulls left
- Whitehair gets his ass handed to him and is beat immediately inside, forcing the running Fields to adjust around him
- Fields runs for a 15 yard gain
Play 4: 1st & 10 @ Cle 42
- Double TE left, Twins right, 1 Back strong, Gun
- Kmet motions between Lewis and Jones
- Another slow friggen snap!!!
- Zone Read – Fields gives…no push up front!
- Braxton gets pushed back and the hole that was there is now gone, forcing Foreman right.
- Jones then lets his man cross his face and get the 1st hit on Foreman and Foreman has to fight to get 2 yards.
Play 5: 2nd & 8 @ Cle 40
- Tight left, Off Set I left, Gun
- Blasingame motions out to the left
- DJ is 1 on 1 on the right side = 1st read
- DJ looks like he has an option route, corner is playing press man, DJ releases outside and breaks for a 5 yd hitch.
- Fields is throwing the ball before Dj is in his break – ANTICIPATION!!! HE TRUSTS DJ!
- Corner is playing him and breaks up the pass, could argue defensive PI
Play 6: 3rd & 8 @ Cle 40
- Tight right, Twins left, 2 backs ( DJ )
- DJ motions out of backfield
- SLOW FUCKING SNAP!!
- Zone Read, Fields gives
- Line blocks well, but Whitehair can’t stay on his man and he gets Rojo by the ankles
- Rojo plows ahead though and gains 7 yards
Play 7: 4th & 1 @ Cle33
- Trips Bunch right, Tight left, 1 Back, under center
- Velus Jet motions right
- Fields opens right and play fakes to Foreman left
- Everyone but the backside DB’s bite
- Mooney somehow can’t make a block – this should have been a huge run play!
- On the snap, Mooney’s man steps inside, but Mooney steps outside. Mooney then does a shit job of recovering and his man is upfield with leverage and he does a crap jobs trying to regain leverage.
- Somehow the defender clips Fields ankle and he’s stopped just short
- I know people are saying he could thrown to DJ, but he’s trying to get the 1st and I’m sure he thought he had it.
- Mooney screws this play up big time!
Drive 5:
Play 1: 1st & 10 @ Chi 25
- Double TE right, Pistol
- DJ motions across to Twins left
- Snap is low and slow – good for smoking meat…not so much for snapping the ball!
- Read play and Fields gives to Herbert for a gain of 7 yards
- Herbert does a great job setting up the MLB to be blocked by Wright
- would have liked him to make the safety miss, but he keeps the offense on schedule.
Play 2: 2nd & 3 @ Chi 32
- Double Tight, Twins left, 1 Back strong, Gun
- Kmet motions behind Lewis and Wright
- Browns have 8 in the box and 5 on the LOS
- Another read play – Fields gives to Herbert
- Looked like he got the 1st but they say he’s short, gain of 2
Play 3: 3rd & 1 @ Chi 34
- Unbalanced right, TE left, 1 Back, under center
- Scott comes in Jet motion right and receives the handoff
- They’ve got Braxton as the TE right…could this be anymore of a give away that a run is headed that way?!
- They let the playside DE come free and he tackles Scott for a loss
- I have so many friggen issues with this play!!
o Why run this to this cute bullshit? Line up and QB sneak it or dive with a RB!
o If you’re gonna run this cute bullshit, why do it with Scott?! Why not Velus?
o And why to the short side of the field?!
Drive 6:
Play 1: 1st & 10 @ Chi 33
- Twins right, TE left, Pistol
- Scott motions right and then back left
- Browns in man
- 9 in the box
- Fake Jet Sweep to RPO
- Scott is now helping on Garrett – 2 man route combo again
- SS has nobody to cover so he blitzes
- Both WR’s running deep In routes
- Fields throws to DJ as he’s breaking in but blitzing SS isn’t picked up and hits Fields arm as he throws – incomplete
- Rojo should’ve picked up the blitzing SS, but for some reason he goes right and helps Patrick with his man, which Patrick is doing a solid job for once…until that guy remembers that Patrick sucks and he tosses Patrick to the side like a rage doll.
Play 2: 2nd & 10 @ Chi 33
- Double Tight End right, 1 Back strong, gun
- DJ Jet motions left
- Fields shows read option right and gives to Rojo for a 1 yard gain
- Rojo’s lane closes INSTANTLY cause Davis can’t hold his block. He’s 1 on 1, Davis has to win.
Play 3: 3rd & 9 @ Chi 34
- Trips right, 1 Back strong, Gun
- Mooney motions left to Bunch
- FINALLY!!! A NICE RELEASE/ROUTE COMBO!!! Only took to the 6th drive of the second half to get one!
- DJ and Mooney are going deep while Tonyan cuts out at 5 yards short of 1st down
- Tonyan is open, but he’s short of 1st down
- Fields feels pressure from his backside and sprints out right and has a lot of space the pick up the 1st down
- The route/release combo was good at first, but essentially it was 2 Go routes and a shallow out – MEH easy to cover
- The schemed release got me excited, but of course the play design disappointed me
Play 4: 1st & 10 @ Chi 43
- Twins left, Double TE right, 1 Back strong, Gun
- Read option right
- Fields gives to Rojo and he grinds out 3 tough yards
- Rojo didn’t have much room to operate
Play 5: 2nd & 7 @ Chi 46
- Trips right, 1 Back, under center
- Lewis motions left to tight bunch right
- Browns roll up the SS and show blitz from bunch side
- Play fake left, its not great because LDE takes a wide outside attack and Rojo has to take his path wider to help chip.
- Another 2 man route scheme with both receivers going deep
- As soon as Fields hits the last step on his drop Braxton is beat by his man and Lewis and Blasingame are beat by their’s. No receiver is ready for a pass – they’re still working down field.
- The blitzing SS is within 2 yards of Fields when he hits the last step of his drop
- Fields has no shot and no where to ho
- He cant even step up because Patrick gets beat by the DT
- He can’t slide left because the ILB fills cause there no receiver threatening his zone
- No receivers are open and Fields is sacked for an 11 yard loss
Play 6: 3rd & 18 @ Chi 35
- Twins, 1 Back strong, gun
- Kmet motions right, Trips right
- Browns in Dime – looks like quarters coverage
- Wright is beat IMMEDIATELY!!!
- Braxton is beat outside, but the RB has to step up middle because BOTH Patrick and Whitehair are beat by the ONE guy they’re combo blocking
- Once again Fields has no where to step up to or roll out
- Ok…looks to be a RB screen – I’m on edge after watching this o-lines performance today
- Both Whitehair and Patrick block NOBODY, but Rojo didn’t help set them up either.
- Rojo gains 12 yards
- Punt
Drive 7:
Play 1: 1st & 10 @ Chi 25
- Trips Bunch right, Tight left, 1 Back, under center
- Mooney Jet motions right
- Kmet is cracking down on Garrett while Jones pulls left
- Crack toss left
- Kmet couldn’t get a good angle on Garrett and whiffs
- Herbert can’t get outside and tries to cut back, but can’t escape Garrett
- Even if Herbert could avoid Garrett and cut back, Patrick is getting his ass kicked by the DT so he’d run right into the DT as well as the backside DE.
- Loss of 5 yards
Play 2: 2nd & 15 @ Chi 20
- Trips right, TE left, 1 Back left, Gun
- SS blitzes up the middle
- Kmet chips Garrett and then gets into route…finally!! More than 2 receiving options
- Tonyan runs a shallow Whip route
- Fields hits the last step of his drop and SS is 3 yards from him in his face because Herbert whiffed on his block
- Fields hits that last step and is in his throwing motion, he’s going to Mooney who’s running a corner route I think
- Mooney isn’t open yet or looking for the ball ( anticipation )
- Fields is hit as he throws and over throws Mooney, who also slowed down on the route
- Fields gets hit in the head…no call
Play 3: 3rd & 15 @ Chi 20
- Trips right, 1 Back left, Gun
- Mooney motions right
- Finally, another schemed release, except its 3rd & 15 so Browns are in zone and playing WAY off
- It’s a 3 man route combo against 7 Browns in coverage. Kmet stayed in to block
- Mooney and Tonyan run a rub route, but theres no defenders to rub!
- Tonyan cuts in @ 10 yards, short of 1st
- DJ 1on 1 backside and going deep, he settles into zone between corner and safety who are high/lowing him
- Mooney running a corner
- Browns have this played perfectly, they’re set up with great angles on all receiving options.
- Fields is under pressure from Garrett and he dumps it off to Rojo who’s tackled right away for a gain of 3
- Punt
Drive 8
Play 1: 1st & 10 @ Chi 25
- Trips right, 1 Back weak, Gun
- Slow snap
- Rojo is chipping Garrett, but Braxton is leaning outside too much, Garrett feels that and spins off the chip to the inside – Brax and Rojo are beat
- 3 man route combo deep with Kmet leaking out late to the right
- Fields rolls right, the corner bites up on Kmet and Scott settles in the now open zone
- Fields sees it and rips pass to Scott for what would have been a 25 yard gain, but Scott drops it
- Thankfully Garret spun right into the DT that Whitehair blocked outside and they took each other out
- Fields made the play, Scott let him down
- If Fields doesn’t roll right the corner keeps his depth and Scott isn’t open’
Play 2: 2nd & 10 @ Chi 25
- Trips right, Tight right, Empty
- Really double tight, trips right because Kmet and Lewis stay in to block
- Browns playing WAY off and deep
- Scott runs a shallow Whip route…he could have done whatever he wanted – nobody is covering a 5 yard route
- Mooney running a corner, DJ up the seam
- Kmet eventually leaks out to the middle and Rojo, who was lined up at TE/wing right leaks out into the flat
- Fields checks DJ up the seam and then Mooney on corner – they’re covered so he goes to 3rd read and rips to Scott who then makes up for the drop by making some guys miss and gains 30 yards
- O-line did a good job this play
- Rojo almost screwed this play by jumping and reaching for the pass
Play 3: 1st & 10 @ Cle 45
- Twins, 1 Back right, Gun
- Kmet motions right, trips bunch right
- DJ is 1 on 1 on left side with DB 8 yards off
- SLOW ASS SNAP
- Scott runs a rub route for Kmet and Mooney
- DJ running skinny post back side – He’s open but he isn’t 1st read and he’s not looking for the ball when he breaks in
- Now Kmet rubs for Mooney who’s running a sluggo with Rojo in the flat left – This might be the best route combo I saw all day!
- If Mooney stays with slant he’d be open too
- DJ turns his skinny post into a post corner
- Everyone is covered, Fields checks down to Rojo, who is covered
- Braxton was beat right away forcing Fields to roll right, so even if he wanted to hit DJ he wouldn’t be able to
- Fields essentially threw the ball away
- If Mooney was looking on the slant and Fields throws it, its definitely offensive PI
Play 4: 2nd & 10 @ Cle 45
- Twins, 1 Back right, Gun
- Kmet motions left to trips – Browns show man
- Dj 1 on 1 backside with corner 10 yards off him
- Browns rush 2 and then LB delay blitzes
- Rojo for some reason goes right to pass block
- Garrett SMOKES Braxton off the ball and has a free run at Fields
- DJ is open on the right side, but Fields reads start on the left
- He doesn’t have time to go through his progressions because he has to escape Garrett
- LB spying Justin comes up and is gonna hit Fields as he’s throwing to Kmet cutting out – incomplete
- Snap is SLOW!
- Routes take too long to develop
- Wright and Davis are the only one’s who blocked anybody – Braxton barely touches Garrett
- Whitehair and Patrick help NOBODY!
- Fields has to throw on the run across his body while being hit
Play 5: 3rd & 10 @ Cle 45
- Trips left, Empty
- Hail Mary time
- Garrett beats Braxton right away AGAIN forcing Fields left
- We know how this ends…
***Heard this on CHGO and I think this too…if Bears trade Fields and draft Caleb/Maye, they better be ELITE FRIGGEN QB’s!!!
***Baldy mentioned it, and you'll see it in my notes: Receivers didn't do a whole lot of winning in this game.
Despite all the things I just mentioned, Getsy thought it would be a great idea to run with a game plan consisting of a ton of deep shots that took a long time to develop while going against a hall of fame pass rusher and a good pass rushing defensive line overall.
1st Drive:
