Do you expect Poles to capitulate to anything Fields demands?
No...thats generally NOT how negotiations work. LOL...would I expect Poles to give Fields $50 mill a year fully guaranteed? No...thats just silly on its face. In a good negotiation both sides give some ground. Either way, this is beyond premature. The Bears DON'T have to sign Fields to an extension this off season...they have 2 to 3 years of control after this season. I don't get the consternation.
The urgency is that Bears have #1 pick in 2024 draft. After he has given ground, will Poles stand firm on his final offer to JJ as he did with Roquan and trade him if JJ doesn’t agree? That would make him 2-for-2 heading into the Fields negotiation.
Roquan isn't a quarterback. Poles stuck to his guns and got TWO guys who are studs for the price of Roquan. I don't think JJ and his contract have any bearing on Fields and his contract.
Bears won’t be drafting top-10 in 2025, so “moving on” at that time is a very different proposition than 2024 with choice of every QB in the draft. Kicking the can down the road has an opportunity cost. By 2025, Fields will be better than any rookie we could get in the draft, and that is the last year of Moore’s contract. I figure 2025 is our Super Bowl ready year. If not, major changes should be coming.
I don't disagree with anything you said. It will be interesting to see if they do trade out of the #1 pick this year what kind of haul they could get and how that could be used in future drafts. It will also be interesting to see how the front office and coaching staff views the team after this season. I would think that if they view the team as ready to compete for a playoff spot it would make drafting a rookie QB unlikely because that essentially resets he development of that position. Any rookie QB, no matter their pedigree is going to have growing pains and need to develop. I would think if their timeline matches up with yours, they're keeping Fields and stock piling weapons.

I get that...and it muddies the waters a bit. However, I still think picking up the 5th year option is a no brainer. Whether they are moving on or not, thats the first move you make.
Also, I don't think the Roquan/JJ comparisons are apples to apples. Roquan handled his situation about as badly as you could, the complete opposite of how JJ has handled this. I also think the QB position is VERY different from every other position and how he might handle those negotiations will mirror that. Of course this is all my opinion as I have no true idea what Poles will do or how he will handle it.

In the end, he will make his final offer to JJ and Fields. Then SOMEONE will have to capitulate. That’s why I asked you the question “Will Poles capitulate to anything Fields wants?” He might capitulate to Fields because he’s a QB, but not to Smith or JJ, because he’d rather have a second round pick than give them what they want. If he’s “blown away” (his words) by Williams/Maye, he might trade Fields for a second round pick in the draft.

Again, I think its rare any side gets exactly what they want in a negotiation and never has to give up anything. As for draft compensation if they trade Fields...we'll see how he does to finish out the season...he may garner more than a 2. Remember we gave up a 2 for Chase Claypool...and we know there were other teams willing to do the same thing at the time. What would teams like Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Seattle, or Arizona(who has 2 first round picks in 24) be willing to give up to get a good, young QB?

He may get more for Fields, but that’s a side note. What I am saying is that Poles may be a “man of principle” and one of his principles may be “I’m not paying ANY player more than I think he’s worth.” In that case, if Smith, JJ, Fields, or any player rejects his final, bottom line offer, he will trade them. If he has no such principle, he may capitulate to anything Fields wants. We don’t have enough data on Poles yet to know, but we could get a clue from the JJ negotiation.
I'm sure you're right. I just hope it isn't with the Bears if it's that much.
Its really not that much when you consider the extensions already signed and what the market is trending to. I covered it in my previous post. $12 mill less per year than Burrows. Beyond that, he brings more to the table than just his passing, which is improving and the league is trending in the direction of the type of QB Fields is. He does things only 1 or 2 other guys in the league can do. Stop thinking about the position as just someone who throws passes...its becoming more than that...it isn't the 80's/90's/early 2000's anymore. The league is evolving and so is the position.
I have to disagree some. The QBs winning SBs are passers who can run not runners who can kinda pass

I go back to what Fields did as an accurate deep pass, big play guy at OSU. Bring in Marvin Harrison Jr to pair with DJ Moore - and an ascending Kmet - and I think we're in for a real treat. Fields can be lethal with the deep ball. We just haven't set him up here (yet) to "be" that guy. The OL has only recently matured to a unit that can give him the protection needed for that kind of game. The IOL still is weak as hell in the center of the OL (Patrick is the weak link there and the pocket gets penetrated too easily/quickly). But I think Fields will be that passer who can also kill you with the run too. Both. Of course we need a real OC who can pull all of this together in 2024. But I believe the Bears will do that. I 100% believe that the key is MHJ. He is the key that unlocks everything good for us in 2024 and beyond... and for years to come too.

Again, I didn't say what the league WAS...I said what it was TRENDING TO. Fields, and QB's like him are the future. Also, Fields can pass, stop with the nonsense that he can't. Maybe he can't to scrubs who aren't in the league anymore...but name me the QB that can. Look at Mahomes with the scrubs not named Kelce this year.

I know he can throw the deep ball. What he doesn't seem to be able to do is throw anticipation throws and the intermediate throws. That's my concern if the Bears are going to shovel out 44M a year on a guy who, IMO at least, is incomplete, then we might as well draft one now who will at minimum be on rookie salary. I think this is Fields at his peak right now.
