You're making statements without providing a whole lot of proof of anything. What exactly are you basing your opinion on "that there are some fantastic route runners in the NFL but Mooney ain't one of them"? Have you watched and graded out EVERY receiver in the NFL? What qualifications do you have as an analyst of route running? What exactly makes one a good route runner in your opinion?
The tall, fast guys we currently have aren't very good. I hope thats not a news flash for you. I mean, you're right though...we probably shouldn't add a guy like Tee Higgins because we already have big, fast guys. Do you really actually believe that? There are different ways to improve, and the only one's that aren't better are the one's that don't involve better overall players.
If you look at it from a movement perspective, QB's perform movement most similar to those in the 3 cone on a more regular basis. Same with pass rushers. They've gotten rep after rep on it. Receivers literally never make movements like that and the one movement they do make in the 3 cone they utilize totally different footwork to do it. Here, this is some film of your boy from the senior bowl, he's running an in route, but the foot work would be the same for an out route:
At no point in time does he ever do anything remotely close to the things one would do in the 3 cone....ever. He comes to his base, he performs a wide base cross over, and they he rolls into a 90 degree cut. Its great route running, its great agility...but none of those things are measured or performed in the 3 cone. Hell...I'd argue very strongly, and correctly that the 3 cone doesn't measure agility in the slightest.
