I wanna see Fields have some scripted plays where he takes a 5-step drop, plants his back foot on step #5, and then immediately fires the ball with authority. No thinking allowed.
I saw a bunch of times yesterday where he had an open target at the end of the drop but Fields hesitated and then the opportunity was lost.
He looks really tentative and un-confident out there. Like he doesn't know what he is seeing or doesn't trust himself. I'm really hoping its just an internal crisis of confidence and resolve rather than a mental block cuz he can't process the field well.
If it's the latter, he's just Mitch 2.0 and he's not gonna become the guy.

+1 I was thinking something very similar to what you are pointing out. I can't help but wonder if he is just trying too hard and hesitating - and that brief moment of lag time is making him slow to pull the trigger. JT Sullivan critiqued him that way too... that he's not pulling the trigger and just has to let it rip on plays.
Fields seems like a guy who puts a lot of pressure on himself. We read about the crazy work-ethic. And we hear the guy talk, that sure sounds like he's wired to be that kind of guy. Like a guy who can try too hard... to the point he is incapable of just reacting and being fluid on reps. But, If that is his problem then that should be fixable. The coaches will certainly see this as his problem and help him to overcome it. Don't over-think it.
I don't see how he can progress if he isn't trusted or given the opportunity to do so. We basically will never know anymore than we already do. This is either a rebuild year and therefore let him loose, or they think they can go for the playoffs and that's pointless if you don't trust your QB.
Look at these stats below. Fields is surrounding by players who have played in two or less games.
These guys have played less than Fields but thrown a similar amount in two games. If they don't trust Fields to throw the ball, then how is he going to improve? If he isn't your man then what's the plan? I would like someone to actually ask Poles or Eberflus their thoughts on it.
I agree with this. Let him loose. What is the worst that will happen? We lose a tonne of games and get high draft picks?

One play that really caught my attention was right after the 2 minute warning in the 4th quarter.
3rd and 16 and Getsy calls a screen pass to Herbert. Now, I don't know if that's because Getsy is a rookie OC and didn't know any better or he just didn't trust Fields to go deep. But I turned to my brother and said wtf?!

Before half was telling too. 45 secs on our 30ish and all 3 timeouts. Perfect time to get a few chunk plays against a cover 2 D or even prevent that Lovie would've been playing.

Guys, it's utterly obvious that the coaching stuff simply doesn't trust Fields right now.
3rd and 16 I understand playing it safe. Running on 3rd and 6 and not calling TO when you have 3 of them and 1st down with time on the clock before halftime, screams that THEY DON'T TRUST HIM. They're trying to squeeze out Ws any way they can and they did--thanks to Herbert and a few good plays on D, we barely beat the worst team in the NFL at home despite awful QB play.
I really hope they and Justin figure some things out. He's pretty much the worst starting QB in the league right now so gotta turn things around big time here over the next 14 games.

I do wonder if they can shorten the field for him. Only give him half the field to read on plays. Defenses will adapt to it, but I think it will help him if he can be helped that is.
