Based off of Spotrac. Fields would earn 43.9 million a year. Do we still sign him long term even if he finishes average?
For me, the decision tree is:
Do we move on and draft a new QB #1? Or do we stick with Fields and exercise his 5th year option?
The former means you are cleaning house on the coaching staff. The latter means Flus and Getsy will be back. I'm firmly of the opinion that Flus, Getsy, and JF are a package deal at this point. You aren't keeping 1 or 2 of them and replacing the other 1 or 2.
There's no way I see JF getting a long term contract at this point. He does seem to be improving, Flus/Getsy do seem to coaching better, but I'm wondering why it took this long?
And even with all that, Fields has only 1 game with 300+ yards passing and only a handful with 250+.

Talent makes geniuses of us all, my friend. And while he may only have 1 300+ yard passing game, he's got 8 300+ yard offense games. Again, you all need to get past this "pass only" idea of QB's. And yes, I know the importance of the passing game, but the league is trending different at the QB position. Its about OFFENSE in total, not just in one dimension. Beyond that, Dan Marino couldn't throw for 300 yards with the bums we trotted out at the position last season.
I go back to what Fields did as an accurate deep pass, big play guy at OSU. Bring in Marvin Harrison Jr to pair with DJ Moore - and an ascending Kmet - and I think we're in for a real treat. Fields can be lethal with the deep ball. We just haven't set him up here (yet) to "be" that guy. The OL has only recently matured to a unit that can give him the protection needed for that kind of game. The IOL still is weak as hell in the center of the OL (Patrick is the weak link there and the pocket gets penetrated too easily/quickly). But I think Fields will be that passer who can also kill you with the run too. Both. Of course we need a real OC who can pull all of this together in 2024. But I believe the Bears will do that. I 100% believe that the key is MHJ. He is the key that unlocks everything good for us in 2024 and beyond... and for years to come too.
I know he can throw the deep ball. What he doesn't seem to be able to do is throw anticipation throws and the intermediate throws. That's my concern if the Bears are going to shovel out 44M a year on a guy who, IMO at least, is incomplete, then we might as well draft one now who will at minimum be on rookie salary. I think this is Fields at his peak right now.
One of the TV analysts last week (maybe Tony Romo) described Fields as a “sight thrower”. He sees the guy is open and throws. He is getting better at anticipation throwing, but it’s still a work in progress year-3.
At this point, no, hes not worth 44mil per year. Luckily, we dont need to make that decision now.
But, hes just not that good in his 3rd year. Could he play better (stat wise) with shitheads like Tonyan and Mooney holding on to sure TDs, yes! It still does not mean that he is irreplacable.
What I would do, is bring Harbaugh in and have him have the final say bout Fields. And I would be 100% on with anything he chooses.

Flutsy out !!
Virtually nobody in this game is irreplaceable, especially at the QB position. There's a handful of guys, maybe, that teams would deem untouchable in a trade scenario...after that, everyone is available for the right price. Fields doesn't need to perform at an "irreplaceable" level, thats damn near impossible. Maybe to win given the talent and coaching he's been surrounded by he needs to perform that way, but he really shouldn't have to.

Agree completely. The Glus needs to be gone and a real HC with a track record of success (Harbaugh) brought in. I'm confident he will know what to do with Fields.
I think I am about done with him personally. Its true that he hasn't had great coaching and the best surrounding cast. His diehard defenders will NEVER LET THAT GO. For some of them, the excuses will never, ever, ever end. For me, the "highs" of the Justin Fields experience (as Hoge puts it) are simply not worth all the lows. I noticed Jahns shut Hoge down last night after Hoge once again tried to blame receiver drops for the loss. While true the Tonyan play was awful, Fields and the O had many, many chances to put that game on ice and couldn't. The O scored only 3 points outside of being gifted 1st and goal on the 1 by the EJax INT. Even then, it took them 8 snaps to get into the EZ.
Once again, Fields was outplayed by a crap QB (who was on his couch a month ago) and once again he melted in the 4th Q when he had a game-winning drive there for the taking with 3:08 left in a tie game. I don't care about the Hail Mary INT but I do care about yet another fumble and his inability to pass for > 200 yards consistently. That's a low bar and BTW he had less than 200 yards passing and rushing combined so you can't say he made up for it on the ground. Old man Joe Flacco had over 200 yards passing in the 4th quarter alone. After 35 starts, Fields still has only a handful of truly "good games". He has had plenty of chances to elevate.
We are 99% eliminated from the playoffs now and are now guaranteed yet another losing season record. It's time to turn the page on this coaching staff and this QB. Flush all 3 -- Flus, Getsy, and Fields. I really hope Warren and Poles have seen enough of all 3 of these guys.

I dont believe I ever thought he needs to perform at irreplaceable level, hell I never ever even hoped for it. I wouldnt dare. Just saying that I would leave his evaluation to a football guy, in our case Harbaugh. And I would back up that evaluation. Too many variables for me to come to a conclusion/solution.
