I've been a Baylor fan for a long time. They are my home town college team. The coach that got canned at the end of the 2015 season (Art Briles) is a real genius in the spread offense. Baylor has been a top 10 of not a top 5 offense in college ball for that last 10 or so years.
You have to be careful with the passing stats of Baylor QBs though. Briles is so good at setting up formations with unusual options so the QB is prepped with a limited number of reads (2 or 3 at most).
If the primary option is covered by the defensive formation, the first alternative is typically devastating to that defensive formation. So if the QB goes to the backup and executes it correctly, the QB looks like a world beater when in fact it is the Briles offense enabling the QB.
You have to remember that Briles made RG3 a Heismann QB. And how did RG3 work out in the NFL?
Agreed. That is always the issue with a read option QB. I see two issues with Russell. First is his health. He has not completed a full season in college as a starter. And second is the issue you raise.
If our scouting indicates that Russell is healthy and the injuries were both one off occurrences and also think that he will adapt to the pro game, I think he would be worth a 2nd rounder, at the very highest. I really don't think he will make it to the 4th round. He had a really bad ankle injury requiring significant surgery to repair. But it occurred almost a month ago. If he is healthy for the Senior Bowl and has a solid combine, he might even make it to the first round. IMO that is too high a pick for him. At this point predicting a round for him is a crap shoot.
