Hernandez has been my "value" pick for OG for most of the draft. Played for a smaller school (Tx-El Paso). Not as polished as Nelson. May need a bit of coaching before he steps in.
But a real animal. Very strong and physical. Has a reputation for being nasty.
I'm with you. Hernandez seems like a good pick up here. Landry's reportedly undisclosed injury raises some serious red flags. I think we trade out of our spot here though. With the players left, we could prolly regain our 3rd round pick by sliding down to the teens and packaging it with our 5P8 or our 4P15
The only issue I see with Hernandez is he may not be there when we pick. A lot of analysts had him as a late 1st round pick.
But I really hope he is there. I think he is just the kind a material that a coach like Heistand will turn into a perennial pro-bowler.
If Hernandez gets past the Giants at 2, the Bears could have a very decent shot at him....unless the Colts double barrel guard picks.
There are some really nice players left, but Hernandez is the only one I really want. I like Landry, but I don't want another under sized LB when the Bears now have 2 undersized ILB's, and Acho as an undersized OLB.

Need someone that can handle TE's besides Floyd.
Yeah, another guy I like is Kemoko Turay from Rutgers. The guy is an athletic freak, like Floyd who can rush the passer, but is athletic enough to do other things. I also still think another secondary piece gets added. Eric Reid is still out there in free agency, and he's a guy I could see them brining in, reuniting with Fang, and in passing situations he comes in and Amos drops down to cover the tight end or rush the passer.
Also, I wouldn't worry too much about Smiths size...Freeman was only 235 pounds too...so it's not like they didn't have "smaller" linebackers before. Hell Patrick Willis was only 240 when he was drafted.

Since we're talking about pass rushers, how about Roquan Smith's Georgia teammate EDGE Lorenzo Carter everyone?
Overview Carter was a five-star prospect and one of the most heralded players in the nation when he was recruited by Georgia but he never made the impact expected of him as a Bulldog. However, Carter played with increased toughness and confidence this year and his NFL potential began to reassert itself once again. Carter is an outside linebacker in a 3-4 or 4-3 with sideline-to-sideline range and the tools to become a productive edge rusher in sub-packages. He needs to add more bulk, but he is a future NFL starter.
Strengths Tremendously long and rangy Long strider with ability to cover ground quickly and close on wide flowing plays Effective use of arm length Consistent punch and separation against blocks Takes contain responsibilities seriously Plus quickness in lateral slides Frame unravels to catch running backs who think they are in the clear Uses long-arm stab to access blocker's frame and set the edge Build-up speed creates downfield angles to the sideline to challenge ball carriers and receivers after catch Active as tackler to search for and yank at the football Forced and recovered six career fumbles Has edge-threatening get-off Uses slinky upper body to slide around blocker's punch Flashes talent to flip hips around the arc and flatten to the quarterback Posted 15 career sacks
Weaknesses Gangly frame begging for more weight and muscle Thin legs offer subpar base Long tackles can neutralize his length and push him around Not ready to handle downhill rushing attack headed for his doorstep Herd tackler with just moderate solo numbers More of a straight-line mover than expected Rush can be too easily stalled when rushing as an end Slow to activate hands as a pass rusher Will need to develop rush plan and hand usage to counter his lack of play strength Not enough boom for conversion of speed to power
Sources Tell Us "He was a really big deal coming out but I didn't think he developed as much after his freshman year as I expected him to. He's been in a lot of different roles over there but this year I thought he looked more aggressive and more comfortable outside." -- SEC area scout for NFC team
Lorenzo Carter pre-draft-scouting-report By Josh Eccles - March 22, 2018
If you watched any of the 2017 College Football Championship Game then you know just as well as the next person how athletic that Georgia Bulldogs defense was. Their offense is impressive but it was the speed and athleticism on the defensive side of the ball that kept them in it early and throughout the game. Linebacker Roquan Smith is the big name that comes from that defense, but the forgotten hero is Lorenzo Carter.
His senior year at Georgia was solid as he tallied 61 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and a team-high 3 forced fumbles.
His performance at the NFL Combine was impressive - the only downside being that it seems that he is in a group of really impressive defensive linemen and linebackers. If it weren’t for that, I would imagine that he would be shooting up draft boards - a sentiment that now, based on his pro day performance, may becoming a reality.
His biggest assets are his speed and athleticism. In college his best game was probably this one against Notre Dame - it was that game that solidified the fact that he is a freak-athlete with loads of potential. He showed off his skillset in terms of run defending, rushing the passer, and dropping back into coverage.
The vertical jump is often overlooked but, at least in Carter’s case, it’s another asset added to his arsenal. With plus-jumping abilities, Carter could feasibly be utilized on special teams in terms of blocking field goals (along with opportunities on defense to disrupt any opposing quarterback’s throwing lanes).
Lorenzo Carter has upside but there is still room for his game to grow. Detractors will argue that his weaknesses are too significant to warrant him being drafted anytime sooner than the middle of the second round; things like having slow hands and a gangly frame are things that can be worked on at the next level.
As previously mentioned, Lorenzo Carter went through some drills at the Georgia Pro Day in Athens on Wednesday — on hand for that, most notably, was New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
It seemed that he was working closely with the linebackers, which leads many to believe that the Patriots may be looking to add someone to their linebacking corps, someone who may eventually be able to fill a Jamie Collins-esque role on the defense.
Hubbard is a 4-3 guy, so I hope we don't get him. Landry or Hernandez of those 4. Key bothers the heck out of me, great potential but if the head/heart aren't there it doesn't matter.
Hubbard reminded me a lot of Joey Bosa, which makes me wonder if he really is just a 4-3 DE only or could he switch to a 3-4 OLB?
I agree w/ you on Key, dude could be this year's Robert Nkemdiche. High ceiling, lot of potential but legit character concern.
I really like Hernandez, in fact he's my favorite G behind Nelson and I'd love to have him. Unless of course Harry Hiestand thinks the guys we have are more than enough, then we definitely must pick a pass rusher instead. Good thing the second rd starts at 6pm central.

EDGE Harold Landry, Arden Key, Sam Hubbard (if one of them is still there this is a no brainer, we need a pass rusher) OG Will Hernandez (C James Daniels)
Some great names still left on the board. Day 2 should be exciting.

This is not me saying I want Hubbard, I know zilch about him. But if the biggest knock on him is that he’s more a 4-3 guy, isn’t the fact that the Bears don’t play their base 3-4 a good chunk of the time kind of negate that concern?
