How is the success/failure rate comparing the drafted in Top5 to drafted Outside the Top5?
I'd take Rodgers over Watt and therefor I take the best QB prospect over the best D prospect. If we would have Mariotta, Wentz, Luck, Goff or even Lynch then yeah I'd take the D

Rodgers was drafted in the late first. If we were to get a top 5 pick, we could trade up from our second and get a QB as well.
You know Alex Smith was drafted in the top 5 right during Rodgers draft class?

Smith was 1st Overall with Rodgers waiting and waiting and waiting to get picked. Still, Smith was and is a good QB that can win if given the Chance. He has his flaws but I'd take him over Cutler. Much like Mariota or Luck or Wentz or Goff.
We Need to finally fix this Position and we will have the best Chance picking the one we like, not to one who falls.
more and more you can get qbs that can play in the 2nd and 3rd round, but that can be said for every position. The team needs to identify the most impactfull player they can get w/their pick and grab them. If that's a qb so be it, if it's another position fine also, get that guy.

Last 10 SB winning QBs
Super Bowl 40. Ben Roethlisberger (Hines Ward), 0 TDs Super Bowl 41. Peyton Manning (MVP), 1 TD Super Bowl 42. Eli Manning (MVP), 2 TDs Super Bowl 43: Ben Roethlisberger (Santonio Holmes), 1 TD Super Bowl 44: Drew Brees (MVP), 2 TDs Super Bowl 45: Aaron Rogers (MVP), 3TDs Super Bowl 46: Eli Manning (MVP), 1 TD Super Bowl 47: Joe Flacco (MVP), 3TDs Super Bowl 48: Russell Wilson (Malcolm Smith), 2TDs Super Bowl 49: Tom Brady (MVP), 4TDs Super Bowl 50: Peyton Manning (Von Miller), 0TDs
Brees, Wilson and Brady are the only ones not taken in the first round and Brees was a second round pick.
Here are the losers:
2015 Cam Newton 2014 Russell Wilson 2013 Peyton Manning 2012 Colin Kaepernick 2011 Tom Brady 2010 Ben Roethlisberger 2009 Peyton Manning 2008 Kurt Warner 2007 Tom Brady 2006 Rex Grossman
8 QBs, 4 first rounders and 1 second. In fact 41 SBs have featured a QB who was drafted in the first round. 41!!!!! 2 of the 9 that didn't featured 2nd round QB.
Everyone loves to list the non first round QBs that make it big and loves to list the first round guys that bust, but no one ever lists the non-first round QBs that never make it or even get a single snap, No one ever lists the 100s of FA undrafted QBs each season that never play in the NFL. There were 131 Qbs drafted since 2006. How many of the QBs outside round 1 'made it.' Shoud I post the list?
I understand the risk with 1st rounder is higher, and you pay a bigger penalty in lost money/time/pick with a first round QB. But lets not get caught in the trap of thinking that finding a QB in the later rounds is going somehow be easier. Stats/NFL-insiders/guys-who-do-this-for-a-living will all tell you that if you want to win games and championships (which I assume is the point) you take a QB early.
Would I draft a QB next year? Depends. Depends on how the season finishes. Culter won't be here, Hoyer might, Shaw might. So..can Hoyer/Shaw hold the team while Pace fixes the OL or DEF with early picks? Maybe. Living overseas its hard to watch college football so I cant speak to the value of the QBs. It also depends on the teams drafting ahead of us. But I don't want Pace walking into the draft room thinking.....nah we don't need a QB early.

Sorry to bump and old thread but some things send me down a rabbit hole.
Here are the undrafted FA QBs signed (or brought in for tryouts) this year, How many of them are still on a roster somewhere? This doesn't count the QBs leaving college that don't even get a sniff from the NFL.
Joe Licata QB Buffalo Jason Vander Laan QB Ferris State Liam Nadler QB Gannon (Tryout) Chuckie Keeton QB Utah State (tryout) Blake Frohnapfel QB UMass (tryout) Max Wittek QB Hawaii Mike Bercovici QB Arizona State Matt Johnson QB Bowling Green Jacob Huesman QB UT-Chattanooga Nick Arbuckle QB Georgia State Josh Woodrum QB Liberty Philip Ely QB Toledo (Tryout) Steven Bench QB USF (Tryout) Jake Coker QB Alabama Stephen Rivers QB Northwestern State (Tryout) Trevone Boykin QB TCU Vernon Adams QB Oregon (tryout) Joe Callahan, QB, Wesley Joel Stave QB Wisconsin
Anyone wanna take their chances there for a franchiese QB?
