The moral of this story is if a guy is a BPA at a position you need to fill.....draft him.
+1 That's what I am so hoping happens here. And whomever Poles believes is that best guy available, hey, I trust his judgement. Could be Skor or one of the other guys. I'll be a mighty happy camper if he grabs one of these guys.
At the moment I believe Poles has negotiated himself into a perfect spot. He'll have his pick of some very talented players at #9 and he can now sit back and auction that pick to see what offers he can get. Either he gets what he's after of he stays at #9 and gets a top shelf player at his position.
If he trades back I also believe that much like the trade with Carolina it will be on his terms or not at all. He's well aware of where he can draft other talent to fill even more needs so he can structure his counters around that possibly getting two high level starters instead of one.
Once you look more at the grading of some positions you find that one player who stands out above the rest then several all grouped around a very similar grade. I'm sure Poles sees players who would be available after pick #9 he'd be happy to draft as well. A trade back with Pitt may get him there.
Not solely a Tweet but rather sourced from both Tweets and other comment there's a late rumor now that Poles will draft Skoronski with the intention of starting him at LG. He will try to trade Teven Jenkins who was not one of his own picks. I don't buy it but a case can be made by connecting some dots.
In addition to Jenkins not fitting the profile ideal for a zone scheme OL he's been moved from LT to RT. Then from RT to RG. And now from RG to LG post Nate Davis signing. Since Jenkins had already established his spot at RG in 2022 it's more puzzling the Bears would ask him to move to LG especially since he played RT in college. There's also his injury history.
If Poles and OL Coach Chris Morgan don't fully believe in Jenkins future as a Bear OG I could see a move like this a much of a current stretch as it is. Unless they try Jenkins at RT again I don't see Skoronski not starting over him at LG. I guess we're gonna have to wait 'til well after the draft to find out but it's not a completely off the wall idea.

If that happens, maybe they are not sold on Jenkins' staying healthy. And he seemed a bit off emotionally at times too.

Well he did go into the draft carrying a 1st round grade yet slipped to us in round two. There has to be a reason for that. His back issues may have been it or it may even have been something more. What ticks a box for me is having to move to LG when we sign a vet RG. If Morgan believed RG belonged to Jenkins more typically Davis would've been asked to move to LG. We did just the opposite.
It's no more than reading tea leaves but given that move and Jenkins not having ever played a full season without injury I'd wonder just how sold on him they are longer term. This year may not be the ideal time to move on but his salary is only $1.42 mil and in 2024 $1.8 mil which could make him attractive trade bait for someone.

And if Jenkins does have some or all of these issues, then other teams will know. So I wonder if he has much trade value. He may not have significant value to other teams. But you're right. It's just reading tea leaves. The guy may not have any of these issues, and will be healthy and solid for the Bears for years to come.

We'll have some answers soon enough. Today's rumor has Poles swapping with Pitt; #9 for #17, #49 and a 2024 pick as high as a 2nd rounder. Then Poles takes RT Darnell Wright who handled some fierce competitors very well at Tennessee.
If Poles and Morgan are good with Jones and Jenkins longer term as LT and LG and as much as I prefer Skoronski I could live with that too. Both Dane Brugler and the NFL grading by Lance Zierlein pretty much put PJJ, Jones, and Wright in the same box talent wise. PJJ and Jones only get a higher ranking because they're LT.
This is where it's at. By now most teams will have game planned out the higher likelihoods of how the draft will break prior to their pick and also have had talks with teams wanting to trade up to get a specific player provided he's there at #9. It doesn't necessarily have to be a QB either. If it's a player they must have they'll trade.
I'll add to the above by saying this may not be a bad way to go at all if Poles feels he can benefit by adding another pick in round two. We keep hearing the strength of this draft is between pick #20 and #50. If that's true it would give Poles 3 picks roughly within that range at #17, #49, and #53 along with another 2nd and top 3rd and 4th round picks he could use to move up even more if he wanted to.
Pick #103 and #61 could possibly move him up enough for another top 50 pick or close to it. He could conceivably have #49, #51 or #52, and #53 while still keeping #64. That should allow him to shop some guys who've fallen a bit farther than expected in round two and at the top of round three. I don't disagree that it's unwise to pass up blue ranked talent but as a pure RT it's possible Wright is that or at least a "purple" tweener between blue and red.
What's most attractive about this is the values available in round two and at #64. This a good range for DL and OC who can also provide immediate help and a CB or two. The more I read about him the more I believe Poles will remain very disciplined and value oriented this year as well.
Yup, annoying as both asshats were they pretty much ruled the NFCN for 3 decades. When has that ever happened before? Packer fans will need to get more accustomed to living in the same reality the rest of us have been in. No more Aaron Rodgers and the extra protection he got. The playing field is a bit more level now.
