Spotrac has a manage roster option now, pretty fun to mess with. Got the Bears to 22 mil in cap from neg 9 mil.
www.spotrac.com/nfl/tools/roster/chicago-bears/
Cuts:
Leno, saved 6.2mil
Massie saved 6.7 mil
Graham saved 7mil
Hicks saved 10.6 mil
Miller saved 1.2 mil
Wims 920k
Notice how few def players are cut. The def is fine, in theory, the O was a problem well beyond the QB, the OT's are replacement lvl at best and Miller/Wims are cut to prove a point that should have been given after the 1st NO's game, playing stupid isn't allowed; especiallyl when you are a replacement lvl talent. Graham played well enough to stay even w/his cost but the Bears cannot afford him. I would guess they actually try and restructure Hicks/Graham for 1-2 more years, but I'm not trying that.
But making 6 cuts means the team has to sign 10 players to get to 51 instead of 4, that 22 mil isn't going far.

Used this link to cut(same players as above) and restructure/resign and sign FA's.
Restructured Mack/Fuller to add about 20 more mill, meaning they had about 42 mil, the #'s were exact w/OTC
Resigned Hicks/Mingo/Graham to lower contracts
Hicks is a really hard 3-4 DE to replace b/c he's the size of a NT, most are around 280-300. It will be easier to draft someone to learn from him. Graham is still a solid RZ target will be a good backup to Kmet next year. Mingo earned a re sign, Mario Edwards is suspended b/c of a substance or I would have looked at him also.
Signed
Sammy Watkins
Sam Tevi(starting LT from the Chargers)
The team still has about 7-8mil to resign the other 5 players, those are going to be far smaller contracts and really the names aren't the bigger issue as we don't know who's even seeing FA yet or not.
The more I think about this, the more I really think the Bears wouldn't trade back into the mid 20's, all the teams around them need QB's, and the Fins/Jets might feel like pulling a Browns and draft a top 5 player other then QB to build around and then look at taking Jones in the 20's. So I'm redoing the draft.
so for the draft
20th Mac Jones(already explained previously)
52nd Liam Eichenberg ND OT
starting LT prospect, but more fitted for a OT run heavy zone scheme, which is likely why he is there in the 2nd to begin with. He isn't a perfect fit for Chicago at LT, but at RT? This could be a good fit, and again the coaches ability to work w/the OL and coach them up is a bright spot on the team, it's very possible this guy can be a starting RT and move to LT down the line.
3rd round I traded back, when I've been trading back I have been doing so for specific reasons, previously the OT's I wanted were taken at 20, drop back grab Jones. This time both edge rushers were still on the table, and the trade back was small, and I got a 6th out of it, I knew one would still be there and I was right b/c both were.
90th Hamilcar Rashed jr. Edge Oregon State
developmental Edge, that has starting potential down the line, sound like a fit for a team that has 2 aging stud OLB's? Like the previous pick he is capable of lining up on the Line or standing up, ie similar to Mack.
149th Trevon Grimes WR FL.
*From the sounds of it I doubt this guy is here day 3, big possession WR, doesn't have the speed but has great GUAGI(if you listened to 670 the last few years you know) chain mover, rz target WR 3 or 4, ie perfect fit for a Nagy system.
176th Jordan Scott DT Oregon
Bears need a Big boy that can maybe replace Hicks next to Goldman, or replace Goldman outright. If the guy was a day 1 starter he wouldn't be here, he isn't a great pass rusher, but can crash the pocket, and early in his career is an early down run stopper, but the potential is there, Hicks wasn't Hicks day 1 either.
180th Jack Sanborn ILB Wisconson
While not a short term answer, maybe not even a long term answer at ILB, the Bears need youth behind Danny T to learn and develop behind, football IQ is there, but he is limited athletically. Could he grow into a ILB next to Smith maybe, but it won't be this year; they'll need to find a cheap training camp cut to fit behind Danny they can hope but cannot rely on Sanborn year one.
196th Cary Angeline TE NC State
Isn't a Kelce type TE, needs to learn how to block better, but is a big bodied RZ target that can backup Kmet eventually.
