I think Poles is gonna throw a lotta money at this guy. I'm expecting a deal at ~ $18m AAV
I'm fine with that. My first thought is that (once again) we see a non-first round drafted guy highly coveted in FA. He was a 3rd round pick. Every year (for years now) I look up where these big-payday guys were drafted out of college. So many of them are mid to later round guys.
Poles needs to FIND these guys for the Bears in the draft. Not saying we shouldn't sign this guy. I bet he'd be a huge help. And I get it, that it is not easy evaluating talent in the draft. But my hope is that Poles, Cunningham & the scouts can find these kind of guys. If he can do that at a fairly high percentage of success, then that will be our ticket to being relevant in the NFL again.

Bingo and if we take Poles at his word that's precisely what he intends to do. Dre'mont Jones rookie contract was for $4.15 mil/4 years. That's roughly 25% of what he's now getting for one year. Can't afford too many of those deals when we have to start paying current MV for our QB.
If Fields can become who we believe he can become pretty soon we're paying him $40 mil a year or more and we'll really need to keep finding mid round picks we can depend on as starters. Pace was always building his roster for the here and now. Poles is building a sustainable situation for the future. I like his way better.

+1,000 to that.
And I totally understand that even the best GMs make a percentage of mistakes. But if Poles can keep the failures to a low percentage then that would be what this franchise hasn't had in many years... probably since the Jim Finks tenure here.
I like hearing how the Bears have finally built this solid support structure. Ted Phillips is out now. The Bears have a stellar presidennt in Kevin Warren. Poles was allowed to bring in a brilliant (soon to be GM for somebody) Ian Cunningham. Sounds like Poles has built a rock solid scouting department. He has invested in a solid analytics department. In 3 years the Bears will be playing in one of the elite stadiums in the nation. Book that one because it will happen... it makes money sense to do it that way and the McCaskeys are going to kick this franchise value to an even higher level.
I love your statement there, Paul, "Pace was always building his roster for the here and now. Poles is building a sustainable situation for the future. I like his way better." This is a good time to be a Bears fan. All the good stuff is ahead for us long-suffering fans.

What have I (and others) been saying for nearly a decade Dave. At least half the Bears issues with being a second class team began at the top with a second class CEO/President and an Owner neither of whom were top football guys. The McCaskey's refused to replace Teddy Bears and bring in a top NFL talent to replace him was IMHO at the root of most of their problems. They didn't like losing but no matter how much they spent they didn't know how to win. That's all changed.
Warren takes over as President next month and while his main thrust will be towards successfully developing Arlington and getting a new stadium built he's also there to hold Poles accountable as the GM and has the previous experience to do it. Teddy and GMC are out of football ops entirely now. Owners own and now that's all the McCaskey's need to do. A consistently winning football team and a new stadium will make the Bears one of the NFL's most valuable franchises.
With Brax and Tev on the left side, the run blocking should be epic good. Let's hope both can improve as pass blockers too (and I believe both can). I have a feeling the Bears have Whitehair as the "floor" for C but that could change in this draft depending upon how it shakes out for the Bears at C there. The last big piece is that RT position now.
