Thats what bothers me, b/c the OL isn't anywhere near fixed, they can run block, but their pass pro is ass, and a new QB will look just like Fields and Mitch if they draft one and don't put real resources to fix the OL and the WR position. Fix the issues in front of the qb before you try and fix the QB, or you end up ruining the qb.
Just got back from the game.
Sorry, I gotta disagree with you. The OL was fine today in pass pro. It really hasn't been bad all season.
Justin Fields missed a whole bunch of open throws today (from the "All-22" view in the stands). By "missed", I mean was inaccurate, way late with the ball, and didn't even see open receivers.
Justin Fields was awful today. I'm done with benefits of the doubt with him. He's gotta step things up dramatically the next 14 games or Poles needs to get a Plan B together.
Justin Fields today was outplayed today--outplayed by a large margin--by Davis freakin' Mills.
To his credit (for what it's worth) Justin Fields knows he is playing bad... in his own words "I played like trash" today. I'm wondering if he can turn it around. The only way to know for sure is to just let the season play out and see what happens with him. He has to show some evidence of being the guy this season. He doesn't have to do a miracle turnaround, but rather just show SOME evidence of being a franchise QB. Something.
The OL is certainly serviceable for any decent qb. The qb is just bad and no amount of additional talent is going to make him good. Fields has to play better or he has no future in this league.
Serviceable for what? the run; we agree, serviceable, but you don't put young qb's w/no weapons behind a serviceable run blocking OL, for pass pro, they are ass.
And I'm not defending Fields, he has his own issues and doesn't help the OL; just like Cutler, he spends his few sec's down there looking for a big play while missing multiple smaller plays.
Sorry, man, you're barking up the wrong tree here.
The OL has been adequate. In fact, it's actually been a pleasant surprise so far this season. Fields' pass pro today was very reasonable.

He just plain SUCKED ASS
Both things can be true,
This idea he's holding onto the ball to long, is a big exaggeration, he's .54 sec's slower then Tom Brady who leads the league. He is at the bottom, but he's there w/D Jones and Llamar Jackson and Marriota at just over 3 secs. Brady is 2.4, the next 5 are 2.42(Rush) and 2.5-2.6 if Fields gets the ball out .5 secs he isn't helping the OL that much.
He is holding the ball to long and processing to long, but the WR's aren't great and the OL isn't great either. the OL has given up the 5th most sacks, and no other qb that has been sacked more has less then 100 attempts; Fields has 45. That's a sack every 4.5 drop backs; the other qb's w/more sacks the OL are giving up 1 sack every 10+ drop backs.
The OL has not been serviceable, unless you are talking about run blocking, then they've been really damn good. You really think .5 sec's is the difference between 10 sacks and 4 1/2 to get him more in line w/the rest of those qb's? I'm calling bs if you are.

He's not seeing the field well or understanding what he's seeing. I can tell you for certain today that he had open receivers and adequate time on multiple dropbacks and either didn't see it, didn't recognize it, held the ball too long, or just plain misfired the pass.
The OL isn't the problem. Justin Fields is. No way your OC takes a knee with 45 secs before half on 1st down with 3 TOs. That screams "we don't trust our QB and he's struggling badly".

I expected Fields to have rough games this season. Games like today. But I also expected to see him make progress with things you could legit point at and say he is improving. Even if it is a "two steps forward and one step back" type of thing. I just hoped to see him moving in the right direction. It is a small sample size so far this season. It is 3 games. So maybe he settles down and does improve. At least show a spark of potential.
My personal expectation for this season was very low. And I'm trying not to do the chicken little thing (we are 2-1), but clearly Fields needs to be better than what we are seeing.
I think all of us here are (pretty much) on the same page. Watch the entire season and then make a decision based on the evidence - on the entire season... the entire body-of-work. Not making excuses but just based on the evidence. I think that WILL happen. But between now and the end of the season you want to see that needle moving in the right direction.

I wish it was just a "rough game". We could all understand and forgive a rough game.
It's worse than that, I'm afraid. He's looking more and more like Mitch did when doubts crept in on him--poor vision, poor pocket awareness, poor processing, lack of comfort and confidence out there--we have seen this movie before.
He hasn't REgressed because he hasn't PROgressed yet at all.

I'm not saying you are wrong; but we don't know what he's supposed to be looking at.

I don't see how he can progress if he isn't trusted or given the opportunity to do so. We basically will never know anymore than we already do. This is either a rebuild year and therefore let him loose, or they think they can go for the playoffs and that's pointless if you don't trust your QB.
Look at these stats below. Fields is surrounding by players who have played in two or less games.
These guys have played less than Fields but thrown a similar amount in two games. If they don't trust Fields to throw the ball, then how is he going to improve? If he isn't your man then what's the plan? I would like someone to actually ask Poles or Eberflus their thoughts on it.

Do the "attempts" include all the pass plays or just the ones where he actually got the pass off? Because there have been quite a few called pass plays where he spent a few seconds doing his "deer in headlights" impression then went for either a sack or scramble!

He's had 10 sacks, but even then, two of those yesterday were his OL tripping him up. So you can't start breaking it down into sacks and scrambles because every QB scrambles at some point and they are classed as runs only. You could argue that many scrambles show awareness to escape the sack.
I'm talking about the Bears not really trying to see if Fields is the future or if he's progressing. With my eyes I can see he is not at the moment, what I'm asking is are the Bears actually helping him to progress because they're not really giving him many attempts to be a QB. They obviously don't trust him or think the running game is there only offensive weapon.
