Goodall is only age 63, so he’s probably staying in the job, and there are other guys besides Warren qualified for the job. He’ll be here long enough to win a Super Bowl.
I think you’re right about Poles and his approach. If he trades for a WR1 (D-Hop, Adams, Evans), it will probably be Warren’s decision. That’s the first thing I’m waiting to see. That would be Warren putting his money where his mouth is, as he says he’s a big fan of Fields. And, as Ric always complains, Poles did not make supporting Field’s with OL and WR his top priority in the 2022 draft. On that subject, I will also be watching to see how aggressively Poles goes after getting a WR in the second round this year.
I'm watching what they do with the OL. Whitehair looks done as a good OL. Mustipher and Patrick are pitiful. Jenkins looks like he could be made of glass. And RT? Nobody home there at all (Borom is not it). And Braxton Jones looks like he can be better for '23 if he gets stronger. That is 1 starter that is a sure thing (assuming B.Jones does get it done in the weight room... and I think he will).
The OL and DL are everything in this draft. If they fail to fix both, then it will be a very rough year.
So you’re okay with OL in second round. What if there is no WR or OL in second round? And no trade for WR1 (D-Hop, etc.)? I believe he’s going to prioritize DL over OL in draft, because it’s the greater need. The OL is bad in the interior, but the DL is much worse — and from end to end. Nevertheless, I am with you on the “support Fields” mandate. I want Poles to trade for WR1 if possible, and draft WR at #35. Then spend the $100 million on both the OL and DL.
It sounds like his history has been to listen well and respect the opinions of those who report to him, but in the end he is the chief executive officer - he has been hired to be responsible for all operations of the Bears multi-billion dollar sports franchise. It sounds to me (from listening to Poles since he arrived here, and listening to Warren yesterday) that these two guys are in lockstep with a long term approach to building a team that can sustain winning here. The nuts and bolts of this will probably be avoiding quick fix personnel decisions in favor of a longer ROI in players. We have seen this in spades from Poles already. The youth movement. Building through the draft vs old veterans nearing the end of their shelf life. Don't spend money like Pace did that mortgaged our future. The vision seems to be the same for these two. And when these two do disagree (and they will at times) the exec rules. Not the coaches or Poles. My only worry with this guy is that he is so over-qualified for this job that I wonder if we can keep him here for the long-haul. I could definitely see this guy as a commissioner of the NFL making the big bucks (Goodell makes $63.9 million dollars a year). This guy has the chops to do that job at some point.

Fixed it for you.
The 2021 secondary was a dumpster fire and he went BPA in round 2. There simply wasn't the resources to upgrade all the holes last offseason.

You may or may not recall, but I fully supported drafting Gordon and Brisker. He didn’t have to do that. There were plenty of people around here who wanted him to draft OL and WR to “support Fields” as #1 priority in 2022 and postpone fixing the secondary some other way. JABF still wants to prioritize offense in 2023, and I think Ric does, too.

With the resources Poles has this year with a trade down, he will be able to seriously upgrade OL, DL and WR units. He won't fix everything he sure should be able to put a serious upgrade in place in all 3 areas. And it shouldn't be an all or nothing thing where one unit gets it all. Yes, I hope the offense gets more attention this year to protect the #1 asset the franchise has right now, Fields.

Right, and my point is that there were several others besides you who wanted prior to the 2022 draft for Poles to “support Fields” with those first two picks rather than take defensive backs. I know my memory is not great at my age, but not that bad.

I get that in the theoretical sense. But....
The 2021 secondary was also awful and a huge need. Even Eddie Jackson had regressed in 2020-21.
The picks he did make in the 2nd (Gordon and Brisker) are both starters for 2023 and future building blocks.
The only OL ("Fields support") that made sense was that Seattle guy whose name I forgot. Braxton Jones outplayed him as a 5th round pick so no loss.
The only WR ("Fields support") that made sense was Pickens and he had both injury and character concerns.
For the 734th time....are we done beating this dead horse now?

sad to say, but until a trade, draft, or signing is made, all we have right now are dead horses.
I think the frustrating part of this period between now and FA & is that the factors involved with FA and the draft are mostly "unknowns" in the equation. We don't know who will ultimately reach FA. Just because contracts are running out doesn't mean the teams will let these guys walk. Some will. Others won't. And we have zero clue as to what our draft picks will finally be after the trade-dust settles. Even if Poles does trade down we don't know who that will be with and what we will get from them. It is all a HUGE unknown right now. The difference between the #1 overall pick and the various trade-down scenarios is vast. And we don't even have a clue as to what we are going to draft at this point. Not exactly, due to FA filling some needs before the draft. There are more moving parts to this than we usually have.
So I figure we can just have fun spit balling it all. But we have pretty much no clue as to what is really going to happen. LOL, and the sports media people have no clue too. I read one yesterday that said basically there would not be two trade downs by the Bears. Really? How does he KNOW that at this point? Poles is quite capable of anything at this point. It will be fascinating to watch though. Quite possibly this will be THE most pivotal off-season in Bears history. That may be hyperbole but maybe not. We finally have our franchise QB in place, and also have an incredible level of resources to bring in roster talent (both on O and D). I can't imagine what the team will look like going into the 2023 season. It could be an awesome one if (the elephant in the room if) Poles, the coaches and the scouts can be successful identifying the best talent for the team.
