Was just catching up on the latest Hoge & Jahns and CHGO vids.
They were going thru the likely and realistic discussions going on in the Bears FO right now. And I was struck by what they said cuz it reinforced what I have been thinking since Sunday.
They seems to think that 95% chance HH has seen enough to know they're moving on, especially if we get the #1 pick. They made the point, which I think is a good one, that Fields' "bad games" are so bad that can't win with that. I have to agree that Fields' highs are pretty high but his lows are pretty low too.
He's had a lot of games where he barely gets to 100 yards, or even doesn't get there, turns the ball over, and struggles to get over 50% completion rate. Plus he takes extra sacks almost every game because he holds the ball forever and refuses to just throw it away.
It's been pretty much a nosedive downward with him since those 5-6 amazing games he had last year where he ran all over the league.
Wait, I thought you said Geno Smith was the greatest?
I would take Fields over Geno in the Seahawks offense. I don’t recall saying Geno is greatest, but he’s a better QB than some people think (who don’t follow the Seahawks).
+1 I am so impressed with the mileage the Seahawks are getting from Geno Smith. Some folks have mentioned that the Seahawks' offensive coordinator, Shane Waldron, is a pretty sharp guy in his 3rd season there. What do you think of him? Could he be a head coach candidate worth looking at here in Chicago? He is 44 years old, and has coached under some great coaches over the past several years. This isn't a Nagy situation (where Andy Reid is the guy behind the O). Pete Carroll is a D coach, so this guy is a legit O coordinator and not some puppet guy.

What do you think of him, David?
I give Waldron credit for his work with Geno. PFF did a ranking of OCs, and he is #4. Seahawks use wide zone blocking, so it’s not like he would come in and try to change everything to a new scheme. I would definitely like him on the interview list. Of course, if Bears could somehow lure Ben Johnson away from the LIONS, that would be perfect. Feels like mission impossible, though.

Waldron & Johnson are OCs so their teams cannot deny requests to interview either for a HC job. And I bet both would love to become HCs with a new high-draft-pick-QB and possibly MHJr to work with.
If Flutsy gets canned (and they will be), you marry Poles, the new coaching staff, and the new QB all tied together and you give them 3 years to get it together. Please, please do NOT do the stupid stuff you did before by sticking a new QB with a coaching staff you fire after his rookie year.
yes they aren't getting 2 picks, might get a 2nd. Fields has been bad in the NFL, he's been worse than Mitch, and he was picked outside of the top 10, the Bears got nothing for him at all; b/c he wasn't good and everyone knew he was getting cut.
A) Fields is worth a 2nd or so, maybe a 2nd and a 3rd to a team like Atlanta. Remember, Trey Lance, a total bust who played in only 3 games, brought a 4th. Teams get desperate for QBs and they get overdrafted and overvalued as a result. Hell, Josh freakin' Rosen brought a 2nd and he was out of the NFL in like 3 years.
B) Mitch wasn't cut. He became a FA after his contract expired. Once they didn't pick up his 5th year option, everyone knew he was value-less. Fields still has the 5thYO available.
This probably won't happen but it's not the craziest trade scenario I've ever seen either.
A) Why is he worth a 2nd? Just saying it doesn't make it true. He is statistically worse than Mitch, who garnered 0, and wouldn't have garnered anything if they had tried. Lance was a bust, no doubt, but b/c he only played 3 games means there still a "ceiling" he can reach. Fields doesn't have one anymore. The book on Fields is out, and it's basically the same as Mitch, he cannot read a defense, he holds the ball to long, and his best option is to be outside the pocket and make something happen w/his legs.
B) There is no difference between cutting someone and letting them become an FA.
WNML made the only valid point, Pace is in Atl, so they might be willing to do something crazy since he drafted him. But I doubt it will be to give up multiple picks for a guy that has shown next to nothing other then against the worst defenses in the league.
Why it wouldn't happen, ALT GM's would have to be drugged, gagged tied up and held for ransom to make this trade.
Ryan Pace is the guy that traded up to get Fields. He's still there in Atlanta. I've seen bigger stretches for trades. He might tell them "We can fix him for cheap".
That is the only valid point, he might say that, but he's not the GM, he's not the one doing the trade, they aren't going to give up multiple picks for a guy who's only good tape is against the worst defenses in the league. He has no upside, his stats/tape is worse Trubisky's, he's not going to get another guaranteed shot at starting unless a team is truly desparate/insane.
My guess is they get a 3rd. And next year when they decide to draft another qb in the top 5, and again ignore the OL, they'll be trading him for cheap in 3yrs also. Team needs to upgrade OT, OG and OC, and hope they all stay healthy. They also need a WR and TE to help Moore and create defensive problems and easy reads for the new qb. btw none of that is happening, one of those top picks is going DT or DE or WR, then the next picks in the 2nd-3rd will go def.

Well, I can think of reasons why they might prefer another team over the Bears. If this new QB plays like Zach Wilson + Bears defense = new HC suffers in Chicago for 2-3 years and gets fired. It also depends on whether they have any confidence that Poles can do his job.

+1,000 It seems so very basic, like football 101 stuff. Yet the Bears have been incapable of grasping this. Let's hope that the new President/CEO Kevin Warren does understand. He needs to sit Poles down and explain the facts of football-life to him. Poles needs to get an offense built here first - complete with a solid franchise QB. Pull out every stop to make that happen. And of course you need a good defense too. But "Job-1" here in Chicago is to (finally) figure it out as far as how to build offense/QB... the centerpiece of a great team.
