Honestly...no.
Maybe Pace will surprise me and have one of these QBs with a high enough grade that he will be impossible for Pace to pass on at 3.
However...the Glennon deal screams "developmental QB" in this draft and Pace seems to love his value picks.
My gut tells me Nate Peterman in the third round...as they got a great look at him in the Senior Bowl.
(Although I think Watson would make this team far more fun to watch)
For instance. We finally end up with a pick low enough to draft a potential star QB but it happens in a year when none of the QB prospects rate that high a pick. So Pace is smart enough to pass and use the first two rounds to draft key players who can start elsewhere. Then in round 3 or 4 the value is right and we draft a QB but who we get is far more at the level of a Grossman or an Orton than a Bridgewater or a Mariota and that puts us right back where we were before trading for Cutler. Still in need.
Glennon appears to have a reasonable skill set but his lack of mobility in this offense concerns me. Do we stick primarily with a WCO where he's getting the ball out fast and early and end up with a taller version of Brian Hoyer but one running that same dink and dunk offense? Since that's what Fox seemed to favor last fall I'd say that's quite possible. If you look at Glennon's stats his yds per attempt are significantly less than Cutlers or Aaron Rodgers which means to me he avoids pick by throwing many of the same "safe" passes Hoyer did and I did see a lot of that in his highlight videos.
If that's the case then why the smaller speed receivers like Wright and Wheaton? Will we even attempt a downfield passing game under Fox and Loggains?
I'm not against Glennon but to be honest I am trying to connect the dots and I don't see a big tall passer with limited mobility as being ideal for the Bears. I don't see a Ben Rothlisberger type guy here and I worry about him being far more like a Jonathan Quinn. Far too many fans fail to remember what the Bears QB situation was like prior to Cutler when you'd have to call Rex the best of that lot. Are we headed that way again?
Those are good points, especially your point about us getting that #3 draft pick in a year where the QB class isn't that great (LOL, isn't that the luck of the Bears?).
Glennon intrigues me. He is going to have a solid OL to work behind and a very good run-game (certainly a huge benefit for any QB). My hope is that the offense becomes more diverse and mixes in just enough of a vertical game that defenses have to respect that we can be effective taking shots downfield to speed WRs. Let Glennon do most of his passes in the intermediate to short range though. Protect the football without getting crazy conservative. That is do-able. We need to see the play calling mixing in a solid run game with a diverse passing attack... a nice mix of getting the ball out quick on some downs, yet firing some deep stuff to put some healthy fear in to defenses too.
Glennon doesn't have great mobility, but some of the best QBs of our era are not that mobile either. Tom Brady certainly isn't. I'm not comparing Glennon with him at all, but just pointing out that he doesn't have to be that mobile to succeed here.
I'm 100% in agreement that the Bears history at QB has been bad. Real bad. But that doesn't have to define our future at the position. Glennon may or may not be a good QB for us. But I have the feeling Pace has the gears to get us where we need to be at QB. It stinks that this year's QB class wasn't better. I think there could be a QB in this draft worthy of developing into a franchise QB. We just have to hope Pace can spot that guy and draft him. I like Watson, Kizer, Peterman & Webb (in that order). Although it's a toss up between Watson and Kizer for me. I'm not too excited about Trubisky and the rest. I could see a QB drop to us in that second round (maybe even third round) that would be BPA for us at that point - and Pace drafting them. We've all seen some very solid QBs drafted outside of the first round, so maybe Pace has one spotted for us in this draft. Only time will tell.
I'm cautiously optimistic about the Bears at this point. I want to see the rest of FA, and of course the draft. But already we can see a lot of young players on this team with upside - versus the roster of aging players (one of the oldest in the NFL) just a few years ago. It's the 3rd year of the Pace rebuild. I expect to see a decent team this season. If not, then I'll be grabbing the torch and pitchfork. But for now I feel pretty good about the Chicago Bears.
