I guess that about sums it up for me about this team, errr, group of guys.
But lets not start sniping at each other. We all have our own opinions, and we're all tired of hearing the same thing over and over from various people. Unfortunately, it's really all we have anymore. Just remember that nobody is going to change any one else's mind about the way they believe things. We're not here to show how smart we are or how much more we know than the other guy. Let's try to make it fun here instead of being angry.
That was my point, while I rant about the team I don't recall taking potshots at anybody recently. If I get to that level then it's time to leave the board for a few days.
"Maybe apologists are right and Pace did leave Poles with nothing to work with, so 2022 was not his fault. However, he entered 2023 with a far better basis for improvement than at least some. Most importantly, even when comparing his work to the efforts made to improve other teams that could be called the worst in the league by almost any measure, he has done far less than typical.
When rebuilds are successful in the NFL, they tend to have immediate improvement. At this basic task, Ryan Poles is failing, and he should be out of excuses as to why."
and this comment below:
"I think more than anything else, Poles not using more of his available cap money 2 years in a row is hurting him. And no I don't have the list of impact players that he should have gone after sitting in front of me. But he could have been at least a little more aggressive. You can't just hope you hit on your draft picks. You need to research the FA class and target impact free agents who can improve the team. Some of them may come in and immediately get hurt. You will probably over spend in some cases. I get that you don't want to over pay someone and get burned on a big contract. But there is inherent risk involved in this job and that's one of the reasons why it's not an easy gig and it isn't for everyone."
I just see a feeble attempt by Eberflus to recreate the glory days of Lovie Smith's defenses. But we fired the "real" Lovie Smith due to the fact that model wasn't working anymore in the NFL. The Bears pumped a lot of resources into building the Lovie D and it did get us to a Super Bowl. But the offense wasn't strong enough to win it. And as the league moved more and more to offense, well, it was like trying to compete in a race with an ancient race car. You couldn't compete. Now I see Eberflus working on a "poor mans" Lovie Smith type team.
I'm not saying we shouldn't build a good defense here. You have to have a good one. I'm saying I'd like to see the offense fixed. Too many years of failure here on offense.
I don't like this defense. I don't like watching it. If they did achieve the great heights of a Lovie Smith defense here I don't believe I'd like that either. I'd like to see a great NFL offense here and a decent 3-4 defense. The "cover who" stuff is not exciting me.
This has to be the most deflating season I can recall in quite a while. I honestly didn't expect things to be anywhere near this bad. Other than the running backs and Cairo Santos, I'm struggling to find anything positive to hang on to here...and that includes players, coaches, and front office.
It's truly nauseating to watch this team fail over and over and over and to do so so uncompetitively. How many times have we as fans KNOWN the game was all but over by the early 3rd quarter if not even earlier? I joked in August about being still relevant at Halloween never anticipating that, once again, we would be completely irrelevant by Halloween yet again this year. We have a ridiculously soft schedule this year and still are completely irrelevant once again before the leaves have fallen off the trees.
All I have left is this: If Fields can somehow play well enough the last 8 games to justify the 5th year option, then you can use 2 1st rounders (likely HIGH first rounders) to add MHJr plus another stud prospect (LT?). You gotta fire these clown college coaches and bring in someone who can work collaboratively and constructively with a young QB. Maybe, just maybe, you can turn this train wreck around quickly in 2024-25.
Yeah, I know there's a lot of "ifs" there and I know I'm grasping at straws.
But that's all I got.
I'm out of ideas and out of hope otherwise.
Everything else is complete poo. We are looking at another reset, with a new QB, and years more to get things moving in a positive direction otherwise. Sorry, but it's pretty bleak at this point.
+1 to all of that. I keep thinking I'm okay if I could just see a ray of hope in all of this. For example, if Fields had not stumbled out of the gate looking like 2022 in those early games and Getsy would have looked good at OC... and maybe Brax nailing down the LT position looking like a stud there. Instead it's looking like (yet another) "get out the broom after the season ends" year. Total setback to zero again with new coaches and schemes - and then attempts by the GM (whomever that will be... could be Poles, or not) to find guys to best fit the new schemes. As a fan I feel like that hamster on the exercise wheel... going round and round but never seeing anything new.

I think 4 of his mistakes that (granted in hindsight) that tick me off are: He hired D coach Eberflus to be HC. He signed Lucas Patrick as the C guy to anchor that IOL. He gave our 2nd round draft pick for Claypool. He spent the #71 pick of the draft on Velus Jones. He's done some good things here too. And I get it that hindsight is 20/20. But he probably should have foreseen the OL woes. Whiffing on the C position was a tough one for the team. The OL depth isn't what it should be too.

The only hope I have left is that Fields gets back and plays well the last 2 months of the season. Well enough you feel ok with picking up his 5th year option (which gives you 2 more years of control). Maybe we don't get a #1 or #2 overall pick. Maybe we end up with #3 and #5 or something along those lines.
In that scenario, you keep Fields and pair him with a proper offensive HC who can develop a QB and tailor his scheme to fit JF. That frees up two FRPs to use on MHJr (WR) and Olu (LT). If Fields can't succeed in 2024 with that, then he's clearly a bust and there's no more questions about him "not having enough support".
That's all I can come up with and I freely admit it's a long shot.
Having said the above, I won't be surprised at all that when Fields comes back, he will drop back to pass, hold the ball looking confused for 14.72 seconds, get sacked, and fumble it away. That will end this long shot dream scenario in precisely one play.

The Lions record in 2021 was 3-13-1. The Bears won twice as many games as the Lions in 2021. Now fast-forward two years to today, and look at where these two teams have gone. Lions demonstrated what can be done in just two years from a worse starting record than the Bears. The difference is that Lions have a competent GM and HC, while the Bears do not.

Thing is... If you only have one that sucks, you almost cannot judge the other. And im fairly certain Flus sucks.

I do like what they are doing in Detroit. They are about halfway to where they ultimately need to be. But I think they will get there. They are doing what I would have liked seeing the Bears do. They brought in an offensive head coach. They seem to have built strong lines on both sides of the ball.
They are ascending.
They are clearly not the complete team they ultimately need to be but they seem to be on their way getting there. The Bears? Don't get me started. We will be starting over in 2024. Again.

You okay JABF? you're very down in the dumps today. Take a pill or two and relax man!
