Roquan got market value from Ravens. They are thrilled to have him. Poles said himself that he doesn’t value ILB that high, and stuck by his guns to the end. Let’s hope we don’t have same problem with JJ. If JJ gets his extension without a lot of drama with Poles, that would be good news for Fields.
As I recall, it was a difference in perceived value between Smith and the Bears. Part of that is the difference in defensive schemes. Smith is an excellent 3-4 ILB and Baltimore runs a base 3-4 as opposed to the Bears who were switching back to a 4-3 base defense.

I remember that. I think it was more about the money. Poles said he wanted to keep him and made what Poles considered a good offer. Roquan was adapting to the 4-3, and was leading the league in tackles when Poles traded him.
Fields isn't worth 44M a year. He's mid to below tier for passing QBs, and that's ultimately what they are paid on. Next would be availability. He's guaranteed to miss 2+ games a year as that's what he's done so far in his career. He's 22nd ranked in TD passes.

Roquan isn't a quarterback. Poles stuck to his guns and got TWO guys who are studs for the price of Roquan. I don't think JJ and his contract have any bearing on Fields and his contract.

Guarantee you the market will say different.
I'm sure you're right. I just hope it isn't with the Bears if it's that much.

Do you expect Poles to capitulate to anything Fields demands?

It sure will be interesting. The Bears have Fields for 2024 on a cheap $6mil contract (cheap for QB1s). Then they could pick up his 5th year option for 2025 for around $20mil. My worry is that the Bears will draft a QB for the $$$ reset but not get MHJ - that would be the collateral damage. Maybe it would make sense to keep Fields for '24 and see if he is the guy with a loaded O roster, and then pay him or move on from him. If they did move on at that point the new guy would come into a great offense of support.

Its really not that much when you consider the extensions already signed and what the market is trending to. I covered it in my previous post. $12 mill less per year than Burrows. Beyond that, he brings more to the table than just his passing, which is improving and the league is trending in the direction of the type of QB Fields is. He does things only 1 or 2 other guys in the league can do. Stop thinking about the position as just someone who throws passes...its becoming more than that...it isn't the 80's/90's/early 2000's anymore. The league is evolving and so is the position.

No...thats generally NOT how negotiations work. LOL...would I expect Poles to give Fields $50 mill a year fully guaranteed? No...thats just silly on its face. In a good negotiation both sides give some ground. Either way, this is beyond premature. The Bears DON'T have to sign Fields to an extension this off season...they have 2 to 3 years of control after this season. I don't get the consternation.

Bears won’t be drafting top-10 in 2025, so “moving on” at that time is a very different proposition than 2024 with choice of every QB in the draft. Kicking the can down the road has an opportunity cost. By 2025, Fields will be better than any rookie we could get in the draft, and that is the last year of Moore’s contract. I figure 2025 is our Super Bowl ready year. If not, major changes should be coming.
