They won't FT him and they may not be able to Keep him after next year. They will accept a Price that is offered before they lose him for nothing. I don't see them cutting Brady that way... Jimmy won't get traded for 2 1sts. They can't demand that and they are losing him soon if they don't trade him or make him the starter.
They can re sign him. Brady is 40, how much longer do you think he plans on playing? It sounds like Jimmy G is their heir apparent. So it's not FT or let walk for nothing.

My guess would be that if Belichick wan't sure that Garropolo wasn't able the handle it, we would have seen the Pat's get another QB by this time.

they have Cap Problems and signing him will end up as Problem. I'm sure that Jimmy will get traded this offseason and that the Price won't be 2 1sts. I expect a later 1st or 2 2nds and this seems fair.
Don't Forget, they just drafted the next heir apparent for Brady.

And for the four games he's played this year, Garoppolo has completed about 68% of his passes with 5TDs and 0 Ints for a QB rating of 108.5 ... a small sample for sure but nice numbers.
Sorry I don't trust any QB coming out of NE. Especially one that has only played a few games. The Patriots are too consistently good a team and are too well coached for me to trust that Jimmy G will perform at the same level in a less accomplished organization. Remember Matt Cassel? He went a 11-5 with the Pats and has never come near that level of play ever again.
It's like when teams pay a bunch of money to get a WR from a team with a really good QB and then are surprised when the WR doesn't perform nearly to that level when he's being thrown to by a less skilled QB.
Jimmy may be the real deal but that is massive gamble to take. More so when you have to throw picks into the deal. Houston, for example, is unlikely to get what they paid for Osweiler but at the least they didn't have to deal any picks to get him.

Their cap is tight now, but not next year and there is no issues in 2018. Not sure where you think their cap issues are. In the next two years they are looking better then the Bears; does that mean the Bears cannot sign him?

That's actually much closer to the truth than any insistence they will get two 1st for him regardless of what they ask for. That's the cost of a FT player and he's not. So NE has some decisions to make coming up involving him and Brady.
Paying him anywhere near a top starters level top be a #2 isn't reasonable to expect but will Brady step down? He claims he'll keep playing as long as he can and that may run headlong into what to do with Garoppolo.
Discussions of what Jimmy G may be worth in the next off-season (or at the end of his contract 2018) will be based on what the QB market is at that point in time.
What Cutler was worth to the bears 7 or 8 years ago is irrelevant. What Osweiler was worth last off-season to the Texans is irrelevant. Current market value for anyone is what they are worth at that moment. While what has happened in the past can and does influence the current market for anything, the past is not deterministic. It does not guarantee that the value for Cutler or Jimmy G will be a specific amount, or guarantee that it ill be be above a certain amount.
If Belichick is willing to trade Jimmy G at the end of the season, he will drive as hard a bargain as he possibly can for him. It will include high draft choices. He may be willing to part with Garroppolo if it guarantees him a pick where he will likely get someone like Watson, Kizer, Kaaya, Rudolf, etc. We do not know how much he values Garroppolo, or how much he may like a specific QB prospect in the 2017 draft. If Belichick thinks Jimmy G is the long term answer to the Patriot's QB situation, the price will be very very high. High enough to guarantee him a franchise QB ... at the very minimum.
The asking price will be high yes but teams will be watching to see what drama with Brady unfolds. Will he step aside or step down because as ruthless as Belicheat can get it's still pretty tough to see Brady ever being traded. Will Brady force their hand relative to Garoppolo?
If I was NE I wouldn't be looking to trade Garoppolo either since he appears to be their eventual solution to the post Brady era so I think you're correct when you say there's little likelihood they'll trade him now when they still have another year to let the hand play out.
Who can actually say what he's worth? Two firsts is what you pay for a franchise level player and I don't think Garoppolo has enough of a track record for them to get that no matter what's being said. So I reject that as being anywhere near what I would offer for starters and would only go that high if other picks and/or players were also in the deal to balance it out. It could be a 1st and a swap of 1sts or a two 1sts for JG and a second in return. Who knows?
So for anyone to call any compensation crazy without knowing the whole deal is equally crazy. Until some deals are actually on the table it's all speculation but that would not stop me from pursuing talks with NE about him. If you don't ask you don't get.
