my guess is it's already done but they need the physical to pass.
That's my guess too. The Bears would have to be total idiots to do this for just 9 games and then just "trust" that Sweat will play nice with them on a contract down the line. You don't do this deal unless you have the contract agreement nailed down. Even the Bears are not that incompetent.
(Totally contingent on extending Sweat of course.)
That's the key right there. Maybe they have a behind the scenes contract agreement they are going to sign. If they don't then Sweat has some real leverage over the Bears after 9 games. He is no longer under contract at that point and the Bears will have spent a (very high) 2nd round draft pick for 9-games out of this guy. They could franchise tag him to temporarily get more out of him. But if they want to keep him here then the Bears have given Sweat some real contract leverage over them.
But players don't have any leverage once they get tagged. Its play or not get paid and your contract situation doesn't change. Sweat has all the leverage right now to not sign whatever the Bears offer him. Its going to be multiyear with substantial money upfront. But, there will come a point when the Bears tag him and then its "This or nothing." Players never choose the nothing. Its why the players hate the tag and the owners love it.

I'm just a meatball fan and admit it... but I've got to believe the Bears did not make this move without having an agreement for a multiyear contract - and we'll see that signed. I don't doubt it will be substantial, but it will be what they are comfortable with. And if that's the case then this all makes sense. It does sound like the Bears and Washington have been working on this for awhile and it wasn't some spur of the moment thing. And of course it would have included Sweat in the process.

You can bet Sweat will give 110% effort in these 9 games, but we need to factor in that he’s moving from a strong DL to a very weak DL. I saw today that Bears DL has fewest sacks in the league.
Ironically, both Johnson AND Sweat have a 1/2 share of leverage right now. As long as both remain unsigned, one of them hits the open market. By working together they could max the contract potential of one of them but the other gets tagged. As soon as one of the two signs, the other would be better off signing than getting tagged. Its going to boil down, as always, to the player who realizes that signing the best offer he can get is better than being tagged. Johnson, because of his injury history, would be better off signing as soon as he gets what he thinks is the best offer. If he goes down again this year, he's not going to get anywhere close to what he thinks he is worth.
My hope is that Poles already has a deal worked out with Sweat. If not, then a high second round pick up does seem a lot for 9 games of control in a lost season plus the ability to use the franchise tag to help negotiate a deal next year (which itself comes at the cost of being able to use that on Johnson).
If there is no deal in place Ryan is a purebread idiot. I hope that is NOT the case.

If Johnson doesn't go down and plays as great as he's doing. He's bound to make more money than Sweat. 24 year old vs 27 year old. Big difference. Sweat is bound for one last big contract while Johnson has the chance for two big contracts.

With news coming out, it seems its very possible that Ryan is indeed a total idiot. He is gambling our future to 'keep' his job. Should be fired asap.
Shortly after passing his physical on Wednesday, Sweat said he was letting his agents handle contract negotiations and that he would need to account for multiple factors before agreeing to sign an extension with the Bears.
"I think all that goes into play from financial to the people around me to the players in the building, all that type of stuff like that," Sweat said. "I just got here. I'm still trying to figure out where I'm going to lay my head at tonight."

So as of right now. Zero deals in place. This isn't looking good for Poles.
So it is entirely possible that Poles is trading high second round pick to have Sweat here for 9 games. I hope this is a desperate attempt to save his job. If I were Sweat I’d ask Poles to pay me top dollar, or else I’m going free agency and then he will bid against 30 other teams. Brilliant.
