I get it. He's a good defense player. Eberflus gets another D guy for his defense toy box. Gotta be honest, I'm thinking the offense needs so much work this off season and that 2nd round pick would have been nice for the O. Not saying this wasn't a good move for the team. It probably was if we're going to build a Lovie Smith defense here... build that Lovie D and maybe we can get enough pumped into it that it can be close to what we had when Lovie Smith was here. Trouble is that took away from O resources. Sorry, I've seen this movie before and I know how it ends.
If the offense was already built I'd absolutely LOVE this though.
But now I just watch guys like Whitehair, Patrick, VJ, Borom et. al. do their thing on gamedays... I just can't get too excited about a D guy. LOL, I know I'm nuts for thinking like this but I'm being honest.

He cannot put more FA and early draft capital into the def anymore. Extend Sweat, maybe JJ also, and that's basically it. The O needs serious attention, OC, OG, WR, WR, TE.

+1 I agree. In my heart I know the offense is not going to get those nice things though. They will throw an afterthought at C now that the 2nd round pick is gone. They will no doubt use that top 1st pick for a QB again. Honestly I could see Eberflus getting another D guy with the other remaining first rnd pick. The OL will again be a weak unit on the 2024 team. We will get a JAG for WR/TE/OG and hope to hell Braxton Jones is decent because we will ride with him in '24. Hope like hell Jenkins and Davis can be healthy because the OL depth will probably suck. Again.
Sorry to piss on people's corn flakes. But hey, I'm not being sarcastic when I say I'm happy for them (who love this move). I just can't get too excited about it myself.
Yeah, between Young and Sweat, MS is a little older but more proven and healthier. Young is a few years younger, maybe has a higher potential ceiling, but has big medical risk. CY was a stud as a rookie, then hasn't done anything until just recently this season.
Classic risk/reward conundrum there.
I can't blame Poles for making this move. Obviously, this deal includes a contract extension so everybody calm down. No way it's just about NOW.
Bears need pass rush so fkn bad. Like a man dying of thirst needs a bottle of water.
It a premium position and the upcoming draft class at DE reputedly blows. It makes a lotta sense.
But I'm still gonna pissed at Poles if he lets JJ go. You NEED TO KEEP GOOD YOUNG PLAYERS.
Not exactly rocket science here.
Again depends on what JJ is asking for. Is he worth 18-20(top 5 CB) mil when he's not shown an ability to be healthy? When 18-22 mil pays Sweat top 5-10 DE money?
Could it be, Chic and JJ/agent need to see what other teams would pay him? Again I don't see why the Bears have to trade him, they can FT him for 19mil, he's playing for 19mil. Unless some team blows them away I just don't see them trading JJ.
Sweat at 27 for a 2nd feels like a better option; and I think shows that DC wasn't going to take a 3rd for either of their DE's. I think he fits what Flus wants also, b/c he's obviously not a dedicated pass rusher, he's not getting 10-16 sacks a year, he's getting passes defended and stuffs also. Seems like a guy that can be a total package over just a pass rusher; and possibly means not having to pay him top dollar.
I'm really surprised Washington was willing to move Sweat. Thought for sure Chase Young was the guy they wanted to move and Sweat was their keeper.
Wash picked up Sweat's 5th yr option but declined Young's. That tells you which one they valued more.
I know some on Twitter are trying to make this about Flus but I doubt that's much of a factor. Sweat can play 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB, Bears needed an edge presence regardless, and the upcoming draft looks pretty weak at Edge. If you want to read between the lines on this move, I'd say it tells you these realizations at HH:
A) Yannick N blows and they are seeing why this "sack artist" was still available on the FA market in late August and has already been on 6 different teams in a league that craves pass rushers. B) Poles' developmental draft project (Dom Rob) blows even more. He probably won't even be on the team in 2024. Dude has done nothing to make you think he's got some game coming. C) Poles' FA signings at DE (Walker and Greene) have sucked too.
This move is about 2024 going forward and I don't think it means Flus is "safe". Any HC with a 5-20 record should be very, very unsafe.

JABF, I don't understand--you don't like Velus?
His first name is used as a verb synonymous with screwing up.
As in...."I slid off the road while wasted and totally velus'd my truck."

They did move Young. For a late 3rd round pick. Honestly. I wish the Bears gave up their 3rd round pick for young. We basically gave up a low end 1st round pick for a 27 year old. I take the gamble on Young without risking a high draft pick.

We don't have a late 3rd and that report came out after I typed my post
