That going into a conservative offensive protect mode instead of a go for the throat mode when ahead is part of what I think got him fired from Denver.
I wonder if they are forced to be conservative due to Hoyer limiting what they can do effectively. I don't know if they CAN do much else with Hoyer's weak arm.
I have not seen the game yet, but going by reviews, my understanding was that they were more trying to hold a lead than to enhance the lead. I might be wrong. I'll make my own conclusion afteri watch the game, but that was my perception.
You can't have a long game (which means the defense plays closer to the line) and that affects both the short passing game as well as the running game. You have to spread them out.
really it's the entire O, but mostly Hoyer, your the qb vs a good but not great Def, you need to get the ball in the endzone. FG's aren't good enough, and that's mostly on him.
I love no the comp % and no picks, but you have to put TD's on the board also. And might I add, while the 3rd down % was nice today, overall I'm getting really tired of the pass behind the 1st down marker on 3rd downs. That won't work most of the time and it's a good way to stall drives in general.

Whenever Hoyer attempts a longer throw it is sick to watch. He has no power on the ball, and he doesn't have accuracy. That's what it looks like to me. I mean, how do you work with that limitation? You run the ball and call a zillions dink-and-dunk stuff, but a D like today isn't stupid. And Hoyer looked out of sync at times with AJ... they just were not on the same page on some key passes that failed. The ball went where AJ wasn't.

Spot on IMHO 99. Another problem is not only his lack of arm strength but his lack of accuracy downfield. I thought he cost us 3 TDs at least which ended up being FGs.
If we could combine Culter & Hoyer we might have the perfect QB. The arm strength to make plays down the field with the knowledge of when to take what the defense gives you. Well, maybe not perfect but as good as we fans can expect in Chicago.

What's sad is that the D is pretty decent. If we had any offense at all, we'd be winning games like today. Yes, the D has its own issues, but when you consider they are decimated with injuries - and still making some good plays - it's amazing that they do as well as they are doing.
When we needed yards on the final drive and he kept passing to the 4 yard check down I almost lost it. Could be the play calls but Hoyers MO is the quick 3 yard pass. Hoyer/Cutler IDC we still suck. I don't blame the defense at all this game they did fine.

+1 That is exactly how I feel too. I keep thinking about how painful it is going to be to have to watch the rest of this season. It's not going to get any better.

I'll have to check the play by play but the 3rd down conversations stopped in the 2nd half. Once again, opposing DEF adjusted and Fox/Loggains did not.

I could be dead wrong, but I don't know that we have the ability to do much once the defenses adjust. We are pretty weak and one-dimensional right now at QB in particular. A defense can adjust to the run/dink-and-dunk offense we have, with zero worry about us doing any damage beyond that. I wonder if the play calling is severely restricted with us having a noodle-arm quarterback. When he attempts the longer passes they scare the crap out of me watching them float - and they're often way off target.
I don't know what you do with that. It's like trying to go to a gun fight with a pocket knife. Nothing good is going to come of that.
When Cutler is healthy we need to get him in. I can scream at the TV when the interceptions and fumbles come. But right now I'd rather have that than what we see now. This sucks.
