Bears RB Jordan Howard was the fastest back in the NFL in week 8 CHICAGO, IL - OCTOBER 31: By: Chris Kwiecinski | 46 minutes ago
Jordan Howard’s 69-yard run on the Bears opening possession of the game set the tone for the Bears on offense.
After squeezing through the Vikings defensive line, Howard took off downfield and sprinted deep into Minnesota territory before getting tackled at the 13 yard line. Howard showed off his speed on that play, but just how fast was he?
According to NFL Communications, Howard was the fastest NFL running back in week eight as he notched speeds up to 20.76 miles per hour.
Welcome to the NFL, rookie.
Howard’s final rushing stat line of 26 carries for 153 yards and a score was good enough to earn him the week eight rushing title.
It was also his third 100-yard game of the season, as the Bears improved to 2-1 on the season when Howard rushes for more than 100 yards in a game.
It may well be that his lower body is just so thick and muscular he can't sustain that speed as long as a RB with a different build. He runs with a very short choppy stride too so there's a lot of leg action going on there compared to a longer strider like Langford.
I know one thing. He's not slow getting to a hole or through one. He has a good burst.
I actually found an article some where that argued that teams that can consistently produce big plays on OFF (+20 yard passes and +15 yard runs) with a lower yards per play average, win more than teams that grind out 4-5 yards per play yet don't proud e big gains. Take it for what it's worth. I thought their argument was interesting but they took too much out of context. It was very motm-ish.
If I recall correctly the River's led packers with their sorry running game but good passing game was their proof.
There are a myriad of factors that go into Howards "speed" display being the fastest in week 8...the main one being opportunity. The bottom line, as I posted in the other thread...he ran a 4.59 hand timed 40 at his pro day...that is not fast.
There are different varieties of RB. I like what we have in Howard. He gets it done. That's all I care about. If he's not the fastest, that's fine with me.

I agree JABF. He's got some wiggle to him, he runs hard and when he gets good blocking he makes the most of it. I'm perfectly ok with Howard.
