More and more I'm thinking Chris Morgan, our OL coach is a winner hire. I think he's developing talent with these young guys. I see players improving and ascending.
He's been an NFL OL coach for 15 years - and in his 2nd year here. We are seeing our OL players getting better. Brax looks better (and he was good last season), Jenkins was looking better (and he was very good last year... but playing his best at a new position this year), Whitehair seems solid at C (he struggled last year at LG... glad they moved him to C). Don't know about Nate Davis... he's been hurt. Too early to tell about Darnell Wright, so we'll wait and see about him. But I figure he'll be a solid RT.
The depth OL players look better than I can remember. It will be interesting to watch and see how many OL the Bears carry on the 53 roster. But my gut feeling is that if we have players miss some time due to injury this year, well, the world isn't going to end - due to the depth players looking solid. And it's important to understand that young OL players CAN ascend. I think that is probably more true for OL than any other position in football (TE is another position). Just writing off a young player as a failed OL in the first couple of years of their career can be a mistake. I have really enjoyed watching the players in this scheme too. The OL we have right now are great fits for this scheme... you see them regularly getting to the next level to execute great blocking. Carter, Borom, Kramer, Leatherwood look a lot better than last year. Young guys ascending and a good fit for this offense/scheme. We haven't seen much of Brax, Whitehair and Wright in the PS games, but I'll bet all three are solid this year if they stay healthy. Jenkins is a stud. But yeah, if he can't stay healthy that's a problem. If he can't go tho - we are still going to be pretty good on the OL this season I think.
One other thing. No offensive line is going to keep a QB from some level of sacks/hits/pressure. Not in today's NFL with the defenses as good as they are. You just hope that the blocking can give you a reasonable level of protection. Key word there is "reasonable" level. And it's not just the OL that has to provide that blocking. I do like how the Bears have everyone participating in the blocking schemes... you see the TE's, RB's and even the WR's executing pretty well overall in this offense this year. I just hope it carries over to the regular season.
