He is not fast, but has great feet (under shoulders, easily changes stride from shuffle in traffic to full stride) has great vision. Feet + vision mean he will consistently find space. He is not a break away guy, but his footwork helps him keep leverage on contact and get yards after contact.

Timing, power and vision=elusiveness. That trumps pure speed.
It's not like he's a plodder, he's a 230lb back. 40 speed is overrated for HBs (mind you his 40 is average at worst) and vision is immeasurable. Though pure speed is a weapon, it's not the only weapon. I love the way he slashes and makes contact at the second level.

I would tend to agree in that 40 speed is somewhat overrated(and at the combine only 8 of 22 were slower than him, and some of them were full backs, so not quite average at worst, more like average at best)...but his 3 cone drill would have put him at 10th of 13 backs who did it at the combine. His short shuttle would have put him at 10th out of 13 backs who performed the drill. And he did all of those at his pro day which was hand timed, not electronic...so those times would be even slower had he done them at the combine. Again, he's got speed, but he cannot maintain it.
He does have great vision, however vision does equal elusiveness. He runs patient, sets up blocks well and often makes great decisions. He PROCESSES INFORMATION very quickly. Thats what game speed/agility is, the ability to process information and do it quickly and THAT is what makes him elusive. Perhaps we were saying the same thing and just have a way of wording it differently.
I'm not trying to say he's slow, but he's lacking the elite gear that will stop him from getting caught from behind like he did in Indy/Minny.
I took exception w/the idea that he reminded someone of AP, he's not AP, not even close, he's more Bettis then AP, and honestly when you watched Bettis run he still looked quicker; but then again I wouldn't compare anyone to 2 HoF players in their rookie year, that's unfair.
But he's not fast. guy looks like a truck instead of a ferrari. Nothing wrong w/that, but lets not act like the truck isn't a truck.
But there are fast trucks too. They race 'em right? LOL
I don't disagree with you but the more I watch the clip the more I believe that if Rhodes hadn't had the angle to stop him the two guys in pursuit would not have. He wasn't pulling away from them but they weren't catching up either.
No he's not AP nor is he even built like him. He's very thick in the thighs and ass which is where his power and his burst comes from but he's no sprinter. Langford is much faster once he gets rolling but for the first 10-20 yards Howard would either give him a run for his money or maybe even beat him.

Very fun to watch him play.
Good read tragic.
One of the observations in his scouting reports was how he was able to "get small" to slip through tight gaps. When you look at the end zone shot of that run you can see that. It's almost like he's able to turn his shoulder a bit to slip through while keeping his legs, hips, and feet square upfield. Once he slips through his acceleration is obvious. He's off to the races and if Rhodes had not caught him I'm not sure the pursuit could have.
To me it's his vision that is his best attribute . He knows how to read his blocking and exploit the soft spot . Plus he doesn't get tripped up by arm tackles and people grabbing his shoelaces when he runs thru the hole - Ditka had a term for that when he said he was " tired of guys tripping over the tall grass " ( i.e. tired of the guys who go down too easy ) .
Walter wasn't the fastest guy either , but his running style won games , and I'll take a little more strength over a little more speed anytime .
