The Chicago Bears suffered a slew of injuries in their Monday Night loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Some of them were pretty bad. That almost guaranteed GM Ryan Pace would be forced to make moves on the roster in order to shore up areas that were hit. Perhaps the biggest one was at quarterback.
Head coach John Fox insisted that Jay Cutler, who suffered a thumb injury, would not require surgery and hadn’t been ruled out for the Dallas game. However, multiple sources seemed to indicate that the 33-year old veteran would not be back for awhile. Some even went so far as to say the injury could knock him out for the season.
Based on the latest move, it’s becoming obvious the Bears aren’t holding out too much hope.
It’s easy to get lost in the end of that final line: “move forward without Jay Cutler.” Most likely it was meant to convey the team knows they won’t have him for a considerable amount of time as he tries to rehab that thumb. That in itself is another counter to Fox’s message about the injury not being too severe.
At the same time one must wonder if Cutler is done for the year and perhaps done with the Chicago Bears. There is a prevailing belief that surgery is still very much in the picture for him, which would keep him out months. Based on how the team is playing, it’s likely the team wouldn’t bother trying to bring him back if they even could late in the year.
Cutler will be 34-years old next season and have suffered the second significant injury to the thumb on his throwing hand. Remember he broke that same finger back in 2011. This marks the seventh-straight year he’ll have failed to complete a 16-game season without missing a start. While not everything was his fault along the way, the fact of the matter is it’s becoming hard to see him returning.
This season or ever.
As for Matt Barkley. He seems to have a strong connection to Dowell Loggains, who liked him coming out of USC. Depending on how the season goes (and whether Loggains keeps his job) don’t be surprised if the young quarterback gets an opportunity to play after being promoted from the practice squad.
