I wouldn’t be shocked if he went for more defense at #9, but he has to know that drafting Paris Johnson is the safer pick. It would be inexcusable to have the #1 pick and come out of it without Anderson/Carter or a blue chip starting RT, especially after getting no RT in FA. Yeah, getting Moore is nice, but there were other ways to get another good WR for Fields.
Anyway, I stand by my statement that he’s locked into drafting Paris Johnson at #9. We’ll see.
I am 100% certain that he will either draft who he wants or trade if he wants. It doesn't matter what you or I want him to do.
Wait... you telling us we can't just write Larry Mayer and influence Poles?
Would really like to see Johnson and 1 of Mooney/Kmet being extended this summer, would make me feel much better. Not great to have both Mooney and Claypool FAs, also CBs are rather unknown... need continuity
I can honestly see them not extending Mooney and taking a shot at getting Harrison in the 2024 draft.
Why not both? I think it may all depend upon his asking price and Poles valuation of him. By now he more than likely has a range in mind for all three players he may want to offer and extension to. There's also Claypool to consider as well.
If Poles can manage to keep both under affordable deals using his extra 2023 cap to somewhat front load a deal it should give him some flexibility in 2024. Either player should be able to be trade if that makes sense provided their contract cost isn't too prohibitive.
I believe it makes more sense to either lock up who you have provided it can be done within their value range or allow them to risk playing out their rookie deals without an extension. That alone provides Poles with some leverage. We also have no idea now as to whether or not we'll have any shot at Harrison so Poles shouldn't count on him.

Among the WRs, I'd let Claypool play out this year but would try to lock up Mooney this summer. He's coming off a down year so ay be able to get him at a discount. OTOH, If I were his agent, I'd tell him to turn down any offer and bet on himself to get a better contract next year.
Depends on whether or not he wants to roll the dice.

OK mp but if it's also OK let me play the devil's advocate here too.
Of the two Claypool is a better fit for the type of WR with both size, speed and the ability to block for the run game that we would like to feature than Mooney. Poles also spent what's now a very high draft pick for Claypool he must somehow justify. Mooney was a Day 3 pick of the previous GM coming off ankle surgery who is a much smaller receiver albeit a willing downfield blocker. Both have similar receiving stats.
Based solely on this why would Poles be more likely to risk losing Claypool in 2024 FA than Mooney?

Exactly. While I can understand the desire to keep both Claypool and Mooney, I don’t see Poles committing the resources for both.
Now with my track record for predicting what’ll happen, Poles will do the exact opposite of what I’m thinking….😂😂😂😂

It's a fair point, I agree. But so far Mooney has been the better player ON THE BEARS.
Maybe he will let them both both play for a contract this yr and try to sign the best performer next offseason. You risk losing both that way though.

It all comes down to cost and the structure of their deals. If Poles is clever enough he can keep both and make it work to his advantage. Ok, how he asks? (assumptive of me eh?) LOL
He has cash to spend. Cash he needs to spend as well. So use that as a way to front load team friendly deals for both. Deals that make it possible to trade either of them in 2024 if it makes sense. Teams who need to back load deal need to offer more based solely on the time value of money and risk. Theoretically front loaded deals can be cut for less because the player is taking less risk.
Of course another option is to offer an extension to neither this summer and wait to see how they perform during the season then make the decision. It's hard to see now that we have Moore as a #1 why either deal would be more costly later on than this summer. So, he can make them offers this summer and hold to it if they balk.

True, but teams don't pay for past performance. They pay based on current value and projected future performance. As I posted above Poles does have some options a to how he wants to play this.
