I am more interested about the torrid love affair with Sims.
Its not that hard to figure out, NAGY needs 3 TE, each preform different duties. Burton is basically the a slot wr, and #2 option. Shaheen and Sims will be more traditional TEs.
People over critise Sims, like they did Leno and massie. He wasn't great but wasnt so bad he needed to be cut.
If NAGY didnt want him I doubt he'd still be here.
True. And if Pace didn't want Glennon, I'm sure he wouldn't have signed him. That really means nothing other than the guys in charge think they are doing the right thing.
I always thought Sims played the underperforming TE role.

Actually Glennon is a really good comparison, who isn't on the team this year? Glennon; who was signed the same year Sims was, Glennon, how much dead cap did both players have this year(4.5ish), both. Who wasn't wanted on the team, Glennon. Thanks for helping.
I just looked it up on spotrac.com and it is indeed a pretty big contract for a tight-end.
We take an average cap hit of about $7.5 million for 2018 and 2019. We then have an option to either:
- Keep him for 2020 and 2021 at an average cap hit of $8.5 million; or - Cut him and take a $3.75 million dead cap. - Could also pay him for 2020 and take a $1.8 million dead cap in 2021
If I compare to Jimmy Graham it doesn't look too bad!
- His deal is effectively 2 years + 1 option. The average cap hit for the two guaranteed years (2018 & 2019) is just over $9 million per year.
- They can then either keep him for 2020 for a cap hit of $11.7 million or cut him for dead cap of $3.7 million.
Look at guys around him also. Olsons contract is 7.5 mil average, but that's from 2015, a 3yr old contract, Witton, is from last year, but Witten is on the downslide of his career, and not getting paid for what he did in his prime, Gronks 9mil a year avg but that contract is from 2014.
Burtons contract basically pays him similar to Ertz(Philly TE) and Kelce(KC TE), but they were signed 2 years ago. How do you think the Bears expect to use Burton, and how do you think they expect him to preform? My guess similar to Ertz and Kelce as they are both from the KC/Ried tree.
Really the only part of the contract that should be brought into the conversation is the guaranteed money, which is out of whack, but but his cap is only bad the first 2 years and can easily be moved on from if he's not doing anything; same could have been said for Sims this year if the team didn't like what he did last year, or didn't project him to be good this year.

nice try
I consider it a solid double. Fact is that Glennon's cap hit allowed him to be cut, and Sims is almost exactly the same hit. If they didn't want him he would be gone, his contract doesn't make it hard to get rid of him anymore then Glennon's was. The only reason to keep him then is that they like what he did more then the fans did; again see Leno/Massie.

I think you are missing the point. No one is arguing they didn't want him. It's pretty obvious that if they didn't want him that they knew the solution -- just simply cut him. That they want him is a tangent. The point is not whether they want him. They point is whether or not he has been productive. Just because they want him, does not change what he has done. Same with Glennon. Just because they wanted him, did not make him productive. And just because the Bears decide something does not mean it is the right thing and we have to try to justify it with the baseline that it was the correct thing to do.

Leno was productive before people realized it, same with Maddie. Just bc you or I don't see it doesnt mean the coaches don't.

That is true. But I can only comment on what I see. I also see the stats. They are objective. They don't put him in a pretty light either.

Stats are rarely objective. Stats are used all the time by 2 different viewpoints on the same subject. Stats are only objective when you take them all into account and build a complete picture. One thing I still agree w/Cutler on is that you never know the whole story of an O, and who did what right and who did what wrong if you aren't on the team or in the filmroom.
He didn't look great, I don't disagree but that doesn't mean that he shouldn't be on the team; that's a decision for the coaches and the GM, not the fans. And since his contract isn't a qualifier for staying on the team then there has to be something the coaches like about him.

Um.... ok. Stats are almost always objective. Their interpretation may not be.
Yes, the coaches feel he should be on the team. And all of us that have eyes don't wee why.
