"Chicago Bears scouting Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya"
The Chicago Bears haven’t drafted a quarterback earlier than the 4th round since Kyle Orton in 2005 and they haven’t picked one in the 1st round since Rex Grossman in 2003.
In 2009 the Bears traded Orton, two 1sts and a 3rd for Jay Cutler and they haven’t hit on a young signal caller to learn the ropes during the Cutler era.
The last three quarterback names they called on draft day were David Fales (6th round, 2014), Nathan Enderle (5th round, 2011) and Dan LeFevour (6th round, 2010). The only one of these three still playing in the NFL is Fales, who is on Baltimore’s practice squad.
The current quarterbacking depth chart for the Bears is 33 year old Cutler and 26 year old Matt Barkley 1-2, with 31 year old Brian Hoyer and 25 year old Conner Shaw both on injured reserve. Of these 4, only Cutler is under contract for next season, although Shaw will be a restricted free agent.
Chicago will probably be hoping a QB prospect falls into place for them on draft day, regardless if they cut Cutler loose or not. General manager Ryan Pace has talked bout the importance of drafting quarterbacks, but he’s yet to have one make sense for his ‘best player available’ philosophy.
Bleacher Reports’ Matt Miller is reporting that the Bears have interest in quarterback Brad Kaaya of the Miami Hurricanes.
—A source in the Miami Hurricanes' coaching staff tipped me off to an interesting nugget: The Chicago Bears have been at the last two games and are asking about quarterback Brad Kaaya. A person close to Kaaya confirmed the news when asked and said he's already spoken with general manager Ryan Pace about the quarterback.
For those of you not familiar with Kaaya, CBSSports has him as the #4 QB prospect in the upcoming draft with a 2nd round projection. The junior is listed at 6’4”, 210 pounds and through 9 games this season he’s thrown for 2,340 yards with 17 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.
The Palm Beach Post is reporting that besides the Bears, it’s the Arizona Cardinals, New Orleans Saints, Houston Texans, San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins that “visit UM’s training facility and games more than others, and ask the most about Kaaya.”
Kaaya hasn’t revealed if he plans to enter the 2017 NFL Draft yet, so it’s possible the Bears’ scouting will come into play in 2018.
