So some people are ok with losing winnable games when UDFA kickers miss makeable trys cuz they're worried about " losing " some of those all important studs we wind up with with our 6th + 7t round picks ... ok got it .
Some people would rather take a kicker in the draft rather than take a chance and find a player in the later rounds who can turn into a Richard Sherman..ok got it.
Since we are going to be snarky with each other repeat after me: Gould was a UDFA, he was fine. Adam Viniteri was an UDFA, he was fine. Got it?
I'll say it slower: D O N ' T D R A F T A K I C K E R
The return on a drafted kicker vs kickers that weren't draft isn't enough to warrant wasting a draft pick on a kicker. Because contrary to what you obviously believe, all UDFA kickers don't miss kicks. And some drafted kickers actually don't make the roster. But hey...good thing you drafted that kicker huh? Got it?
Good.
And there are P L E N T Y of UDFA kickers who also sucked balls . I'm just trying to increase the odds of finding a solid one ... but fine , we agree to disagree .

One QB prospect who may be flying under the radar is Baylor's Seth Russell. His collegiate career has to be one of the toughest hard luck stories around. He was Bryce Petty's replacement and started the 2015 season. Was injured at the end of October 2015 (fractured neck bone going for extra yardage on a run). The next year the bottom fell out for the Baylor football program (sexual assault scandal) and the coach, the AD and the president of the university were all sacked. Russell started the 2016 season and got injured again when he was tackled on a QB run play and his foot got caught in a funny angle during the tackle and he fractured his ankle.
With two injuries in two years as a starter, the question of medical issues and durability is an obvious concern. But if he is cleared medically, he will be a solid QB prospect. IMO, he was running too much. Physically he is pretty solid (6'3" and 220). Very fast and nimble as a runner. He has a great feel for making plays on the run.
He has just about the best passing arm I have seen in a college QB. And he can throw with both velocity and with touch. My guess is he will fall into the 2nd or 3rd round in the 2017 draft, maybe further.
That's a guy I would love to have had 2 years ago w/a guy like Cutler still under contract and starting. Ceiling is high and likely could have got him for great value

Technically Cutler is still under contract. But I know where you are coming from.
I think we will need to rethink everything for this upcoming draft. We may have huge changes in the coaching staff and hopefully some long needed front office changes (would love to see Sweaty Teddy as dead man walking!). We may have a significant change in drafting philosophy (aka new HC) so it will be fun. If you can call what we will see in the offseason as fun.
Feely continued: "I think very highly of the position and the importance of the position, but the difference (between) an average kicker and the best kicker in the NFL is probably about 15 points in a season. You can go and you can find kickers that are very good, very talented, as free agents."
another article:
With an increased focus on accuracy from a kicker, are we to believe that the 2nd or 3rd best kicker in this year’s class is so steep a drop from the best kicker to warrant a 5 round gap (from 2 to 7)?
As an example, Ross Martin from Duke went 4-4 on kicks of 50+ yards this year, and the last 2 years, hit 81% (13/16), on kicks 40+ yards. Roberto Aguayo hit 1-3 kicks of 50+ yards this year, and the last 2 years, hit 64% (14/22) on kick 40+ yards. Both hit 100% of their extra point attempts. Yet Martin went undrafted and the Buccaneers took Aguayo in the 2nd round after trading up. [Ross Martin signed with the Jets as an Undrafted Free Agent, costing the Jets nothing]
I'm not discussing this any more. If you want to discuss the possibility of adding kicker, go for it. It would be a wasted pick. Completely wasted.
Aguayo and Mike Nugent are the biggest reasons why I would never spend a significant pick on a kicker. When you draft one high, or draft one at all, the team feels it needs to give years of opportunity before it cuts ties with him. So you get enjoy years of suckage before it ends.
If the Bears were flush with picks like NE, then yeah, they could chance a Gostkowski. With the current void of talent, kicker is the last thing I would draft.
My work schedule is starting to slow down a bit so I'm finally getting some time for college FB. And since our beloved Bears suck terribly, I'd rather watch the college game anyway.
I watched the Arkansas - Mississippi St game last night and there were two guys on the Arkansas roster I liked.
RB Rawleigh Williams III - 5'9" and 223. Nice power. Had 16 rush attempts for 205 yds and 4 TDs. Understand that the Miss St defense is not an SEC leader. But once he got in the open field, he was not pulled down from behind. WR Keon Hatcher - 6'1" and 205. Decent speed (looks like a 4.5 40 possibly a little faster). 4 receptions for 65 yds and 2 TDs. What I like about this kid is he is really focused, has nice hands and looks more like a RB than a WR. Has the physical strength to play through press coverage. On one of his TDs he had a couple of guys hanging on him and still extended his body to hit the pylon for the TD. IMO could be a nice slot NFL receiver.

Wow . He's got good zip on his throws . The ball stays under power and gets there quick ... plus he looks like a pretty decent athlete . If the Bears take a QB rd 1 and this kid falls to the 5th , whats to stop them from doing what the Redskins did a few years ago when they took RG3 and Cousins ? I like em , this kid looks like he has all the tools .

If he can't adopt to the NFL and be smarter on his runs he won't last Long in the NFL and will get killed. He'd be worth a 4/5th round pick for sure
The only thing stopping the Bears from drafting him if they were to take a QB high would be their like of Connor Shaw.
Was watching the Dallas game last night, and I told my brother in law that Dak is the type of running qb you want in the NFL, he uses his legs/speed to slide out of trouble while still trying to make a throw but doesn't run to often. That's what you need to find w/the college system qb's now; the Wilsons/Prescotts/Winston's/Newtons and not the RGIII's, Kapernicks or Vicks(older) that don't know they cannot take the kind of beating they did in college.

that's what I like about Watson. Watching him and reading about him it seems that he has the smarts to run when needed or to scramble out.
