SM quoting Schefter as saying it is a double calf strain, one on each leg, WTF? Jenkins now has soft tissue issues.
How the hell can you strain both calfs at the same time?? Butkus?
I gotta be honest...thats a new one for me. I mean I've torn both my achilles...but that was at separate times years apart from one another. Can't say I've ever seen a double calf strain in all my years as both an athlete and a coach...which covers over 3 decades total.

I guess it could have been a worse type injury like his back or knees. Hopefully he heals and can be back by late September and finish out the year. How will this impact his conditioning though - for when he is cleared to practice and play again? Is it a big setback conditioning-wise?

Yeah, good question. If he has to rest them say for 3-4 weeks then he has to go through conditioning again. Hopefully that doesn't take longer than the 2 weeks remaining. And then practice w/ the 1's.

Depends on the grade of the strain. I haven't seen it posted anywhere the severity of it yet. Hopefully they have him doing some conditioning protocols that don't involve the legs as much so that he doesn't lose his total conditioning level. From there its just getting his legs back up to speed. Unfortunately the NFL tends to rush these things a bit.
What specifically are you seeing this preseason that indicates Leatherwood sucks at LG? I'm curious.
As I said, there is a big difference between playing against a bunch of second and third stringers who aren’t even going to make the roster vs. the quality NFL starters who have been beating his ass for two years — both with Raiders and Bears. His problem is that he has slow feet (by NFL standards). That’s why both teams moved him to guard where the issue is camouflaged to some extent. Jenkins has the same problem, but not as bad, which is why he’s the starter and Leatherwood the backup.
Leatherwood still sucks when faced by GOOD players — not second or third level guys in preseason. I hope Jenkins gets back soon. But I agree Poles should look for a long-term solution next year.
His speed, power and technique are so much better than last season. And you are right, he's going against depth players, for the most part right now.
I credit our OL coaches with how they have helped our entire unit (most of them) improve. You and I have watched a lot of years of NFL football. One thing we have seen over the past 50 or 60 years is how OL can often take a few years to develop - some are late bloomers. Leatherwood was a bust with the Raiders when they drafted him 2 seasons ago. He landed here his 2nd season and still looked lost. But he is only 2 seasons in on his NFL career. I suspect he will at least be a very very solid backup - at guard. The Bears didn't spend that 1st round pick on him. That's on the Raiders, and he definitely busted there. That doesn't mean he can't be a solid OL for us with Chris Morgan helping him to unlock his talent. And he clearly has the physical talent to be good at the NFL level.
Us fans get an opinion about how good or bad a young player is, and sometimes close our mind to the possibility that these guys CAN and often DO improve. Smart teams can sometimes capitalize on acquiring a guy who is a bit of a late bloomer. Will Leatherwood do well against guys in the regular season THIS year? I think he will be very good, judging by watching him work - he has crazy good physical gifts of quickness, power and speed. It's pretty cool to watch him get to the second level blocking guys... makes it look easy. I never saw that prior to this year. I think he was totally messed up his rookie year with the Raiders, and then with the Bears his 2nd season. This year could be a good year for him.
Leatherwood had mono when he showed up to the Bears. He wound up losing 35 pounds. I want to see him this year get the first chance at starting in place of Jenkins. If he strikes out, great, I was wrong, next man up. But I don't see the point in making a decision based on what someone did two years ago, when he's got good blocking numbers and tape right now. He's healthy, the Bears are on the hook for his rookie deal, and his arm length is adequate. He's no Braxton Jones, but few are.

Here is a discussion on YT with Mason West. This Nomad Network is just a bunch of die-hard Bears fans and their structure is pretty informal.
West is a Bears fan who happens to be a Doctor of Physical Therapy. He is pretty active on X/twitter.
On this video, he speculates that Jenkins could have injured both calves by repeated heavy workouts in the two joint practices in Indianapolis. And that it didn't have to be a freak single occurrence injury. I'd be interested to see what butkus3595 thinks about this guy.

I mean its certainly possible...its just weird he finished those practices with no issues and then was interviewed after the last one and talked about how good he felt...and then boom...double calf strain. I still haven't seen anything out there that indicates what grade strain they are...has anyone else?
West seems pretty knowledgeable. He was on the original podcast that Nick Moreano and Will DeWitt had before they were acquired by CHGO.
