If we play it smart Alex I think that's the right way to do it. Watching and learning behind Favre for a bit helped make Rodgers as good as he was once he took over. I would hope it wouldn't be three years before a change took place in Chicago though.
+1 The situation is win/win. If Cutler is solid, it's not like it's a bad thing to have a gifted youngster playing behind him. If Cutler is hurt, then you have a good backup. I just don't see ANY downside to bringing in a solid QB in this draft. On the other hand, I see it being poor planning if the Bears fail to even try and draft a solid QB. Heck, I'd rather see the Bears try to draft a franchise QB and whiff - than to not even try. I would at least have respect for them trying.
I'm a little shocked Pace didn't do that this past year when Prescott was sitting there to be had. I still can't understand what made with Bush or Hall a better BPA pick than Prescott and I don't believe they were. I see Fox's hand in those picks.
Teams who are the most consistent winners always draft QBs before they need them. It's team like Cleveland who are always drafting them under the gun and making mistakes. IMHO that's exactly what we don't want to do which to me also means keeping Cutler until we have begun to assemble some potential successors.
NE has Brady but still drafted Garoppolo in the 2nd round and also drafted Jacoby Brissett in the 3rd. With Brady out they still had capable starters who could win. GB took Rodger when they still had Favre not to mention about a half dozen others they used as backups and then traded. This is the correct way to do it.

+1 It makes me think or that George Santayana quote, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” That not only applies to the Bears historical QB woes, but it also brings to mind the mishandling of Brian Urlacher when he was clearly getting up there in age and slowing down. I always thought of Brian as the QB of our defense. He was the heart-and-soul of that unit, who made the individual players on the unit better. The Bears let Urlacher go, and had no post-Urlacher plan (unless they thought Briggs = Urlacher... which was pretty stupid if they thought Lance was going to be the leader on D like Brian was). So Brian leaves and the D (and ultimately the team) struggled. It was a mess that could have been avoided, IMHO.
I see some similarities now with our QB situation.
What is the plan for the post-Cutler era? Is there one?
Or are we just flying by the seat of our pants hoping something good happens with Hoyer or (*shudder) Barkley? Connor Shaw? Sure he (like David Fales) looked good in pre-season. Just like others have over the years for us. But they are not franchise QB's. Heck, Fales looked unbelievably good a year ago in the pre-season. Big QB rating. Looked great... but those are not "real" games.
Of all the QB prospects out there, Kaaya is the most "meh" imo.
You could be right. We really don't know though. Dak Prescott was ranked pretty "meh" last season for the draft. I went back and read about all the "darlings" of the upcoming draft, after the obvious big names like Goff, Wentz etc. Prescott was buried as just one of the "other guys" ... Walter Football compared him to Tim Tebow.
It just goes to show people are often flat wrong at this stage regarding QBs:
"Prescott's play has been somewhat reminiscent of Tim Tebow at Florida because Prescott is playing in the same offense for Tebow's former offensive coordinator, Dan Mullen, the Mississippi State head coach. Like Tebow, Prescott needs to improve his pocket passing and accuracy for the NFL."

Let's not forget Prescott landed into a perfect, dream scenario for any QB, let alone a rookie. Truly great OL allows him to stand in the pocket all day and grades the ground for the run game to make things easier on him.
QUOTE JABF;"It makes me think or that George Santayana quote, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
One of my all time favorite quotes and of more than just a little significance of late.
If they do trade Cutler (because it would just plain dumb to release him IMHO) the head scratcher to me is why do it when you aren't prepared to "move on"? To me moving on means moving on to something greater than you have. Moving on into the unknown isn't really moving on. To me it's more like shrugging your shoulders and giving up.
The other factors that argue against are that in the current world of rapidly escalating starting QB salaries he's become more affordable not less affordable. We aren't looking at a guy whose cap is northward of $20 mil and rising. In fact it doesn't even get to more than $20 mil until 2020 when at the rate we're going a $30 mil cap number for a starter won't be all that rare.
From 2017-2020 his average salary is less than $16 mil per year and starts at $12.5 mil and $13.5 mil in 2017-2018. The other $2.5 mil is all per game bonuses. Whether anyone wants to admit of not he has a sweetheart deal for any team from now on so IMHO trading him shouldn't be all that big an issue. I mean if it's a quickie divorce we're after we should at least get a fair property settlement right?
I don't know much about Kaaya but the idea of yet another college QB from the land of citrus fruits and scam artists doesn't sit well with me. When the cold winds blow off that lake in November it's a whole new ball game for a QB so whoever we draft will need a decent enough arm to combat those or we end up with another Hoyer or Kyle Orton v2.0.

Yeah, I'll say he missed his mark on this. Playing in the same offense as Tebow is all that may have made him like Tebow. Tebow never could pass worth a damn whereas all Prescott needed was to be with the right team, with the right coaches, and he is.
Find the guy, draft the guy. Btw, this why you should never wait until you NEED to draft one to draft one. Bears should have had a young legit prospect in the wings for the last 1-4 years, now you have to deal w/getting what you get b/c you HAVE to draft one.
