At this point, I would be targeting Ben Johnson, doing some due diligence on him or at least analyzing why Detroit did a 180 after promoting him to OC. Regardless, in today's NFL, I believe you need an HC with a proven offensive background; one that preferably demonstrated they could turn a sow's ear into a silk purse. While having a great OC is important, the issue is that OC becomes very poachable if successful.

I feel if you bring in a young guy to be the HC then you HAVE to balance the age gap and bring in an older type DC. Someone like a Fangio (not him as I am sure he will not come back) who has been there and knows how to run a team and provide the assistance in coaching.

What about hiring the guy himself, Mike Shanahan? He's 71 now but he has interviewed a few times for HC gigs since his last job at Washington. Let him build a quality coaching staff with the idea he could turn the reigns over to one of his guys at some point. He would demand complete control over the team without ANY interference from anyone above him. This isn't one of these young no-experience guys like Trestman, Nagy & Eberflus. This wouldn't be his first rodeo as HC. He's won 3 super bowls and been in 5 super bowls. By the way, he's an Illinois guy, born in Oak Park, and went to school at Franklin Park and Eastern Illinois.

Why hire a clone if you can get the genuine article? And 71 is not old anymore (LOL, ask me how I know).

Pro Football Focus listed Canales as a coach to watch for a potential opening.

I'm actually pretty pumped by the thought of bringing in a solid offense guy. Why we thought a Lovie-clone cover-2 guy (Eberflus) was the way to go, seems in hindsight to have been crazy thinking. But that's water over the dam now, so I'm forward thinking now... all in on getting a good O minded guy.

It will be fascinating to watch what actually happens now.

I think the only people who thought Eberflus was a good choice were the McCasky family and those fans who still believe in DEF first and that you never draft anything but DEF in the first round. Some of them have now come around thankfully and are echoing what many of us have pounded the table for. You still get fans how argue that since Trestman and Nagy were disasters, how could the Bears go OFF-HC again? This despite the Fox-Eberflus reigns of course.

I'd like the Bears to go with a young OFF-HC and a youngish DC, someone not infected with this Cover/Tampa-2 virus. Some will argue you need an experienced ex-HC on the staff somewhere, I don't know.
