I find this line to be absolutely ridiculous. A receiver that commands double teams and for a defense to adjust its scheme on a constant basis doesn't affect the game on an every play basis? A DB who can shadow and shut down a teams #1 receiver freeing up resources for the defense to attack other areas doesn't affect the game on an every play basis? Thats just silly.
Youre the GM of team X
Genie pops out of the lantern and grants you the option of one free pro-Bowl level player at a position of your choosing
Your job is on the line and you need to make the playoffs next season to keep it.
what position are you gonna choose?
if you say WR, S, TE, or CB then I know you are a year away from being fired. A “WR commanding double teams“ wins championships? LMAO
You can’t be serious.
For starters, thats a ridiculous scenario that is no where close to the reality of the draft. Further, no one position wins championships...and that wasn't your argument. Good TEAMS win championships.
If you'd like to move the goal posts back and address your original stance, that "tackles, QB's and pass rushers affect the game more than DB's and WR's do", I think you'll find my reply accurate. WR's can affect the game on an every snap basis...same for a DB. Jimmy Smith, Champ Bailey, Josh Norman, Jalen Ramsey, Patrick Peterson, AJ Bouye, Casey Heyward, Aquib Talib, Janoris Jenkins....on and on...they affect the game...every snap. Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones, Antonio Brown, Odell Beckham, Mike Evans....and on and on....affect the game every snap they're on the field. If I can tell a DB to go line up on a teams #1 receiver and follow them every where they go...that free's up a whole host of resources I can utilize to attack and shut down the offense in other ways. It allows the DC to be unbelievably creative with their schemes and blitzes and eliminates an option for the offense. It helps the other DB's because now more secondary help can be deployed elsewhere, it helps the pass rush because they have more time to get home, it helps the linebackers in coverage, it allows a safety to stay closer to the line of scrimmage to possibly help against the run...I can go on for days here. Similarly, if I have a receiver that can command double teams, and special coverages from the defense in order to handle them, I've taken away valuable resources that defense can attack me with. That now opens up a host of other options for my offense and helps everyone from the QB to the running back to the linemen.
So...if one of those players is thought to be available...and I have an opportunity to take them...I will.
