Like I posted in the scheme of all things Pace has to balance when it comes time to talk deal again this one is lower on the totem pole than others. Because of the injuries and lack of progress by White he still has the team over somewhat of a barrel.
It may be slightly easier to reach a compromise using the limited number of games he's been available but that will only carry so far. If we don't make a good offer he accepts becoming a FA or forces Pace to tag him again so we don't have much leverage.
Beyond that how easy would it be to draft yet another WR with his skills. When he's on and his QB is on all you have to do is get a ball close and it's a catch. Not many WRs have his catching range, body control, and hand strength so he's not easily replaceable.
I'm not denying anything you are saying Soul. All I mean is that Pace has to look at al the factors that come with negotiating a large contract, that's all.
I think the best we can hope for is exactly what we could last year. How much of his money can be tied to per game roster bonuses. Some maybe but not as much as they'd like. Pace is either gonna have to gamble on AJ, gamble on White, or gamble on drafting another WR when we have other needs to address that are just as important if not more so.
The least risky would seem to be a gamble on AJ but that's just the way I see it. How they see it is what we'll find out next spring.
For those of you that are fine with Jeffery leaving the Bears, I assume you are hoping the Bears start a rookie QB in the next year or two. Who is that young QB going to throw the ball to? Is he going to have to rely on White, Royal, Meredith and Wilson? I don't see them as being able to help a young QB yet so hopefully the OL and running game is spectacular.
White = no idea yet what we have in him but isn't even as dependable as Meredith when he is on the field which has been very seldom.
Wilson = in contract year, injured much of his career, may not be back
Royal = too pricey to think they may not let him go if he can't stay healthy either
Meredith = solid #2 guy but not a even a top ten WR prospect
So where we began this past summer with a WR core that looked as good as any I've ever seen around Chicago things sure have changed. If we put a young inexperienced QB out there with a WR core that resembles the days of "Moose", Bennett, Hester, and Knox we may as well get ready for a few more years of top ten picks too.
I have to admit as you, Hawk, and Butkus have pointed out regarding AJ's talent. If you throw a jump ball to Jeffrey as a strong armed QB (Rookie or not) he has as good a chance as any NFL WR to make that catch based on his talent.

Seems like that could be a huge asset to a new QB, wouldn't it? Another thing a young QB relies heavily on is a talented TE so it would be nice to get one of those too since Miller won't be around too much longer.

I'm gonna be watching Braunecker a lot these last 7 game and the kid Brown we picked up from Balt. has some good traits as a receiver as well. It's getting harder to find great TEs in the draft so you find one with some skills and develop him.
It's nice to have an all around TE but there aren't may out there. Most of the 270lbs guys lack somewhat as receivers and the 250lbs guys can't always handle an NFL OT. So you base your schemes on what you have.
His talent is undeniable . So is his injury history . Couple that with his suspension and I'd bet that he's lost 'some' money - sure some team is going to offer him a good contract with more money than most ... but it won't be what it could have been and it comes with more risk than a player with a 'cleaner' backstory .
I'd still like to see him on the Bears , but not at ridiculous money , and if someone offers more and he walks away , then c'est la vie - we can spend it on other players who can also make us better .
Now tell me just how getting better at one position while getting worse at others solves any problems with getting better overall as a team? It doesn't work that way blue.
We cut ties with Marshall and freed up money to sign McPhee. For a brief period of time our pass rush improved ('til he went down with a knee injury) but White wasn't there to pick up any slack from Marshall and no one else has done that to date either.
You can't make a team better unless you make the entire team better. We seem to have gotten lucky as far as replacing Forte and using some of that money to sign our own FAs but the flip side is we did not get better at WR or as a team by swapping BM's pay checks for McPhee's so far.
Maybe that looks good on paper but in reality it won't work if the players you choose to offload are productive players. It ends up being a zero sum gain at best.
Better than a negative sum gain ( which is what we've been doing ... didn't we go from 10-6 to 8-8 to 6-10 to ... ) - bad pattern here . Besides he probably won't sign here cuz he doesn't want to . I'm done wondering about AJ cuz I don't expect him back .

The negative sum gain has more to do with having made back to back poor choices for HCs than anything else. That and more than a few misses in the draft.
If both Cutler and AJ go via FA then once again we'll have allowed some of our most talented players to walk having gotten nothing in return to replace them with. I'd like to know on what planet that will ever produce a quick turnaround where a perennial loser becomes a winner just like that.
This team is about to face another series of post season dilemmas and so far those decisions they have made may well have hurt more than helped. When does that change?
Anyone who thinks this impacts AJ's future income is fooling themselves. Anyone who doesn't think AJ will get top 5-10 money is fooling themselves. Tavon Austin is getting 10.5 mill per year...you don't think AJ is getting anywhere from 12 to 14 million a year as the top player at his position in free agency? I want some of that stuff you're smoking! It's very simple...and I've gone over it a million times. He's the best at his position available in free agency, the salary cap is going up, there are multiple teams with needs who have very good cap space. Here are the teams with about 30 million or more in cap space this off season:
You going to tell me a team like the Patriots, the Bucs, the 49ers, the Panthers, or the Titans won't be very....VERY interested in a player with the talent AJ has? You are absolutely kidding yourself if you think any different.
AJ will get his money, the Bears and other teams will try to use this to get a better deal but AJ will win out in the end. All we can hope for is that next year our new QB will use AJ and White to their fullest potential

I don't think they can rule a throw to the bench as a completion.
