I suspect Herbert was drafted in preparation for Monty leaving. Monty was a 3rd round pick. Herbert was a 6th round pick. Cohen a 4th round pick. It's not that tough to get a serviceable RB.

That said, I do believe Monty is above average. Again, I factor in the fact he's not had much of an OL here and basically made a lot of his yards on his own - in spite of a poor OL. Not saying he's elite. But he is better than average. Call him a solid 2nd-tier RB talent.

That’s a tough one for me. I really like Montgomery. He’s certainly not elite, but I think he’s been pretty good considering the shaky line in front of him. And he seems to have grown into his role as a leader on offense. There’s a reason he was singled out by the Bears (along with Roquan) for his play this year. He was all in on every play and that’s the type of guy you generally like to keep around if possible. I would understand if they let him go but would prefer to see him stick around if possible. He does seem to check all the marks when it comes to H.I.T.S. 😉

I suspect Montgomery will come into the year as the starter, but Herbert will eat more and more into his carries making Monty unnecessary to resign. He'll be here bc a proven 3down RB is needed on the roster and is a good locker room guy.

And if the Bears fulfill Poles promise to fix the OL then I think Monty will be pretty amazing to watch this year. Last year it looked to me like Jason Peters & Whitehair were solid run blocking on that left side. I assume Peters is a goner this year. But if Jenkins, or whomever the LT is this season, can be solid with Whitehair, then maybe the other 3 OL positions can be good. I don't know if Borom can be the guy at RT but I think he looked promising. I don't think James Daniels is under contract, but I would like to see him at C and the Bears bring in a stud G for the RG position. If Daniels is not back then the Bears need a good replacement for him too. I don't think Mustipher is a starter quality OL.

I think it is tough to go off stats alone with Monty because it was Nagy's tendency to use him to set up his failed passing game. I believe he was used as inefficient as he could have been. I remember many games Monty was in a groove and then Nagy would pull the plug on him.
I am glad we dont have to watch that again. It was maddening to see omething working on O & then not see it for an entire half. Makes me question did Nagy do this with ARob the entire season?

Ok, this idea of calculating run yards over expectation by looking at the position of all 22 players, and figuring out what an average running back will do sounds ridiculous.

Like, how can they calculate this stat and it actually mean something? What is their "average" baseline runningback? How can they know what all 22 players are supposed to be doing on a given play besides guessing?

I'm not advocating locking up Monty long term. I don't think the rebuild calendar supports having a RB in his second contract while trying to implement a new coaching tree and fix what Nagy may have done to Fields. But I do not give much credence to this "new" stat.
