WOW. I did not see that coming. Robbie looked shaky in the pre-season but I assumed his problems were correctable - apparently Pace and Fox felt otherwise. I'm interested to see Pace's plan here. We're one week away from Houston and we're without a kicker. Very interesting.
I have to say that I'm not a fan of this move at this stage of the game. If Pace had the foresight to bring someone in earlier to compete with Gould that would be one thing but now we're one week away from the Texans and we don't have a FG kicker and those who are on the market are going to be a wash or worse.
If the 3m in cap room they save was the deciding factor due to their desire to bring in Sitton AND another player (Josh Scobee maybe) then ok, but I'd like to see Pace be a little more proactive in some of these decisions. Make sure a plan is clearly in place before doing something drastic.
Interesting note: Adam Jahns @adamjahns 2m2 minutes ago Adam Jahns Retweeted Adam Schefter Truly an end of an era. Gould was last remaining player from Lovie’s Super Bowl team.
I liked Gould and I'm sad to see him go especially at this late stage. Pretty shitty move by Pace if you ask me. If you wanted to cut the vet leading scorer for the Bears do it when he has lots of options open to him. If the dude signs elsewhere he's going to have to make some quick tough decisions with his family about moving and all that other shit. Pretty much a bullshit move IMHO.
Anyway, thanks Robbie. You were one hell of a Bear for one helluva long time. Gonna miss you.
Timing is bad, maybe shanking PATs in the preseason. Maybe guy wasn't putting the work in to improve. IDK he was not looking very good. I am not upset though, Gould earned it. They should have had competition in camp at kicker.

I posted it after the last pre season game. Stick a fork in him. He's done. Sad to see it, but we can't go into the season with a kicker who will cost us games.

Shitty move at this late stage in the game. Maybe he had advanced warning about it - I doubt it. This isn't just a tough move for the player who's only known one team his whole life, it's a tough move for his family relying on the pay AND now having to figure out this year on the fly.
Also, to your last point. Don't assume that the kext kicker we get is not going to cost us games. I imagine kickers who don't cost games are already signed for the year.
Now we're going to get a second rate kicker whose skills are probably worse than Goulds AND who doesn't' have any chemistry with the long snapper and holder or the Bear's system and we're going to give him less than 1 week to get ready for the Texans... That's a fail IMHO by Pace. Get a plan in place before you act. Be prepared. If you have reservations about a guy get his replacement before you release him and make sure he's an improvement.
It's a disrespectful move to a lifelong Bear - the leading all time Bear scorer - AND it's a terrible way to welcome someone new into the fold. They definitely are not setting him up to succeed.
Pace must be desperate for money to sign some players. If not, he just fucked up big time.

they have someone they like already in sight. i wonder who that is? the last preseason game Gould's stats were better than he played, which i'd rank as quite an achievement. but this guy was solid for the bears in what has to be one of the top 3 toughest places to kick.

Not surprised just more surprised not having a competing kicker during the preseason. I hope this is also has to do with Sitton deal getting that done as we write. Always was fan of Gould he just doesn't have it anymore last year and was continuing into this preseason.

I agree with JABF. I wanted Gould replaced in the offseason or at least competed against. Stupidly, they didn't do that and Gould's terrible PS performance proved them wrong. It's a little late now.
