Wonder what Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, Sammy Watkins, Allen Robinson and other elite WRs now thinking.... Buccaneers’ WR Mike Evans agreed to a 5-year, $82.5 million extension that includes $55 million guaranteed.

Here’s how they look to me: they still look like 2nd tier guys
No question Evans’ blockbuster deal pushed up prices. It will push up prices for the 2nd tier too, just not as noticeably. Look....I get the risk. I understand the temptation to “play it safe”. I understand there’s a feeling of security in the notion of signing multiple WRs for the price of just one.
We have done that already. Last year we went into camp with a whole harem of such “bargain pickups”. We had Rueben Randle, Markus Wheaton, Kendall White, and Victor Cruz in addition to Meredith and White. Turns out that numbers aren’t a substitute for having at least some top-notch playmaking talent.
We did that already. We did a similiar thing for years on end during the Angelo/Lovie era after acquiring a young pro-Bowl QB who apparently didn’t need any weapons. The next few seasons are going make clear whether the Trubisky pick was the long term answer or not. Let’s give the kid a fighting chance. He had total garbage to throw to last season.
Couldn't agree more MPB. I want or hope at least for Pace to sign a minimum of:
1. Wilson 2. Robinson 3. Burton
If he does that then I will feel much more comfortable about the draft.

Team last year tried to get Jeffery back and offered more money, he didn't bite. The team has in the past brought in Mushin, and Roy Williams, and Brandon Marshal(via trade). They've tried a mix of way to find WR's through the years. At 80 mil I'm not feeling great on Robinson Lee or Richardson though. Wilson won't cost that much. Better off getting a high valued WR in the draft.

2nd tier guys look the same. Their price also goes up.
How many 2nd tier guys have we brought over since Pace started as GM and how many are still on the team?
We got a ton of cap space and no real big contracts to worry about yet ( Floyd and Trubisky for example )

I'm with you completely. That FA above would have the following benefits:
1) You don't need to re-sign Wright (money saved) 2) You almost certainly would cut Wheaton (money added back to cap, there's your $5m in-season "emergency fund" right there) 3) You could probably cut Sims (ditto ^^^) 4) You now have a legit big target #1 WR security blanket for MT to throw to. A guy that makes back shoulder, jump ball contested plays 5) You don't need to draft a WR or TE before round 4 minimum, can use higher draft picks on D and/or OL
Yes, it will be costly but that FA solves most/all of the receiving corps problems.

Maybe, but not like Evans deal will boost the possibilities for Robinson, Watkins, and others who are due for extensions.
Monsters I'm gonna come right out and say most if not all of the guys Pace brought in last year with the possible exception of the trade for Inman, weren't even 2nd tier. They were basically cast offs either due to injury or they were a couple of years beyond their peak production. They were not much above warm bodies but then again so was Fox as an offensive HC and Loggains wasn't much better.
I will not compare that group with the overall WR talent available this year including the 2nd tier guys. These guys are younger and on the rise. Take some time and research them instead of just putting them down.
LOL, I'm as guilty as anyone regarding the over-valuing of our own WRs. Mr 6-catch Tanner Gentry had me all excited at one point. Move over Jerry Rice. The Bears have a young TG :-)
Still better then Daniel Braverman...remember that guy!
Oh God. I’m pretty sure a few on here went and ordered authentic Braverman jerseys

In the post-SB Lovie/Angelo era, the receiving corps was a total shit show for years and littered with crap. We had Kellen davis, Hester, Roy Williams, Earl bennett, Aromashadu, etc. There was no serious attempt to bring in a real receiver until JA was fired. Emery, for as much as he sucked at defense and coaching, actually spent some money successfully on O. He brought in "expensive" players like Marshall, Marty B, and Bushrod and suddenly the O went from a joke to a real threat.
As hard as it may be to believe, but the WR corps went right back to a joke last year. I mentioned the "cheap" garbage Pace brought into camp last year and we all saw the results.
Getting a "high valued WR in the draft" is possible but it will cost a 1st or 2nd to do it in all likelihood and using the pick that way, even if the guy pans out which is far from certain (see Kevin White), means you cant use it to fill needs at EDGE or OT--two "expensive positions" that are often very hard to fill in FA. There's an opportunity cost that needs to be considered.
