NFL Rumors: Chicago Bears May Have Made A Mistake With The Trey Burton Deal, Per ‘Bleacher Report’ Will Trey Burton turn out to be a success or bust for the Chicago Bears? Charlie Neibergall / AP Images
The Chicago Bears have attempted to transform their team from bottom-dwellers to NFC North contenders in one offseason. In a series of events, the Bears struck deals with wide receiver Allen Robinson and tight end, Trey Burton. While the Robinson signing was great, it was signing Burton that drew a few head shakes. So much so, that according to Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report, he believes the Bears may actually regret signing Burton to such a big deal.
The reason for this is that Burton has done nothing in his four-year career to warrant a $32 million deal.
While the Bears did have funds to throw around, they may have thrown it in the wrong direction. Maybe the Bears were excited to get a player coming off a Super Bowl victory, but still, $32 million is a number reserved for the likes of All-Pro players, not guys who were third on the depth chart just a few months ago.

32 mill is a number reserved for Pro Bowl players? LMAO!!! Gronk signed for 54 mill, Kelce for 47 mill, Jordan Reed for 47 mill, Zach Ertz for 43 mill, Cameron Brate for 41 mill, Charles Clay for 38 mill, Kyle Rudolph for 37 mill, Colby Fleener for 36 mill, hell Dwayne Allen got 29 mill in 2016...but please...tell me more about how 32 mill is reserved for Pro Bowl players....

That Charlie Neibergall must have a lot of gall, I guess.
I was stunned when I heard the the total value of the contract, but it's a price you currently gotta pay to get FA's to play with the Bears. But he fills an important role on the team - a pass catching TE. Sims is a no show in the passing game, Shaheen has the potential, but has yet to show it. Burton was the right signing, question is just if the price was right. Only time will tell.

Slow news day. Trey was 3rd on the depth chart, but behind 2 studs in ertz and celek. Thats like being 3rd behind Jordan and pippen, not really an indictment on you.
As butkus already pointed out, 32 mil for a TE isn't for pro bowlers, whoever said that is laughably behind the times or willfully ignorant

I just looked it up on spotrac.com and it is indeed a pretty big contract for a tight-end.
We take an average cap hit of about $7.5 million for 2018 and 2019. We then have an option to either:
- Keep him for 2020 and 2021 at an average cap hit of $8.5 million; or - Cut him and take a $3.75 million dead cap. - Could also pay him for 2020 and take a $1.8 million dead cap in 2021
If I compare to Jimmy Graham it doesn't look too bad!
- His deal is effectively 2 years + 1 option. The average cap hit for the two guaranteed years (2018 & 2019) is just over $9 million per year.
- They can then either keep him for 2020 for a cap hit of $11.7 million or cut him for dead cap of $3.7 million.
Last Edit: Apr 22, 2018 5:49:48 GMT -6 by britishbearfan: I tried to compare to Travis Kelce - but it was a bad comparison since it includes extension of rookie contract.
I am more interested about the torrid love affair with Sims.
Its not that hard to figure out, NAGY needs 3 TE, each preform different duties. Burton is basically the a slot wr, and #2 option. Shaheen and Sims will be more traditional TEs.
People over critise Sims, like they did Leno and massie. He wasn't great but wasnt so bad he needed to be cut.
If NAGY didnt want him I doubt he'd still be here.
